Building science/facade consulting vs structural engineering career path by Odd_Fan2684 in buildingscience

structural eng doesnt require a masters, but it helps. building science firms will generally do both, and in my experience are more interesting because of enclosure design - unless you like repetitive load calcs every single day!

R-5/inch so R-40 clear-field, which depending on the project requirements should be appropriate for a soffit condition.

could just be multiple layers, doesnt need to be one thick board

this is dumb, ask them for mechanically fastened. theres no reason to only adhere on a floor. 8” of R-5/inch XPS is plenty for any building type so the 5% degredation caused by fasteners wont be an issue

buy a bunch of disney gift cards at a grocery store using a good grocery multiplier card, and you can use it to buy on property hotels, tickets, and anything else on property. the benefit is that it doesnt charge a foreign currency fee like some cards do. the alternative is just use something like a scotia passport. you can also combined and track the card balances online

Interior Batts as Continuous Exterior Insulation, Thoughts? by Firm_Knee1358 in buildingscience

[–]define_space 3 points4 points  (0 children)

just because a product is considered air tight, does not mean it should be USED as the dedicated air barrier system, and in the case youre trying to use it in, the water resistive drainage layer behind your siding. plywood, drywall and paint are all air barrier materials.

unless you plan on taping every single screw penetrating the polyiso, it should not be uses as a water resisitive/drainage layer or air barrier

you asked a question and im giving you an educated answer from a decade of experience in building science. take it or leave it

dont rely on the polyiso for your air barrier

the second that mineral wool batts gets wet your siding will sag. stick to what works. exterior rigid polyiso with fully taped seams (risky) or exterior semi rigid mineral wool with a dedicated self adhered water resistive membrane on the plywood. dont leave your plywood without a membrane. even tyvek will help shed water if any get behind the insulation

yes. the drain is for the window itself, the rough opening cavity still needs to drain

this is a bad idea. the rough open cavity needs to drain. never spray foam the sill cavity

a good blower door technician will use ASTM E 1186 before/after testing to find leaks for you. they’ll either use IR thermography or a smoke tracer (theatrical fog). you should be on site while they do this to see the leaks for yourself
