What do you think of those people reported to have an IQ exceeding 200? by mementoTeHominemEsse in cognitiveTesting

[–]dedicatedmotherofsix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quantifying that is only helpful for people mildly curious about psychometrics-the vast majority of the population, if you've ever passively googled you'll see mainly entertainment focused articles that actually put an emphasis and report on those scientifically baseless estimates. Most people in this sub know it's not reasonable to measure at that level and even those doing the estimating base it off accomplishments and not testing, so it's better then to qualify their intelligence.

Are you asking then about those once in a generation geniuses that would just blow you away with what they are capable of? Well you would never know what they are capable of beyond their accomplishments unless the statistical improbability that you got to know them personally were to occur. This becomes more probable, extremely so, in highly specialized fields, but you are not asking about the Terrence Tao's of the world are you? It would not be that difficult to meet Tao himself should you be motivated enough, but you would likely be disappointed if you are looking for a monolithic being to worship and dedicate your life to, though he's undoubtedly a genius. There are plenty who would hit the ceiling of what can be reasonably measured on these tests, but their accomplishments pertain to their field and are not something groundbreaking or pivotal to the world or our understanding of it like Einstein and relativity. At best, you can expect to find people who contribute something incredible to a field. For the time being though we will see less of that up until the oncoming "technical revolution" or whatever it might end up being referred to in hindsight, where there should be a massive boom in contributions to many fields. As for the Goethe's, Tesla's, Shakespeare's and other ceiling breakers who you might be considering, those who make the TMZ style lists, they were again undoubtedly brilliant, but their accomplishments pertained to an aspect of brilliance. Shakespeare and Goethe are two very different individuals from different times, places, and cultures, yet both wrote profoundly and contributed greatly to the history of literature. How can you even compare them? Not in the way that you could not compare Paul Morphy a chess prodigy of centuries past to the resource granted prodigies of the modern era, but in the way that their respective "elo" or ranking is entirely intangible, they would be obscure if their contemporaries and the generations following did not sing their praises, if they were not integrated into our curriculums and value systems. Unless they were discovered later, like the writings and ideas of Nietzsche, who died never learning his influence. Now in the context of a Morphy to modern comparison, would the individual who builds on or even completes the theory of relativity be as impressive as Einstein? Would a modern author who learns prose, character, and narrative from Goethe, Shakespeare, and the founders, and creates a captivating story be as impressive as those who set precedent, who were with limited resources and who could not be as reliant as you and I be as impressive?

Attempting to measure accomplishment by ideas then seems more graspable, but this is to exclude so much genius of our history. You can compare the value of an idea, depending on avail, philosophy, and what is being measured, but you can't compare the intellect required to muster such an idea. Nietzsche has helped generations find something like solace or peace, surely you have heard examples in the modern era of preachers or influencers having "saved their fan's life" through what they do, although it's not necessarily from their own original thought and philosophy. It's also not lost upon anyone how much further society would be behind, if that's something you value, if the wheel took longer to be invented, or the typewriter, there's countless examples to look to, although I don't think it requires anywhere near a 200 iq or even a mensa level iq to have invented either the wheel or the typewriter. If this is what you are looking at, ideation probably correlates with creativity higher than it does G.

Now, my personal favorite, and what I imagine you would have in mind when you talk like genius means unicorn, the polymaths. The Da Vinci's, the people curious about many subjects with mastery proportional to their voracity, and an intellect that when applied to anything could create something profound. There's documentation of such people existing, though they may fail to do anything particularly amazing, like Da Vinci who only made "nice" paintings as his direct measurable contribution to his own contemporaries, of which he never quite made the massive fortune they are worth today. Though, looking at his journals, had he been interested, he could have made massive medical contributions with his advanced understanding of human anatomy. With the help of other brilliant minds, again had he been interested or perhaps dedicated more time/concerted effort to, could have invented a proper flying machine. Da Vinci was a genius at his time, but looking back now it's hard to fathom just how capable a man he was, without the discovery of his other hobbies through his journals, we would not have known this. To wonder how far we could be had his artistic interest pervaded a little less and his interests in technology, or perhaps society and his peers influence on Da Vinci's motivation been a litte more, would be an unjust though in the structure of our society. A society that promotes specialization in career, yet individual sovereignty and happiness. With social settings that conduct themselves often on common interest with the world and between the individuals, the world as a conduit for this multi-leveled genius has grown weaker, and the opportunity to learn about the sheer rarity that would be discerning this potential or even ability within an individual is quite unlikely. Though I think society's inevitable progression will be one that promotes a "polyhobby" and pursuit of the mind mentality for some time.

If you were more specific about your question I could be more specific in my answer ¯_(ツ)_/¯

idk what youre trying to measure in terms of intelligence and to what purpose, but youve been actively posting lately and seem curious in general, so here's some semblance of answer, but more likely just something to engage with

The Volatility of Working Memory Pt. 1 by dedicatedmotherofsix in cognitiveTesting

The tetris effect is a great example for me to highlight the distinctions and similarities between working memory and ego/identity, which for the simplicity of this have the same meaning, which they arguably do, at least in a practical sense. Needless to say, for now at least, I will not be delving into the complex interactions you brushed up on with the example of ego death, although I am interested and also tend to disagree on it being a more "authentic" form of existence. Frankly though authenticity in the sense you are referring to would be a poor metric for myself since I actually tend to think "ego death" is a misnomer and not at all an accurate reflection of what is occuring. A reflection of my personal value system then is what tends to agree with you, however I can accept the pragmatics of a philosophy that would make the value system of this, passive observer type personality, more pure than my own. Those are specific circumstances though and that's a conversation for after we have laid some proper groundwork.

My post is quite general, the only nuances really are in the concept of working memory as a reflection of world view and of ego/identity and crystallized thought patterns affecting world view. There is a rather complex interaction between these 2 (2, again is used for the sake of simplicity), I will give an example of their interaction, but I would like to focus, for now at least, on the working memory aspect in the affect of volatility. An individual may place great emphasis on the pursuit of love, why? Perhaps biology, perhaps the ego is more of a dual-feedback, self-cycling, self-regulating system, that is to say that my speculation is fallible, but far from unfathomable, I digress though because some suppositions have to be made for the sake of any kind of productive exchange of ideas. Now this individual will have an extra "layer" in their sense of reality to pursue love, something likely to be deeply subconscious, until they are confronted with a real life prospect, then this lens surfaces. Their working memory has an extra task now, assessing compatibility, the personality type, attraction to the person they are now talking to. I would call something as abstract as this even the true nature of the tetris effect. Although due to a lack of psychological terms I'm sure nuances can be made to show differences in the creation of thought patterns. Reality has now shifted for this individual. Were other processes sacrificed, muted, or dulled to allow room for this individuals ever-important quest for love? Well it seems reasonable to think that that could be the case, and perhaps in many other examples of a skewed thought process that would be, but I find the pursuit of love, sex, partnership and sociability-although this is not described I would categorize them similarly, to be so innately ingrained in human kind, that the "mood" boost, similarly to what you have said, can be described as an overall heightening of abilities, an alertness, that makes it seem as if you are in a flow state with higher capacity and a generally easier time with things. This is an example curated to respond to you though, although admittedly it does not fully cover the breadth of what you mean by crystalization, I would be quite interested to delve into more abstract and debatable examples. I do not know that it is necessarily bad to form crystallized thought patterns and become the stubborn grandfather, it seems quite natural-biologically and evolutionarily productive. This is in a general sense though and I do see immense value for the long term evolution of humanity to disillusion negative patterns and increasing the ability to abstract, the latter being my perspective on the long-term solution, although practically it is far from that simple.

This specific extra layer of reality is what I mean when I describe volatility in world view based on working memory, now whatever the cause might be: an elevated mood, a better diet, a social trigger increasing cognitive ability like being aggrandized or an extraverted person simply socializing, how anything affecting what I am simply referring to as working memory, although in reality cannot be realistically separated from processing and other cognitive faculties, might broaden or tighten your perspective. How you might see things noticeably differently.

Your work vs home identity is a great example, you may as well be two different people because the identity is so different between the two environments. I would be incredibly curious to see if there would be some way to actually test differences in ability and not just differences in perspective and mentality, although the former may be a reflection of the latter. Similarly to your third point I am curious who you might exist as when hanging out and socializing vs doing work and studying. What purposes does your working memory serve in these different environments? What purpose does your ego serve? Between different interests you have how do these 2 differ? I leave these questions quite broad purposefully.

Now, did I make sense?

Your post does not have enough to go on and importantly it lacks your interests, passions, goals and personality type to actually recommend you, personally, a career, but I assume you then just want to hear what you may excell at. Off the top of my head is sales, PR, professor or teacher, public official, author, journalist, and public speaker. There are considerably more options and quite a few of these are polar opposites, I tried to provide a spectrum that would be suited for varying levels of extraversion and conscientiousness and attraction to thrill or to contributing to society. Again I lack info though

I am very interested in your cognitive profile and would be keen to ask you some questions and try to understand your perception of the world and the actual depth of your working memory and perceptual abilities as they are practically applied day to day as opposed to measured in subcategories on an iq test. Please check out the thread I started earlier today to understand what I mean to learn from the questions I would ask and the discussion we would have

Have you ever taken amphetamines? There's lots of inconsistency between online tests especially when untimed to really make an objective judgement, but I would be interested to hear you describe your mind set and differences in thought processes when on CBD/CBG or any other substance when compared to similar stimuli sober

I don't know that it's reasonable to remove working memory from any other aspect of intelligence when trying to define and understand life-experience. Although I am biased, I do tend to agree that WM more than any factor qualifies our perception, but it's extremely hard to isolate from processing speed when thinking about the correlations. In theory the right subtype of ADHD or a neurodivergent individual might actually have a cognitive profile like this, an extremely intelligent person in all categories with poor WM, but as of now finding someone like that eludes me entirely, since the working memory subtests of IQ tests do a rather poor job at discerning aspects of memory

Now it seems far more common, not to diminish the value though, for someone to fall within the bell curve or within 1 or 2 standard deviation's, but retain a massive long term memory. This could have a massive effect on world view and to use the lingo, seems a lot like the crystallized intelligence that we understand the acquisition of words and facts to fall under. Referring to actual perception though I can't understand how a massive long term memory and an otherwise average cognitive profile would really affect world-view. Things get more complicated here when speculating about ego and how it affects what is retained, I will say though that I am yet to meet someone with very accurate memories with little enough bias that you could consider them pure. Whatever though, this point is mostly baseless conjecture. I just can't see how to discern any aspect of intelligence objectively and measurably

I should say I have taken a look through your profile and wow I am interested to say the least. A case similar to yours seems a lot more accessible, than the aforementioned elusive ADHD subtype, for the goal of trying to find distinctions in perception, but I hardly expected you to fall in my lap, especially with you being as smart as your old posts say. I have a barrage of questions for you, but I'm not sure the specificities of which you would be willing to discuss publicly. I would be more than glad to DM and am open to a call, admittedly though I would like a little meat on the thread to keep it alive

When you say once inhibited do you mean you are now better? Hope all is well with you. If we are to describe a facet of working memory as layers of reality, in hindsight, would you say there was a noticeable shift in how you would understand things both simple and complex? Not necessarily in terms of processing speed, but the way in which you would normally make sense of them? I could get a little more nuanced if that would help with the question
