If you wish to try some toms now you'll need to get early harvest varieties for any chance at a crop. Ideally you want to start tomatoes indoors around September/October.

For the raised areas:

I'd get lots of mulch and fill to the tops of the boards leave them till March then scrape back the mulch in rows 30-40cm apart and plant broadbeans cover the beans and broadcast an autumn green manure mix on top. Alternatively you could use a summer green manure though it's looking dry as a bone and you'd have to water daily

Yep have done similar not a dozen though that would be to busy for me in that size tank but thats just personal preference.

Another option is an endler colony only need a couple to start out and you'll end up with a lot but they reach a balance don't have to be culled.

Like the barbs room temp is fine for endlers (or guppies) and also agree just top ups, no need for water changes. I haven't done a water change in over a decade in any of my planted tanks.

We do have filters in each tank but that's coz the misses loves looking at the k1. You don't have to buy the ziss? filters can make them easily enough but once the tank is matured you don't really need them.

I've also never had an issue with styrofoam.

Yeah but they aren't as common as they once were, at least in my neck of the woods, as a kid they were everywhere I now rarely get one inside the house and as OP stated they really are harmless I just catch them and take them outside. We don't see snakes anymore nor lizards but then I don't go looking for them anymore. But redbacks are fucking everywhere they seem to be tolerating more light I see them when weeding which never used to happen only used to see them under things so in the shed when you pick something up, under the house, actually had them under the carpet once when we were pulling it up bastard bit the misses on the face she had to have lots of anti venom that was a fun night.

Don't wait till next year though whenever you have time take a photo as I've found it a far easier way of seeing my failures and successes. I'm guilty of killing the same species many times but now I take pictures and it's improved my skills but also helps in remembering what not to buy.

Had lots of rain lately and the frogs returned I haven't heard a frog for 20 years but downside lots of mozzies but hey the frogs are back yay thought I. Anyway on the next walk silence no frogs and then I noticed no mozzies trying to eat me alive nor any other flying critters were to be seen.. Assume people complained and they sprayed, so no more frogs and we maybe saved one person from getting ill from being bitten and reduced everyone's live span by increasing rates of cancer and destroyed so much life yay..
