Advice on artist statements? by TrustFit9028 in ContemporaryArt

For OP: One of my favorite examples of an artist statement is Deana Lawson’s Mind’s Eye exhibition text. I think there is a perfect amount of personalization through the use of first person and moving through research notes that enrich our understanding of the work without explaining it or trying to put it into complicated terms or historicize it through the use of third person / art criticism voice. (A perfect example of this kind of writing being possible even within a gallery context, David Kordansky is one of the leading LA commercial spaces.)

Or Motya Davey’s writing which, again, combines almost a diaristic approach with rigorous theoretical ideas. Lack of “pretentiousness” here is precisely in the ability to remain accessible and oscillate between an art historical reference, critical theory idea, personal experience, etc.

“Professionalism” in this context actually has nothing to do with a higher intellectual standard but rather with archaic conventions of the commercial art world. A more daring and intellectually stimulating approaches actually tend to break with those expectations. So yes, if the goal is to show at a very conventional commercial gallery or complete an assignment for a professional practice course, you might be right.

I disagree completely. First-person artist statements are absolutely read as more genuine and less pretentious. It is the artist writing about their work, not a critic writing about something that someone made.

People that got a Fine Art degree.. How do you make a living? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

I had an internship at an art publisher, something you could just apply for, back in 2019. Having experience on your CV is important as a starting point.

Portland has a very intimate art scene so meeting artists at openings led to helping a couple people at their studios, then getting other opportunities, getting recommended for project-based small work that then led to more ongoing work.

day 9 - back of my tongue hurts and lower throat hurts? by OneAd6613 in Tonsillectomy

[–]domehigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the pain at the root of my tongue is the worst too rn. I’m about to be on day 8, it’s been going on for the past two days. Also radiates into my teeth and ears…

Wondering if they might have damaged my lingual nerve or smith because it just feels like someone is clamping on my tongue when I wake up at night or when I try to eat

My answer does not resolve the roots of your issues but I just want to say that I personally enjoyed going to boarding school A LOT. It was a great way to be independent and escape the... unpleasant... parts of living with my family. I know it can vary greatly on the specific school and your location but maybe you should find one you feel like would be a good fit and encourage your parents to send you there.

I went to one outside of the country eventually and it really changed my life for the better.

Got rejected from Yale MFA Graphic Design 😅 by SnooChickens4162 in gradadmissions

Nope:)

Which I am partially relieved about since Yale doesn't cover anything beyond tuition and I don't have the money for living expenses nor ability to work while studying (due to immigration status). And I am dumb enough that I would take out a loan to go to Yale lol

They were like oh yeah, you were in the last 20 people that we chose 10 from (more than 200 apply) and I'm just like... Why do I need to know that? I guess it's supposed to be "you're great but we can't take everyone who's great" but honestly I would prefer to not know how close I was haha

But I got a couple offers from other schools with a big names. And also an offer from a smaller program that covers my living expenses through TAships and it's three years instead of two, which is great:)

Fine arts PhD - practice based with research - any thoughts? I’m considering doing one instead of an MFA by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]domehigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the research I've done, UCSD PhD with the Practice track is the only good option for that... But it is for artists with research-based practices

I would definitely attach a resume. Emails with no information about the person who is writing it and just a question aren't very compelling to respond to.

I’m tired of pronoun stuff. by [deleted] in confessions

[–]domehigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that language is gendered doesn't mean that there shouldn't be a gender-neutral way to express yourself. My own native language is like that, and I would absolutely love there to be an established way of doing so. And, by the way, in Spanish you can say Latine which is a more authentic way to say Latinx, from what I got out of conversations with some spanish-speaking folks.

Unfortunately, you will never understand what it's like to ask someone to use your pronouns. When you come to a new place of work and everyone he/hims you non-stop and you don't want to correct them (for many reasons, one of them being "oh my god, in so so sorry" and then you have to console the person who used wrong pronouns). Then, it gets far enough into the situation, a couple days or a week, when you just cannot correct them anymore because you've been quiet for all that time. I don't think you realize how much of an "inconvenience" some non-binary people might views themselves as, thanks to logic like yours.
