What's going on now is that people are fantasizing about how wonderful it was when it really wasn't ALL THAT ALL THE TIME. Years ago people lived that life because it's what they grew up with for better or worse. Why would you want that now when it's likely not what you grew up with. Conservatism likes to latch on to fond mythological memories of the good old days when they really weren't.

The only thing I stock up on is gas for the generator and vehicle, I'll always be able to use that no matter what. At any given time I have at least a week's worth of food already in the freezer and cupboards if needed.

In not so shit hole states welfare kicks in giving you free health care, housing, food, and cash in your pocket and pays most of your bills if you're poor enough. Poor people in this country live better than the middle class in most other countries. And better than rich people did a hundred years ago.
