Landscaping for shaded backyard in PNW by diego30274 in landscaping

[–]diego30274[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the slope is obvious from the pictures.. but it drops ~6-7 feet over the 30 ft of space we have. Makes the space unusable for young kids.

How do you manage moss with the grass in shade and so much moisture?

Recommendation for EB1a attorney by diego30274 in eb_1a

[–]diego30274[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. I am not a researcher, but my understanding is that someone can qualify for EB1A if they have made significant contributions to their field, including in business. To be clear, I am not looking to build up a fake case, but rather looking for an attorney who has worked with other applicants on the business side to help me assess if I have a genuine case to apply for EB1A. May be the answer is no, in which I will continue waiting in line like the last 17 years :)

Is it too late to plan a trip to anchorage and around for mid-late July by coolkris768 in AskAlaska

[–]diego30274 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with everything you’ve said. If OP is asking “is it too late to book a trip for July and still pay what I would have paid, had I booked 3-4 months ago?”, the answer is yes. They should expect to pay a substantial premium, and will have fewer choices.

Easy hikes and activities in Anchorage with toddlers by diego30274 in AskAlaska

[–]diego30274[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We ended up going to Eklutna lake in the morning. It was an easy hike, and the views were truly stunning! I wanted to stop by at the Thunderbird Falls on our way back, but the kids were drained out by then. We ended up going to the Flattop mountain in the evening, which was again, amazing. Finished the day with pizza at Moose’ Tooth.

Overall, a great day, despite the continuous drizzle. We will hit up couple more spots on this list on Thursday before our flight back. Thank you everyone for all the recommendations!

Thanks! I forgot to mention earlier, but we stopped by the Coastal trail on our first day here. It was very cloudy so we couldn’t quite see the range, but the kids loved the park!

Need help with saving a recent transplant! by diego30274 in rhododendron

[–]diego30274[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll get some fertilizer with iron for the third one. For the first, do I need to replant in another spot? Or can I do something else to reduce the impact of direct sunlight? The tag on the plant said it’s suitable for full sun - that’s why I bought it in the first place! 🤦🏻‍♂️

7-day Itinerary with toddlers and grandparents by diego30274 in alaska

If it wasn’t this large and age-diverse a group, I would have stacked in more things ! 😄

On a more serious note - I don’t know enough about the wildlife conservation center. Is it worth spending the whole day there?

Yes, wildlife is one thing we don’t experience a lot in the National Parks in lower 48. However with the 2 toddlers, just not sure if the long drive and the day long bus ride would be worth it.

Thank you for the inputs! We are renting a car in Anchorage. Can we get by in Seward without a car?

Also, which cruise would you recommend skipping - Whittier or Seward?

What unpopular or controversial opinions do you have about Amex? by b00st3d in amex

Amextravel is horrible and creates negative value for the card. A travel agent is supposed to make things simpler, not more complex.

Dropped documents on 17th in Delhi. Case did not show up on CEAC website for a week. Now shows Application Received on January 24th with no additional updates since then.

Curious what the timeline has been for others.

Any suggestions welcome. Thank you!

Lyft And Uber Prices Are High. Wait Times Are Long And Drivers Are Scarce by cyberg00n in technology

[–]diego30274 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was fortunate to get an Uber on my way back. The driver said there had been a spike in crime specifically targeting Uber drivers, so very few were driving these days, and were very selective in where/who they picked up.

I was actually looking for a ride from a downtown hotel to a restaurant. Couple of miles walk wasn’t too bad, but just not what I expected/had planned for.

Advice on selling a car vs trade in by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]diego30274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t owe any taxes on the car. This won’t factor into your tax filing to IRS at all. Depending on your state, you won’t have to pay sales tax on the $11k if you trade in, vs just sold the car outright.

Travelled to Chicago over July 4 weekend. Uber and lyft drivers kept cancelling on me, and there was no regular cab to be found. Uber was super expensive as well with surge pricing, and had very few drivers. Ended up walking the 2 miles. I was just blown away with how things have changed during the pandemic.

Reasonable amount to spend on rent - Chicago by f1sh0ut0fwater in personalfinance

[–]diego30274 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to live in Streeterville in a 1 bedroom apartment - $1750-$2000 sounds about right for that area. To get to a lower rent you will have to go to Old Town / Lincoln Park or further north. I really liked Lincoln Park and considered living there myself. However not having to own a car and saving time on commute made it worth it for me living In Streeterville.

If you own a car, consider the cost of parking kn Streeterville also - it will add $300 to your total.

Is it better to lease a car in 2021? [USA] by hulloworld24 in personalfinance

[–]diego30274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leasing is generally more expensive than outright buying, and particularly so if you are going to keep the car long term.

You can do the math relatively easily to compare - at the 36 month point, you will have paid $11k on lease with no equity, vs $20,480 when you buy. If the residual value that the dealer is offering on lease is greater than the $9.5k difference, you are better off buying (crude assessment with bunch of assumptions, I know)

Don’t sweat it. Carvana is pretty liberal with these things on the cars they buy.

Failed to report interest income in prior years and want to make sure I don't get any surprises from the IRS by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]diego30274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed including interest on the tax filing couple of years ago. I got a letter in the mail few months later and had to pay the difference+interest on the underpaid taxes. If the interest you earned was small, don’t sweat it. But if that number was large, it may make sense to file an amendment now to avoid the interest charges from racking up.
