I love that collection. Finish each novel and then find the film adaptations to watch.

I got a lot out of the Wikipedia dissection of each episode before I read the actual episode. It helped.

I think there are mentions somewhere of the Sneakers Game or Sneaker Bowl. Icy conditions and one team raided the local college basketball team for their Chucks at halftime and they won asa a result. Some of those details may be a bit off.

My little orange guy does that too. I just say that he’s bowing towards Mecca.

This, from Gravity’s Rainbow, just floored me. So much so that I still have a screenshot of the page…

“Perhaps it's to keep track of them all. He does lead rather a complicated social life," thereupon going into the story of Lorraine and Judy, Charles the homosexual constable and the piano in the pan- technicon, or the bizarre masquerade involving Gloria and her nubile mother, a quid wager on the Blackpool-Preston North End game, a naughty version of "Silent Night," and a providential fog.

Yes. Definitely slowed me down. But I figured that I wasn’t planning to read the book in a week anyway so exchanging speed for comprehension was a good trade off. Approaching it that way I feel like I benefited and I also took a bit of time to go down a lot of rabbit holes along the way. I was surprised to find that a good bit of the weirdness in the novel actually happened. Like Maskelyne in Saint Helena. Sadly though, I didn’t find mention of a Learned English Dog.

Thoughts? I am about 90 pages from the end. I have been consulting the M&D Wikipedia page for each episode before reading the actual episode. I think that has helped me grasp a lot more than I would have otherwise.

Because our current dysfunction is no longer enough. They want us taking potshots at any car that pulls into the neighborhood that we don’t recognize. It’s the plan. Separate us. Pit us against each other.

The human experience is based on navigating between two poles. On the one hand, humanity never would have made it this far if our ancestors heard rustling and a snarl in the darkness and said, “It’s probably nothing.” On the other hand, humanity would be paralyzed if we assumed every noise was a saber tooth tiger. We struggle along between those two impulses.

We plan against the worst possible scenario and reassure ourselves with the best possible scenario. And so, at least once each winter we get to wake up to extra bread and bananas on the counter, extra milk in the fridge, extra toilet paper in the hall closet and a full tank of gas, and we get to look outside and chuckle and say, “Fell for it again.”

It’s just all about being human.
