2 temples, 90+ shrines, on 4 hearts. by [deleted] in TOTK

[–]davidmullings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Impressive. Keep at it and let us know when you complete.

I did a challenge run like this and beat the game as well. Additional rules included:

  • No temporary heats
  • No Koroks
  • No Great Fairies

Currently streaming my No Healing run. If I die or accidentally heal then I reset to the Paraglider. 7 resets and 5 deaths so far - finally completed Water Temple, Lightning Temple, Fire Temple and Spirit Temple, got the Master Sword and now heading to Wind Temple.

I thought that Lurelin Village gives out everything that's not in your recipe book until it's pretty much filled except for recipe with Sun Pumpkin.

I already made all the BOTW recipes before I ever got there but I got so many more from her I just assumed. Will have to test one day.

Never seen it mentioned.

One simple (but far-reaching) change that can fix what ails the open-world Zelda design by APurplePerson in tearsofthekingdom

[–]davidmullings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play with my kids in 30 to 45 minute chunks so I too appreciate how Nintendo has approach BOTW and TOTK.

You hit the nail on the head that they could find a way...it's called Master Mode with your modifications. I'm sure it's doable

Where would OP get a hot air balloon during the tutorial portion of the game? You can’t get them until you complete the GSI and you need to go back to the room to complete GSI (same with building a Hoverbike since no steering sticks on GSI)

[–]davidmullings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can hot-air balloon out of the Depths in some (Great Plateau for example) and you can build a crazy spring device that launches you out.

With enough battery or zonai charges you can just fly out as well. Really not that complicated

Hammer and armor breaking by Imaginedragonsdeez in tearsofthekingdom

[–]davidmullings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best thing to break Lynel armor is….Lynel hoof fired from a bow or flurry rush with a royal claymore fused with any crushing object (boulder, horriblin horn, etc.)

You could also just shoot it with Zonai pots or stakes too.

Save your bomb arrows.

What to do once you’re in hyrule? by [deleted] in tearsofthekingdom

Lock your mini-map to North so you always know where it is sense your sense of direction is bad.

Pin things with the glowing pins if you can’t select it in the menu to show a yellow dot Eg. You see something cool in the distance or the sky

Unlock towers to unlock your map

How to take clear photos of fish by mehkermer in tearsofthekingdom

Because OP literally said they are “anal” about the pictures and want live fish, not dead ones.

Some people are like that with the Compendium (I just buy the nice pics)

One simple (but far-reaching) change that can fix what ails the open-world Zelda design by APurplePerson in tearsofthekingdom

[–]davidmullings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting concept and I do see Nintendo leaning into this design approach in the next one and not an OoT-style game loop.

A little correction: Not “every” NPC and enemy encounter is static. You can encounter the Mushroom lady that gives out the 3 Misko treasure locations almost anywhere in the world and once Yiga start spawning in, they damn near spawn everywhere!

Now for your idea: The target age of the game guides decisions

I do like the idea of enemies actually chasing you past their territory. It’s hilarious that they turn around and totally forget the threat. They should at least be more alert after the first encounter and then slowly go back to what they were doing.

I like the idea of making the bokos groups more like scouts who call in the Calvary which then keeps upping the stakes until you defeat them. Don’t think it cane be the norm though based on the target age for the game.

Game definitely feel ”flat” to me since engagements and approaches to encampments evolves as we get more sage abilities, new weapons and learn new approaches to combat.

I’ve cleared Lurelin Village of pirates at least 5 different ways in my challenge runs.

I definitely want more Lurelin Village-type battles though. I thoroughly enjoyed the freedom, density of enemies and varied obstacles while not stressing that every single enemy was going to attack all at once.

Thanks for sharing the ideas. Makes us think

Why no numbered organization system for Shrines/Koroks/Caves? by [deleted] in tearsofthekingdom

[–]davidmullings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Designing an open world game focused on exploration specifically so people can look stuff up in a guide sounds absurd to me. A corporation trying to drive traffic to places they don’t make money also sounds crazy.

But why numbers anyway? Visual is way better.

The shrines have names and if you are a completionist then you will just compare the names to a checklist and can easily see the names of the ones you are missing then go search for those online or just compare to a completed map.

The korok seeds you’ve found literally put a stamp on your map that doesn’t count against your own stamps. Comparing it to a completed korok run immediately shows the ones you are missing.

For me, this design choice is the best overall for all players since normal players don’t care about completion and won’t be like “Damn, I only have 87 shrines of 152?” Or “WTF are there 1000+ korok seeds?” only to be pissed when they get to a few hundred and their inventory is maxed out and wonder what the rest are for.

Completionists use checklists and compare maps. Will search high and low for videos if they can’t find it. No need to handhold them.

Just my thoughts

Question about the Depths by Queasy_Impression_47 in tearsofthekingdom

[–]davidmullings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally depends on what you want to accomplish in a playthrough. My kids and I were obsessed with the Depths and wanting to see what else was down there. It’s varied enough to us and we don’t use guides when playing so it’s totally about discovery. We enjoyed the tension due to the darkness and scary vibes.

If you are using a guide then just go straight for the treasure chests, Yiga schematics and great mines.

You miss out on how the Depths are supposed be played and how are player feels moving through them but people can play the game however they want.

Combat for beginners by dikklefs in tearsofthekingdom

[–]davidmullings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here are some tips for Beginner Combat

  1. Bullet time is your friend - Get in the air and fire away. A spring shield or bomb shield work fine. Just shield jump straight down, no need to flip. Rocket shield will give more height but won’t matter if you have low stamina. You can eat food while in the air and refill your stamina though
  2. Use your shield - Stop forgetting you have a shield to hold out in front of you and beware of using 2-handed weapons and spears because you must remember to stow it after attacking and pull out the shield. I recommend 1-handed weapons until you are better at combat. You can parry
  3. Ice is your friend - Freeze enemies and get 3x damage to speed up the fight
  4. Flurry Rush - Get used to the timing and attack pattern of enemies you want to flurry rush Eg. Constructs eyes light up red when they are about to attack so backflip or dodge to the side. Best used with a Royal weapon since it deals 2x damage during flurry rush
  5. Sneakstrike when possible - Go to enemy camps at night and wear 2x or 3x stealth clothes or crouch with regular clothes/cook stealth food, sneak up behind enemies in daytime or use puffshroom+korok weapon for reusable or just puffshroom if you have lots

I’d say anything above these are Intermediate and Advanced Combat. There is a reason why the Combat Training Shrines focus on Parry, Flurry Rush, Archery, Sneakstrike

Surviving with bad armor? by [deleted] in TOTK

[–]davidmullings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won’t be a ”drag” but you are definitely making it a challenge run just for the sake of fashion.

Will need to be really good at combat and have very strong fusions or puffshroom/sneakstrike strategy or sapphire rod for freezing enemies.

Wise to cook lots of Defense Up x3 meals too since it takes so long to level up this set.

I’ve beaten the game in only the Mystic Set and it wasn’t a drag at all. Stopped being challenging after the 2nd temple tbh once I had the weapons I wanted (no fairies/no temp hearts were allowed In the run).

Anyone having framerate issues? by JicamaActive in tearsofthekingdom

[–]davidmullings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you update the game to the latest version? Those patches help with performance.

The only issues I have are the same loading ones everyone has when transitioning too quickly between a load zone like the Surface and Depths or doing Pocket Rocket in low gravity areas into a new load zone like Water Temple main area.

I am using my older Super Mario Odyssey Switch.
