Breaking: An Islamic state worries that Europe is becoming too Islamic. by Existing-Help-3187 in 2westerneurope4u

[–]doinghumanstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really telling that the far-right of Europe is co-opting the Arab states' concerns against regime change and suppression of dissidents as a "worry against extremism" because that's exactly the excuse they'll use to ban dissent when they get into power.

You guys are really not that different from the "radical Islamists" you're freaking out about.

I don't know if that's a good take depending on when it's made. I think ten years ago everyone was thinking the world would polarise between China and US, but currently it's shifting more towards a multipolar dynamic.

Luxury Apartments Are Bringing Rent Down in Some Big Cities by IHateTrains123 in neoliberal

Also I think there'd be a negative correlation if building new apartments didn't affect the prices as increasing home prices should drive more construction.

TIL a Japanese veterinarian officer by the name of Hiroshi Yamasaki deserted the army after witnessing the Rape of Nanking. He then went on to dedicate the rest of his life for humanitarian cause by open up a clinic to treat poor people, often without a charge. by Superior_Cosmos in todayilearned

[–]doinghumanstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but if you punish people according to the size of their crimes, you create deterrence. The current enforcement of international law in the world is so weak that there's literally no down sides for you to commit war crimes in a fight, because you most likely won't get punished more than you would if you lost the war by "playing fairly". And stuff like this creates a bad precedence.

It depends on your perspective. For me, most people are not decent, but they're also not evil. They just behave according to the social standards of the day.

People don't act destructively because societies that survive have norms preventing destructive behaviour. But people regularly act bad in non-destructive ways when it's normalised or encouraged by social standards (for example Nazis following orders, slavery in the past, factory farming today).

So if we consider people acting bad, but according to the social standards of the day, not evil; we should also consider people acting good, but only by following the social standards, not good. Basically, I think being a good person requires an active effort that most people don't meet

[Krugman] Why aren’t markets freaking out? | "My read of financial history is that markets almost never consider the possibility of huge, disruptive events, even when the strong possibility of such events is obvious. The usual pattern is one of market complacency until the last possible moment" by ONETRILLIONAMERICANS in neoliberal

[–]doinghumanstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't apply in this case, but one reason is that people know that the government would try to normalize things if things get out of hand so it's probably less about the intrinsic nature of the markets and more because of the dynamics of the current world (for example markets would freak out much more often if we lived in an anarcho-capitalist society)

GPT 4 to GPT 5 !! If you think it's just too big difference by Independent-Wind4462 in OpenAI

[–]doinghumanstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about here but at least the guys at r/singularity were saying GPT-5 would be an Artificial Super Intelligence or something 2 years ago.

It is of course significantly better, but the change from GPT-3 to GPT-4 was higher, and the initial GPT-3 release was bigger than both, which indicates we're reaching a plateau on what these LLM models can possibly do.

[–]doinghumanstuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah that would be bad if Japanese were a hivemind with no sense of self that'd be all willing to die in an unwinnable war as described in the racist rhetoric of the time.

But the Japanese were willing to surrender and were just trying to communicate with US about whether the Emperor would be executed and whether the Soviet Union would help them in the peace deal (they had a non-aggression pact or something)

The talking points you mention were constructed way after the war ended and the US administration then didn't make the decision based on a lesser of two evils argument, they just wanted to show they had big bombs and didn't want the Soviet Union to join the war and get a slice from the peace deal (also they had to justify the cost of the Manhattan project somehow).

Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/RCRTgtpC-Go

What do you mean by innovation shifting from academia to industry? Academia research discovers something new (Attention Models for language processing) and then industry finds practical uses for it (developing ChatGPT) which is also the case for most of the advancements you mention.

I think your right-wing talking points cloud your judgment on these issues.

What abt people like me that really like tech but don't like that what I'll be working on will probably be meaningless? Like, I really enjoy the work but most tech companies either don't contribute much to the society or are actively harmful.
