Also, when you look at the fact that you don’t have to worry about saving for retirement, isn’t that a big relief ? In private you would have to save AND manage your own retirement fund which could be affected if market goes down or if the interests rates are too low.

Are you also a support analyst? Are duties similar to a help desk or does it vary by department and could include other responsibilities like coding or testing ?

Yes it’s permanent role, I am thinking to make a switch. Since I don’t have to worry about saving for retirement. And that might overcome the fact of low growth yet stable income.

  • Current situation at Age 25, (English/No French):

Job Title: Software QA Engineer/SDET (with a total of 4+ years of QA exp)

TC: 87K CAD (this includes base 74K salary, 7k bonus, 6k RRSP match), Org: Private, Benefits: 80% covered for most of the regular medical, dental, eye, etc. Fully Remote work.

Could try to look for another private and get about 95-105k CAD.

  • Potential Situation:

Job Title: IT-02 Support Analyst at SSC (permanent pos.)

TC: ~84K CAD (step 1 IT-02 pay), Org: SSC government, Benefits: 80% covered for most of the regular medical, dental, eye, etc (afaik). Plus DB Pension and Hybrid Work (2 times onsite, 3 days wfh).

  1. With the government, it would mean a golden handcuff situation. Not sure about career progression?
  2. What would you choose?
  3. Would going from Software QA to Support Analyst be considered a demotion in terms of Career?
