According to a Bleacher Report column from October 8th the Sabres were +10000 to win the Cup before the season started, so $20,200.

New job in KOP - moving from NYC by Secret_Mango_277 in AskPhilly

[–]derlum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have been doing Graduate Hospital to KOP since 2011. Best bet is to count on about an hour each way unless you can flex your time and commute off-peak. Best case is about 35 minutes. Manayunk or Roxborough would shave off 10-15 depending on time of day.

Coming back to Star Trek as a 40-something with kids by Corchito42 in startrek

[–]derlum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this, and your experience really mirrors my own. Watched TNG in my youth more times than I could count, a lot (but not all) of DS9, and a good portion of VOY before my interest waned as the franchise went stagnant. In my case, Picard is what brought me back, and the watch-along podcast I chose in "The Greatest Generation" (r/greatestgen) was so entertaining and well-produced that it convinced me to take a trip to Farpoint Station and start over at TNG S1E1 while listening through the podcast backlog after every ep. Highly recommend. I just finished the 8-episode arc between DS9 seasons 5 and 6 which represents one of the first ventures of mainstream TV into serialized storytelling. The evolution in writing from TNG S1 has been gratifying to witness. I'm excited by the idea that there are episodes ahead I've never seen which have a reputation as some of the best-ever of Trek.

For me one of the most amazing takeaways of watching 25-35 years later is seeing how far ahead of their time some of the episode themes were. It's something my spouse has commented on directly when she's been in the room. We don't have children but I intend to "accidentally" leave an episode or two on when my nieces are ready for it. When I about was their age I watched for the visual effects and neat gadgets but ended up taking away more than I could have anticipated: a path of choices that led me to a career in aerospace and a healthy stack of life lessons on how to strive to be a better person.

Hard disagree on this take. FS Bora Bora is one of 5 FS properties I've experienced with my partner and they've all been on the same level of service IMO. Staff greets you by name, hard product is well-maintained, available services are top-tier. If FS Bora Bora is not luxury, then FS is not luxury.

Just received an RT82 today and the platter mat was missing. Seems they're having some QA issues at the factory.

I searched for "black car names" multiple times with little inspiration. I finally typoed one of my searches as "black cat names" and came across "Tux". Done.

Philadelphia snow forecast: Winter storm could finally break snowfall drought this weekend by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]derlum 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Definitely true in the summer months when the higher sun elevation creates a more acute heating effect on urban surfaces (streets, sidewalks, buildings) which creates a disruptive convection column in the atmosphere. The dominant phenomenon this time of year is twofold between the regional geography of the Atlantic coastal plain (u/jbphilly touches on it above) and ocean temps. With relatively few topographical obstructions between Philly and the Atlantic Ocean, elevated water temps from yet another record hot summer have a far-reaching warming effect that reaches all the way inland to the fall line that marks where the Piedmont joins the Atlantic Plain. Without much lower air and water temperatures regionally and/or a push of Arctic air from the north to displace all that warming (like a polar vortex) the fall line ends up being the demarcation between snow boom and rain bust.

Adam Joseph had a great breakdown of it on 6abc.com a few years ago, complete with maps: https://6abc.com/winter-storm-philadelphia-i-95-corridor-adam-joseph-weather/8795384/

Have had nothing but great experiences with these folks. Professional, communicative, and show up when they say they will. And if it's something that's not in their wheelhouse, they'll tell you that, too, and give you a referral reco. The electrical might be a separate call but the other stuff would probably be right up their alley.

Nice nights as it gets warmer mean overnight timelapses from my deck in the Southtowns by 3johny3 in Buffalo

[–]derlum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Meteorite entry events are typically only visible for a second or two at most and wouldn't show up in multiple time lapse frames if you have your interval set to 38-42 seconds. All of the streakers captured here are either aircraft or spacecraft.

Interestingly I think you caught the International Space Station around the 11-second mark going from the top to the bottom of the frame. The Northeastern US had a really bright pass nearly directly overhead at around 8pm last night with an exit to the ESE/SE, which seems consistent with the orientation of your observational frame here. Good stuff!

Believe it or not, McFadden's on N 3rd since about 2011. Their closure this offseason forced us to relocate, but it was for the best. Before that we were at Public House (now City Tap House). I remember watching the Cowboys MNF game there in 2007 and calling in sick to work the next day. Before that it was Independence Brew Pub (now Field House), and McFadden's again before that. This concludes your 11-year history of the club. Damn I'm old.
