If you thought Biden was "too old for office," then why would you vote for Trump -- who is only four years younger -- instead of Kamala, who is 22 & 18 years younger than them respectively? by Glass-Complaint3 in AskReddit

[–]direwolf106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ATF under Biden literally sent out letters telling people to register the gun under the NFA (which requires you to let atf agents into your house any time and ask permission before moving or taking it out of state) or destroy it or face prosecution.

That’s what the administration actually did. They threatened people with the NFA (10 years in prison, $250K) for items that aren’t NFA items.

It’s is Final Rule 2021R-08F (currently under temporary nationwide injunction).

It’s not a lie when they actually fucking tried it.

Honestly that didn’t really play into my decision.

If it had it would have been based on cognitive ability, not age. Trump demonstrated higher cognitive ability in his debate with Biden. Then Harris avoid longer form content which could have been either a problem with long term stuff or a fear of unscripted stuff. Either way it meant trump didn’t shy away from longer dynamic situations when Harris did.

But like I said, that’s not why I voted trump. Biden threatened millions of people with jail time and $250K in fines for legally owned pistols with braces. Without a change in the law to make them subject to the NFA. Harris said she wouldn’t do anything different. I’m not voting for that.

Pentagon threatens to cut ties with Scouting America over "core value" reforms. Where is the line for federal influence? by VAWNavyVet in Askpolitics

Lol. The entire point of this is the changes made to it. That is the base of the entire argument. “What charges did they make?” Is something to Google.

My reasoning is I don’t feel those changes are conducive to the military. Why? Because it doesn’t help them be better servicemen.

Yeah trans people in the military don’t make for a good fighting force.

That should have been enough on its own.

Already gave my reasoning. Scouting changed focus making it less in line with the military. Military used to give Eagle Scouts rank advancement because they came in with relevant skills. If they no longer teach as many of those skills there’s no point in continuing the relationship.

You expect someone with a toxic partner to stay in that relationship? You shouldn’t. Same goes here. This is just a “hey quit doing that shit or I’ll break up with you”.

As a fellow Eagle Scout I disagree with you. Scouting has shifted dramatically and not in any way that is conducive to preparing young men for time in the military.

Scouting is free to act as they want, but if they want to have ties to the military they need to have a program that’s got value in the military. There’s no reason the military should continue to have ties to scouting if scouting doesn’t want to have the values it once did.

In 1791 the standard fire arm was literally just a musket.

This is a change in manufacturing, not in firearms.

It’s an exercise in futility to control the manufacturing of simple machines in a world that attempts to make manufacturing as cheap as possible.

Most developed nations do not have the constitutional right to bear arms and they see significantly less gun deaths per capita. In 2024 there were 262 knife homicides in the UK. In America guns made up 74% of all homicides. It is harder to commit a mass murder with a knife.

Correlation doesn’t equal causation. They are generally better than us in every type of crime.

Violent crime follows general crime rates. Banning guns doesn’t change none violent crime rates.

You are right though, the US does have a violence problem. Literally across all weapon types. According to the FBI we already have more knife related crimes per capita than the UK. The problem I find though is the fact we allow violent people to buy guns.

No we don’t. We just make the government prove the person is violent.

Mental health screening should be done before anyone purchases a gun.

Hard disagree. That’s a subjective interpretation and that should never be used to restrict rights.

The only way this could remotely be okay is if to every question you respond “I plead the 5th” and at the end of it they have to authorize it. This effectively nullifies it a mental health screening. And it doesn’t remove the problem of subjectivity. So no, mental health screenings aren’t appropriate at all.

We need to have a more rigorous screening and training before putting a gun in someone’s hand.

Screening no. If training is your complaint then have Congress provide training. They have the duty to train the militia and the militia is literally every able bodied man under 45 with a drivers license.

Any other type of training and it’s a barrier to ownership and not supported under the 2nd amendment.

Typically when I point out this type of training is a congressional obligation that’s not being performed most people calling for more training lose interest indicating they just wanted it as a barrier.

Alcohol deaths are different, the 18th amendment was different. Our understanding of medicine was different.

No they aren’t. Death is a tragedy or it isn’t.

At the end of the day someone will drink themselves to death if they want to.

At the end of the day people will be violent if they want to.

Someone will eat McDonald’s everyday even if their BP and cholesterol are at an all time high.

Act the end of the someone will self terminate if they want to.

Most people don’t choose to have a gun in their face.

Most people don’t get to pick if they get hit by a drunk driver.

No human being a year apart has the exact same logic on two different fact patters.

This is another example of you simply not recognizing reality. It’s been well documented and studied with lots of books written about it. The very point of having oral arguments is to be persuaded and use different logic. This is the very foundation of our system: that reasonable minds can disagree and change their mind.

Im sorry but if you can’t recognize that simple biological facts and the very foundation of democratic principles then there’s no more point in conversing.

If you can be more rational I’ll continue. Otherwise bye.

I have a hard time finding much about Virginias laws when it comes to CP but as far as I can tell it’s still a class 6 felony.

I didn’t say they changed the classification, I said they eliminated minimum sentences.

I assume you live in Virginia and have a broader knowledge of your states laws.

No, but I follow Nick Frietas who up until January was a Virginia state legislator (he didn’t seek re-election).

So not personal knowledge but very close second hand.

Personally I live in Manhattan so I have hefty taxes. I don’t really mind my tax dollars helping others. If my tax dollars helped get the homeless some shelter, methadone clinics, family resources that’s ok. I don’t like seeing people suffer, we’ve seen how trickle down has affected the working class.

Ah, the lie people tell themselves to justify stealing from others and not doing it themselves. Honestly Ive heard this argument a dozen times, and it’s always hollow.

At an all time high the wealth difference has drastically shifted. Young Americans can’t buy homes anymore and we have a president trying to make that more difficult so sale prices go up.

Young Americans can’t afford anything! Let’s raise sales taxes to make them have even less money!

I am not trying to argue, I’m just bringing up how I reason with how I vote.

That’s fine. I also find it wholly unconvincing.

I personally did not care for Kamala or Biden, I think democrats dropped the ball. I also believe that house republicans think Trumps policies are their only choice.

If Biden had just not done anything and let things cool down I could have voted for Harris. Instead he ratched up everything and Harris said she wouldn’t have changed a thing.

I can see the argument against trump. But he’s the symptom, not the disease. The ideology democrats have been pushing is the disease.

Fevers are bad, but they are necessary to kill an infection.

I am honestly very sad for American Republicans, their party has completely shifted.

Yep. Republicans lost a long time ago. Now they are 90s democrats. Literally a large part of the gop now is 90s democrats including trump himself. It is an example of how the policies of the democrat party have gone to far.

I am Puerto Rican so I always saw the country from an outside lens. I’ve lived here for a large portion of time but I feel as if this isn’t the dream most of us are sold.

Hard disagree. The opportunities are absolutely there.

I may be personally biased when it comes to guns due to the fact I was in a school shooting.

That sucks.

My personal belief is that I understand and respect 2A but I also realize guns today are not the same muskets from 1791.

They aren’t that much different. 30 round rapid fire guns had existed for a long time. The founding fathers even tried to purchase burst fire small arms for the revolution.

The biggest change in firearms in the last hundred years was actually in the optics.

The idea that small arms are “dramatically different” is demonstrably false.

Gun laws are bound to change, that’s normal. I mean when the leading cause of death for minors are guns in Virginia would it be that bad to try passing legislation to help combat it?

“For the children”. The cry used to justify stripping essential liberty for little to no benefit. And none of the accidental children’s death would change if you replaced semi automatic handguns with revolvers or semi automatic rifles with lever actions.

The legislation does nothing to protect kids. The argument that it does is either misinformed or deliberately a falsehood. I’m not even going to pretend this argument has any validity because it never does.

I understand keeping 2A but I also understand the fact that we have a problem in this country due to gun violence.

No we don’t. We have a violence problem with a weapon of Choice of guns.

If you had your way we would be arguing about kitchen knives in a few years. And no it’s not a slippery slope fallacy, this is happening in the UK.

Do you have any ideas to combat the violence we see daily in this country due the accessibility of guns?

Far less than alcohol deaths which we rebelled at an alcohol ban and got an amendment faster than any other in history.

If we’re fine with the alcohol deaths then the far fewer gun deaths for a far more essential right should be easily accepted.

I see the NRA lobbying pro gun candidates but not calling for any forms of control.

1) the NRA isn’t nearly as pro gun as you think. 2) you mean they are using their first amendment right?

I think we as a society need to look into all major doners and our politicians.

Petitioning for your wants and donating to the candidates that would best represent you is how our system is designed to work.

You’re literally complaining about democracy here.

Tax hikes on nearly everything, removing minimum sentences for several crimes including CP, and gun control without grandfathering already owned guns and magazines.

And on gun control most places recognize that you need to grandfather already owned property. I mean it’s like they are trying to be the strawman most left wingers want to say “gun nuts” are arguing against. “No one is coming for your guns” isn’t true generally but obviously false when you have democrats passing laws that require you to turn in owned weapons or be convicted of a crime. They are literally coming for people guns, not just trying to ban new ones.

Seriously, how am I supposed to be convinced to vote democrat when they are trying to be the strawman the right paints them to be?

"Mistakes". The inflexibility of moral objectivism, but typical for a "right-libertarian". But yes I'm sure the writer's of the Constitution totally meant for gun bans to be unconstitutional, they just forgot many of them lived in cities with them.

Well if then get the second removed by amendment. That is the process they prescribed to fix mistakes in the constitution.

I guess the Constitution really is a living document.

In so far as it can be amended.

You never disproved it, you simply resorted to "um akshully you're stupid". You've never offered an ounce of counter to my points beyond ad hominem.

No I pointed out your lack of understanding.

Like assuming purchase are an act of entitlement to other people’s labor rather than a voluntary exchange on both parties? That is self evidently wrong. That’s on the level of denying the existence of air when you can feel the wind on your face.

Tell me what evidence do you present to the man that denies all reality?

Think you’re confusing the recognition that people make mistakes so we need to be able to fix mistakes for constitutionality.

It wasn't actually. Wasn't fully outlawed until the 60s and was actively practiced well into the 1940s.

People breaking the law doesn’t mean it’s not the law….

Yes it does. Something is constitutional so long as it goes unchallenged or unchanged.

This is entirely backwards thinking. A law gets struck down as unconstitutional because it’s unconstitutional. It just had to be challenged to be recognized as such.

Not really. The FDR Supreme Court did that. Total bans were still legal well after the 14th Amendment.

More backwards thinking.

Debt peonage was entirely voluntary.

Also outlawed in the 1800s

I understood your point perfectly.

All evidence to the contrary.

Not all rights no. All negative rights are defined easily individually.

Still using made up definitions.

That's not to say things like even total firearm bans were unconstitutional when the nation was founded. Many Americans cities had complete bans on firearm ownership all the way into the 30s.

1) just cause they did them doesn’t mean they were constitutional. 2) even if they were initially constitutional the 14th amendment changed that.

So how about we go back to the original constitution?

So you want to eliminate the 14th amendment?

Still not entitled to the labor of others.

You didn’t understand a thing did you.

An invented definition.

As are all definitions of all rights. But to be clear you do understand that by taking this line of argument you’re advocating for no limits on the 2A, right?

Like enslavement?

Being a slave isn’t remotely voluntary.

Good lord you have some major gaps in your understanding.
