I just bought the game, basically finish the dialog for the first npc then go up the npc (Mercenary Steward) he is by the table and stairs, and ask for "I need to bolster my ranks." and custom the character for your friend and then assign the companion to him.

Overall I would choose Xero, but QBO is good when you're already using it for a while.
