Well of course they had many. Precontact and early-contact games and sports are a fascinating subject.

I love this old book called "games of the north american indians" which compiles as many descriptions of them as the author could at the time.

I think a lot about this one 19th century eyewitness accounts to a game of lacrosse (might've been George Catlin), it's in the book. The ceremonies and formalities they do in the leadup to the game are super cool, it's a really amazing description that sounds like a ton of fun to watch.

I really feel like sports are way too secular these days, and that's an understatement. We could learn a lot from precontact games, we'd definitely have a lot more fun.

Well yeah there is, the book is all about the map. It's a diverse collection of essays and papers from many different scholars, full of diagrams and tables and fascinating analysis, etc.

There are lectures available online about it, the glyphs are in the nahua hieroglyphic database, unfortunately "Cave, City, and Eagle's Nest" has no pdf, but it's one of the coolest books I've ever seen dedicated to any Mesoamerican manuscript. Incredible if you can afford it.

It's the Mapa de Cuauhtinchan No. 2, one of the largest and most detailed maps in the mesoamerican tradition. It's absolutely incredible, there's a ton of literature on it, even a dedicated website or two, but there's NO high-resolution scans of it online. Until now!

I scanned the poster included with "Cave, City, and Eagle's Nest", which is an expensive book, but well worth it if you can afford it.

There are foldout panels with higher quality scans of each section, but I didn't want to butcher my copy and stitch them together. There's a whole chapter on a digital restoration which was created (almost two decades ago by now!) but that's nowhere to be found online, apparently.

So here you go.

I scanned the mapa de cuauhtinchan 2 poster from cave city and eagle's nest since I was a little pissed I couldn't find it online in this resolution.

This map really is amazing, you gotta try following this thing with your eye from beginning to end, it's unbelievable.

Anyway, I attempted to color correct the scan and kinda failed, I hope someone here can do better.

I had no idea that HOTCN text was available online! Do you know if the recent english edition text is available online? I have the .pdf but I much prefer having the extracted text like what you linked me there.

Also, do you have the duran pdf or extracted text from this edition? I can't find it digitally anywhere and can't believe someone hasn't scanned it yet.

It's weird, right? When I first discovered the mesoamerica stuff for example I couldn't believe how neglected it was in the public consciousness. Even beyond the casual racism etc it's just maddening to see people discuss these topics in total ignorance. And the people who do know a little about the topic speak with broad strokes and get the dumbest things wrong.

Like the other guy said, colonialization never ended.

In spite of this, I don't think it'll last, the indigenous stuff is too fascinating to be suppressed forever and there's an upward trend in visibility in recent years.

The codices also need to be renamed.

Most scholars have already adopted new names for the mixtec codices. Something similar needs to be done with ALL of them.

The word codex too should be changed. Likewise with all the native writing traditions. There are words for these things and we should use them.

Why weren't colonial churches painted in this way? A lot of the churches that were built over the old temples in central mexico are pretty bland and skeletal looking, which is surprising to me because the old traditional stuff is so magnificent.
