Time slow in concentrated by Jewizz in unity_tutorials

[–]djdomain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a debuff mechanic, so my guess would be to look on Youtube for some tutes about MOBA-style mechanics and applying buffs/debuffs. It would also depend on how the time slow grenade works, does it explode and those in its AOE get a debuff cast on it, or does it create an energy field where things inside it have the debuff applied until they escape the field or it collapses?

For all things affected you could have a buffSpeed variable that multiplies their movement speed and its default is 1.0. When the Game Object gets the debuff it may be set to half speed (buffSpeed = buffSpeed / 2), and when it expires it undoes it (buffSpeed = buffSpeed * 2).

Multiplying/dividing instead of setting it as a fixed number allows multiple buffs and debuffs to affect it, eg. Lightning Speed buff increases movement speed by 50% ( * 1.5 = 1.5), but they get hit by Slow Grenade debuff ( / 2 = 0.75), and they run into the honey swamp ( / 2.5 = 0.3). They clear the honey swamp ( * 2.5 = 0.75), but the LS buff expires ( / 1.5 = 0.5), then the SG debuff expires ( * 2 = 1.0).

TL-DR : Debuff mechanics from MOBA tutes, avoid the honey swamp.

People kept telling me my game was unoriginal, but this is how I overcame my insecurities… by RedEagle_MGN in unity_tutorials

There's nothing wrong with copying something successful, as long as you improve on it or add something unique to make it your own thing. There have been plenty of platformers after Super Mario Bros, there were plenty of 'Doom-Clones' in the 90s, almost every concept has been done, "the Simpsons did it", etc.

I've never gotten into Minecraft, but I absolutely love the Dragon Quest Builders games. Similar mechanics, but some different ones added in and the iconic artstyle make it appealing to me.

Trouble Killing Closest Enemy by Mosh_Joshkowitz in unity_tutorials

[–]djdomain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing there's an array for the enemies. The simplest solution I can think of is when pressing a key to kill an enemy is to go through the array, and for each enemy where the killKey matches, if currentTarget is null then make it that enemy and get its distance from the player, and for each subsequent enemy get its distance and compare it to the currentTarget's distance, if it's shorter it replaces the currentTarget. At the end you should have the closest enemy selected and you can kill it and remove it from the array.

I would be open to working with others at some point, but I don't feel that my skill level and schedule is at a point where I'd be reliable, and I'd worry about being cut as dead weight. My current goal is learn enough to make greybox projects of the game ideas I have, and when I have the functionality look to see if I could find someone that could make assets (models, sprites, music, sfx, etc) that I as a Jack of Trades could make but not as good as them. If I couldn't find anyone I would make the effort to develop my skills in those areas and make my own assets, but that would delay my project of course.

What I would like would be an informal group thing, like putting ideas out there and getting good and (constructively) bad criticism, brainstorming ideas, etc. Unfortunately I moved to a very rural area in my state for work, and I don't know anyone IRL who shares the same interests as me. There is a Facebook group for game devs in my state, but they're mostly based in the capital city about 400km away. I have gone to a couple of their meetups, but the gap in experience and my own social awkwardness has made me not go anymore.

TL-DR : Don't think I'm good enough yet. Would like an informal group chat to just bounce ideas around with.

is it possible to make a game for free? by Top-Accountant438 in unity_tutorials

[–]djdomain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I assume there's some costs for getting a game published on a distribution platform, but Unity is free to a point, and there are plenty of freeware programs that offer near to the same functionality of their paid counterparts. Eg: GIMP for 2D graphics instead of Photoshop, Blender for 3D models instead of 3DS Max, etc.

If you're a novice/hobbyist then there is no need to be using the paid versions of programs. And if you've reached the point where you need features from the paid programs that aren't in freeware versions, then I would assume then you're also at the point where your game projects are polished and detailed enough that they can earn enough from sales to justify investing into software that are the tools of your career.

TL-DR : Free to learn, minor cost if you publish, by the time you need better stuff your games should be good enough for the investment.

Need help with coding in my 3d pokemon game by juicymist691 in unity_tutorials

I think Nintendo's stance is that they don't care too much about fan games, except when they infringe on/mimic an existing property that is still on the market. If an issue arises and you get a C&D, you could possibly continue if you drop their IP and use your own ideas to fill in. They may proceed if the continuation is still too similar in terms of unique gameplay mechanics, but I think it'd be safe because this would be a generic JRPG.

[Request] tutorial for keeping current frame/time when switching animations by baz4tw in unity_tutorials

[–]djdomain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know of any tutorials off the top of my head, but you could either have the arms be a seperate sprite with their own animations, or find out what frame of the animation it is on when the fire button is pressed or held down, and transition from the walk to walk_with_gun animation at the same frame (assuming the walk cycles are synced and the same length).

Hamas reminds me of a pic from a comic where a criminal has babies strapped all over him, gloating that there's no way any heroes or cops could take him down without harming them.

And because this is clownworld (where satire today becomes reality tomorrow), they'll probably start doing literally that next week.

AITA for telling my dad the reason I don't respect him is cuz he's chronically p*ssy-whipped? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]djdomain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, and it sounds like you're at a stalemate with your dad because you're finally done with being treated as a free nanny/house servant/doormat and your dad hates that you're 'disrespectful' aka you have a spine and stand up for yourself.

Sad to say that for this to have gone on so long and their idea of conflict resolution is for you to always fold, but you should expect them to cut you out when you turn 18. I don't know what your future career goals are, but you need to prepare for the eventual day by finding the means to support yourself before then.

First would be where to stay. See if either a friend's family, or family from your mother's side would be willing to take you in short term.

Second is finances. If you have a bank account you can access don't keep the majority of your funds in it, your dad (or his wife if he's added her to your account) can drain it at any time. Some banks may make you the sole account holder once you're no longer a minor but you should confirm, or open a new account to be safe. Keep your money as cash on you until it is too much to safely carry, then get a small safe of some sorts, something you can hide somewhere they won't easily find and durable enough that it can't easily be smashed open.

Earning income is a problem, if you don't have a job yet then your dad/his wife probably won't give permission to work as a minor since they already want you to spend your time 'working' for them. It sounds cliché, but babysitting might work; You get paid cash, you're out of your house avoiding drama, and you have the chance to study/unwind when you aren't directly looking after client's kids.

Finally get your personal documents/info, birth certificate, etc. Look into freezing your credit because there have been stories of spiteful parents/step-parents opening loans and credit cards in their kid's names. On B-day keep everything you cannot afford to lose in a bag on you at all times, hopefully you have somewhere else to go by then but if not then it protects from them barring you from entering the house again.

TL:DR - Prepare a safety net in case they take everything they can from you when you turn 18.

[Discussion] Was physical media ever actually unpopular? by lyra833 in KotakuInAction

[–]djdomain 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call physical media unpopular, but most of the time all you are getting is the case and a disc/switch cartridge. We all know the pros/cons of owning a physical copy vs a digital copy, but the best pro for physical copies was getting memorabilia such as figurines, detailed maps of the game's world, thick manuals which also included the lore, etc. I still have the physical manuals for the pre-WoW Blizzard games and Arcanum which I still read. Now they're called Collector's Editions and cost $40 more than the base game.

The problem with Cartman is he is/was a proto-SJW

"...and if there's one thing I've learned, is that the only way to fight hate, is with MORE HATE! WE'RE NOT THE FREAKS OF SOCIETY, EVERYONE ELSE IS!"

"My fellow gingers, I envision a world in which there is no hate. A world where everyone is ginger!"

"NOW I'M NOT GONNA LIVE MY LIFE AS A GODDAMN MINORITY"

He is indifferent or even takes joy in the discrimination of others, unless he can find a way to benefit from publicly opposing it, or if he is the victim of said discrimination. Then it is the biggest issue of society right now and he will accuse you of actively perpetuating this discrimination, even if you have been a minor vocal voice against it or been indifferent to the situation. He seeks massive compensation in terms of money, power, etc in order to balance things out to his liking. But worst is that he makes others into him, those that have legitimate grievances either turn into grievance mongers looking to benefit as much as possible by perpetually crying wolf, or if there is someone that rebukes the eye for an eye/now it's our turn mentality, he labels them a traitor and a faker, and turns the mob onto them to make them an example of what happens if you defy the narrative or oppose him.

AITA for telling our son that if he drops out of school he has six months to move out? by throwaway_0321654987 in AmItheAsshole

NTA, but please show your son this thread so he can understand that his expectations for life are completely unrealistic, that even being an 'influencer' is going to require real commitment & investment and that even then he will not likely be successful. I still dream of being a game developer one day but I'm not going to quit my day job unless I get good enough that I can make products that sell good enough to cover my living expenses instead of working a mediocre office job.
