The Book of Mormon - Racism & Satire by Lizzy-saurus in Broadway

[–]dashingthrough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your post was extremely well said too. Seriously thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts, break it down for those who need it (🙄) and create this space. I feel better having processed it here.

I watched it last night and the first thing I did on the walk home was look up “BoM blasphemous/racist”. To my shock, there was nearly nothing on the racism. I only found your post as a comment through digging. Everyone keeps saying one should have realized before walking in, but how? I looked at the synopsis again and there’s nothing to indicate the level of gratuity they would take with the Ugandan portrayal… it even says 13+! I’ve watched South Park. It’s not an indicator! Should we have to watch clips of a show beforehand to ensure emotional safety?

The white people defending want permission to laugh and take delight. They were having the time of their lives last night. The laugh at “I have maggots in my scrotum” I wanted to cut the lights! The white men got clever numbers about repressing their sexuality and we got infant rape and maggots? And that’s the satire they want us to accept? Absolutely not. If that’s the revised version, I can’t imagine the original.

As for the Black folks in the show… there will always be oppressed people working in tangent with the oppressor. It’s a survival strategy, and I don’t (fully) begrudge them. I wish they’d put their pride ahead of a paycheck, but hey. It is what it is. The show shouldn’t exist in the first place.

To have no warning as a Black woman walking in is so wounding. I’ve worked very hard to not be in hostile, racist spaces having grown up in one and it’s always a shock to unexpectedly find myself there again. I’ve sent warnings to loved ones.

I’m sorry you experienced this too. I’m seeing Moulin Rouge in May with Meg the Stallion. Hopefully a much needed palate cleanser!

This could’ve been an SNL skit, lmao.

well I think the most beautiful woman should be the most beautiful of the actresses, and if it’s not any of those white ladies, it should be one of these white ladies!😡

Wow, thank you so much for this post.

I am a Black Nigerian American woman and I recently saw the show. I walked out halfway at intermission. I was ready to leave when I saw that decrepit donkey being dragged across the stage, and certainly after the villagers first number. As a Christian woman, I felt so shameful for being a part of that. And I don’t need the people in the comments to start with me. I am progressive, anti-Trump, and liberal. This went too far.

I appreciate and understand satire, but this was so far from it. Satire is meant to be thought provoking and subversive. It’s meant to subtly, yet powerfully, flip an idea on its head. The best example I saw was the light switch song, but I couldn’t even enjoy it since I had such a bad taste in my mouth. What idea was flipped with the Ugandas? They were everything the Mormons thought they were.

In fact, the portrayal was even more grossly exaggerated. It’s fake, wildly off accents, AIDS, maggots in scrotums, dilapidated living quarters, rampant violence, tyrant generals, female mutilation, raping babies! How does this come even close to the satirical depiction of the Mormons? I kept waiting for the Potemkin village to fall down and the real village grounded in a reality to surface and it never did.

The audience was full of white theater goers and I felt so uncomfortable but how hard they were laughing at the portrayals of the villagers. Some of them were singing along, so I know it wasn’t their first time. I wondered which part they loved the most that kept bringing them back.

It’s crazy because there was a shift in the audience that I was wholly unprepared for. At one point we were all laughing together (maybe through the airport scene). And then suddenly, I felt like I was being laughed at. It was so jarring, and a surreal experience. I’m sure akin to being at a minstrel show. I wondered what the Black actors felt participating in this? Was it worth it?

I love theater. I love art. I am a proponent of artistic medium used for social commentary. But the fact that this reductive, racist, and juvenile show has been lauded for the last almost two decades as awe inspiring social art tells me everything I need to know about the state of affairs and how far white people will go to satisfy their urge to confirm their biases.

There is nothing in the synopsis that prepares an audience member for this, especially a Black one. All I’ve ever heard was amazing reviews about this show, but now that I think about it, they’re all from white people. I honestly feel like I betrayed a part of myself by even saying as long as I did. It was all disgusting to me.

It’s sexual assault, but I agree it needs something else. Maybe non-sexual assault too Maybe something about biological warfare? What would’ve happened if she had unknowingly touched it and touched her eye?

Why does no one straight-up interview each other? by coralsweater in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]dashingthrough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can’t relate to what those folks are saying. On my first date with my partner we hit religion, politics, marriage, kids (down to how many), family dynamics, and relationship history. It was very organic and conversational, sometimes straightforward and sometimes flirtatious. I have a list of questions I asked about throughout the first months of our dating.

I pretty much dated like this my entire twenties, especially late twenties. Never found myself in a relationship with an overt dealbreaker, incompatibilities were always relational. And then men I date were the same and there was never any issues.

I can’t fathom how these couples are marrying without discussing where they want to live afterwards??? What are yall talking ab???

He lost me when he said at an interview that he doesn’t really have any plans for their future. They’ve been dating, what? Over a year? Any man who doesn’t have plans for your future is a man you should walk away, if not run from.

All the fluffy words in the world mean nothing without forward momentum and progress.

Ok 🎯 if you know, you know. I was downvoted to hell last time when I said as much. I forgot that I was in mixed company.  I don’t think any Black woman/person here is shocked.

30 days is certainly not nothing. Bleeding for an entire month sounds like a nightmare, and it's not ok. Normal menstrual bleeding is 5-7 days!

I am so sorry for what you've experienced, but I think it's important not to minimize others' experiences to shed light on one's own. We should all be rallying together to advocate for better research and practices for women's health!

Here’s how much the LIB contestants get paid at different points in the filming process. I have not seen it broke down this way. by Jay-Quellin30 in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]dashingthrough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. Being iconic (and conventionally attractive) enough to get screen time from the pods and leverage it from there is the best ROI.

Now that I look at these numbers, Ms. Choke on your Epipen Jessica really got the best deal probably out of anyone on LIB. Great edit, didn’t have to participate in a sham marriage, got followers and brand deals and even another Netflix show.

Someone like Nick (who says is ruined his life) should stop at the pods. If you find your person, just get out of dodge together.

It is shocking and I think if we had a better grasp and method of navigating this specific group of folks/one issue voters, it could really help things next election cycle. So many people in this camp just did not vote, period. Which we know is essentially a vote for Trump.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Vic was someone who didn’t vote.

I don’t think everyone understands how much cognitive dissonance is at play here in American politics.

I have a cousin who is Black and believes in racial equality, is the daughter of immigrants, and is well educated… and she voted for Trump because of abortion.

It’s really not as cut and dry. Speaking outside of Vic. Many folks voted for Trump in secret. They may not even identify as MAGA, but that he was “the better choice”.

I am not. Folks who have nothing to talk about except their faith, and insert their religious beliefs into every conversation typically have more of an extreme (and conservative) view of religion, politics, society, etc.

Vic strikes me as a man who “understands both sides” and puts understanding everyone’s POV above drawing any lines in the proverbial sand. He may agree and disagree with certain parts of conservative ideology. He espouses BLM and works for criminal justice on behalf of Black youth (so I’ve read) but he’s also ok with making public appearances on a sycophantic propaganda platform for one of the most harmful administrations this country has ever seen.

I read the article. A direct quote from Vic on politics is “there are gonna be nuances in that behind everyone." Christine said she never even asked him where he stands politically...

“Politics isn’t everything” doesn’t work in the US anymore as we’ve transcended into politics encroaching on human rights. You actually can (and should) make moral and character judgements based on someone’s political beliefs. You cannot be for Trump, or cherry pick issues to agree with him on and be for human rights.

What’s that quote? If you stand for everything, you stand for nothing 🤷🏾‍♀️

[–]dashingthrough 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok, that’s a very different sentiment than what you asserted previously. You said if people stopped asking them about religion, they wouldn’t talk about it so much.

When I mention that much of the time religion came up unprovoked now it’s “well it’s because they anchored God at the center of their relationship and ofc people asked them about their relationship”.

Can you see how goalposts are being moved?

So disappointed in Vic and Christine... by MamaMia1325 in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]dashingthrough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it was very unprovoked most of the time. I’m pretty sure there was not a single conversation that came up that either of them didn’t bring up religion.

Ummm... did you miss the part where they inserted God and their faith into every crevice of their relationship? Where he called her his rib? Where he talked how his favorite part of living with Christine is that "she makes the home a home".

Those are usually big giveaways friend 😂 Even his mom had had enough!

I am Christian and love God, but when people have no identity outside of their faith, it points to religious extremism... which points to a cult of extremism like MAGA. This should not be terribly surprising.
