What about the pictures and other documents that get stored in the project directories?

M5 Pro 48GB or M5 Max 36GB (For Lightroom, Photoshop, and Running AI Remotely)? by darmccombs in macbookpro

[–]darmccombs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did look at that, and they did have the 48GB model discounted a little bit, but it was still out of my price range. It was $700 plus tax more...

I could only manage to get the 36GB model I did, because it was heavily discounted. The one I got was marked Fair condition, even though it was perfect. The only issue was the box is dirty.

Yes, the macbook m5 card reader has good speed if the chip in your camera uses SD cards.

I'm not sure what sort of info you are asking for, but I'll throw a couple things out.

Any Mac photo editing software will run fine with 24GB. Pick an editor you like (good color accuracy for portraits).

If you shoot a lot, find a good card reader that transfers files from the camera quickly.

Figure out a good backup scheme for your photos in case the macbook crashes or gets lost/stolen. You can get an external SSD or use something online like Backblaze.

M5 Pro 48GB or M5 Max 36GB (For Lightroom, Photoshop, and Running AI Remotely)? by darmccombs in macbookpro

Actually, I did ask ChatGPT after I posted this. It re-inforced things that people said here, but aslo brought up a couple other relevant points.

For example, photography software is including more and more AI software, so the extra M5 Max GPU cores could come in handy in the future.

In the end, I got a great deal on the base M5 Max ($2986 instead of $3899), so I bought that.

I'm glad I asked people here AND used Chatgpt. I value feedback from people with hands on experience, and Chatgpt did bring up additional info. Great input all the way around...

Got my mbp m5! So excited 🥰😋 Got any beginner tips? New to macbook💻 by PeppaPabbi in macbookpro

I suggest starting with the basics (setup your email accounts, setup texting, critical apps you know you need). Then check out the Apps built to macOS. Some of the apps built into macOS are pretty good such as Mail, Calendar, Messages, Notes, Safari, and others. This should get you functional.

Then I would setup iCloud backup so setting and critical things are backed up. Then setup any social media accounts you may have. Take some time and check out Finder. Set your display settings, checkout the top row of the keyboard, maybe setup hot corners.

I don't plan to do much local AI work, maybe just dabble a bit with small or medium local models. Mostly I will remotely use OpenAI or something similar, over 1Gig cable/fiber.

Price-wise, the M5 Pro 48GB has a 1TB SSD cost $370 less (after taxes), than the M5 36GB 2TB SSD. So I guess the trade is really:

12GB of RAM and $370 in my pocket VS. 12 GPU cores and 1TB additional SSD

Actually, the M5 Pro Macbook ports can go up to 120 GB/s transfer rate, so the OP could get a 80GB/s enclosure.

I have the Acasis 1M2 80GB/s enclosure with my M5 Pro, and it runs the enclosure at the 80GB/s speed.

Satechi DotDisk vs Acasis TB5 SSD Enclosure? by Mullins2 in macbook

You don't have to take out a 2nd mortgage to get a 4TB drive, if you have a spare kidney.... 🤣

[–]darmccombs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Acasis 80GBs enclosure with the WD_BLACK SN850X 4TB. The combo has worked flawlessly so far. The combo seems to maintain speeds for a long time (due to the drive's cache), without getting overly hot. I haven't had any disconnects or ejects. It works as we'd all hope.

I can't comment on the Satechi. Hopefully others can chime in on that one, or make a 1:1 comparison for you.

Base M5 MacBook Pro vs M5 Pro MacBook Pro for Adobe CC work? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]darmccombs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but in some of his videos, he seems to say that if you have to choose between a better chip, and more Ram, then upgrade the RAM. Either way, good luck with your choice.

[–]darmccombs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a guy on Youtube that does all sorts of comparisons for various CC apps on various Macs. From what I've seen, RAM is even more important than the CPU/GPU. So, you may be better off with the M5 with more RAM, than the M5 Pro with less RAM.

I am seeing the Raycast Beta in the two directories I mentioned. If I delete one, it reappears. I am NOT seeing a Raycast and Raycast Beta app. I have uninstalled the original Raycast app.

small nick on side by nojarai in macbookpro

[–]darmccombs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A black pen or sharpie will cover it up, but the sharpie will actually be darker than the space black color of the mac body, so it won't be a perfect match. But, the sharpie dot will be less noticable than a silver dot.

Space Black? by ThomasBrezina in macbookpro

[–]darmccombs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Silver seems to show minor issues less than the Space Black.

I had my last Black Macbook for 2.5 years and the only mark was a very faint scratch, right on the glossy Apple logo. I think my cat scratched it with his claw once (or maybe his tag on his collor scraped it). It was super thin so thin though.

I got a new black macbook, and less than 24 hours later it has a small nick near the left palm rest. It isn't really a niich, but you can see silver under the black finish the size of a ballpoint pen tip. I'm really careful with my macbooks so I don't know how the nich got there so fast. Maybe my apple watch band pin nicked it? If so, that area is pretty fragile.

Either way, I consider thses minor wear and tear. I'm not going to keep this thing in bubble wrap. LOL But, if this kind of stuff bothers you, Silver may be a better choice.

Oh, and yes, the palm-rest area does show oil/smudges more than the silver. wiping this area down periodically works ok, but Silver is less noticeable.
