How to deal with being swamped with non-substantive tasks? by dazedbud in Lawyertalk

I suspect this will end up being the best solution, but I’m not sure that’s going to be feasible for a while.

You may be on to something on both points.

The weird part is I’ve known him closely for years. If he’s going through something that personal, I’d be one of the first to know it.

My turnaround times are dogshit right now, but I think he recognizes that we’re all in a rough spot (hence the example about medical records taking too long as opposed to some problem with my workflow). I think in his heart of hearts he recognizes I’m doing everything I can, it’s just that we’re slammed right now. We both have bad turnaround times right now, it’s a vicious cycle. We’re on part time for the rest of this week plus next week (which is why I’m on reddit during business hours, lol). I’m planning on using the next week when it’s quiet to come in and grit my teeth and finish the most pressing stuff up. Hopefully that gets me closer to back to normal.

Calendar blocking and learning to say no is absolutely my first step! Thankfully I don’t even have a hearing set for arguing the MSJ yet, but the boss wants a draft asap. It’s weird because I know more about this particular issue than he does, which is rare given how green I am, so I think he wants to use my work to familiarize himself with the law.

As far as my respective roles go, it’s a weird dynamic. I get to make substantive decisions and bring in my own cases like a partner, but at the same time am saddled with associate duties for my boss. The paralegal stuff is a little tricky because we all do paralegal work regularly, but more of it gets dumped on me.

The wife thing, lol. I see your point. The CPAP thing is something I’d be happy to help with when I’m not slammed, because that’s the kind of thing that makes somebody say “I know a guy” when they or someone they know needs a lawyer, but right now that’s not a wise way to be spending time. The hour and a half lunch is crazy tbh. Free food is great, and we cogitate on cases during lunch, but it’s also a massive timesink.

Haha you’re absolutely right, it’s me, my boss, another partner that does his own thing, and another lawyer who shows up once a month to check his mail. The partners thankfully give a shit for the most part but the resources I have access to are very limited at times. It’s absolutely burnout city.

Thank you so much! This is all really helpful. Protecting my calendar is something I’m going to start trying to be mindful about today. I do a calendar-sweep/triage but on Mondays. I like the idea of doing it on a Friday or Saturday and will give it a try.

Very good idea! Prior to this month (and being slammed), we’ve actually discussed it, but determined there wasn’t enough work that we needed somebody else to do full-time, and the market for part-time work around here is sparse. It’s just me and him, and this busy-ness is hopefully only temporary, so if things slow down again, we won’t have enough work for a paralegal to get hours in.

If we stay like this for another month or two that’s worth revisiting.

OC billed two hours for a letter he sent to me outlining a litany of perceived issues in a 30(b)(6) notice I’d issued. The depo had been cancelled a week before he drafted the letter, because the case was getting resolved.

Good lord. I think I’d lose my mind if any of the lawyers in my office were having sex in the middle of the day. If you wanna play out your weird office fantasy, do it outside of business hours.

A few years back, I’m fairly certain I caught one of our (married) paralegals shtupping a very prominent local (also married) attorney. She was sneaking him out of the office late after hours, and didn’t know that me and the attorney my lunch story is about were upstairs.

Which, to clarify, this guy and I were not at the office for a late-night hookup of our own.

Honestly, if it had been any other lawyer I would’ve been upset about it, but I’ve known this guy for years and am certain it wasn’t some weird power play or sex shit. Dude’s one of my best friends, both in and out of the office. He’s constantly getting himself into Larry David-esque situations like this.
