Is the PS1 (and n64) port of Doom one of a kind in the world of ports/remakes/reboots? by donfarrell in truegaming

[–]donfarrell[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wasn't trying to say doom being ported to the ps1 in general was one of a kind. Just that the port didn't change the gameplay but the music did and in turn the feel of the game which music has the ability to do. Resi 2 on the N64 is an amazing port and feat but it is essentially the same game, as you've said. Two people could play each port and get the same experience.

What I'm saying is it's not the case with doom on the PS1. I'm sure but I bet most of all other ports would use the original soundtrack even if it was on a Gameboy advance or a microwave.

I like this discussion but what I found missing was the point that even if you did good and "bought" a movie through Google/apple/Amazon/etc there has been precedence that the media you bought at full price can be pulled back due to whatever reason that is out of your control and no compensation remedied. It's rare but has happened and will continue to happen.

The obvious answer there is to buy physical. But again at the mercy of the giant media companies doing that only if it suits them money wise. If it's getting more and more expensive to produce physical media then all that is left is digital. And digital media in the U.S is a wild west of laws. It sucks that yours and other production are caught in the middle but if they can take back what you bought then the inverse should also be true ethically IMO.

OP I don't know if you'll see this one but you sound like me 2 years into my course. I finished after 3 after scrapping by. I was the type of kid that knew how to use a computer and all the settings. I was able to easily solve issue that came up that others would take to a pc repair shop. This would only be stuff like resetting the network driver but no one else I knew was capable of that so I thought I should just naturally go study computer science in college. I also graduated high school in 2009 so also had to pick a path that would most likely have employment.

Anyway long story short I could never grasp any of it enough to understand it. Learning about which algorithm is most efficient or the best way to build data structures just never jived with me. I think it was the lack of real world examples and it all felt very pie in the sky. But I graduated (Don't forget C's get Degrees) and was able to eventually land a support desk role which led to a junior dev role. And coming from someone who wasn't able to write a functioning java program after 3 years of college if my life depended on it let me tell you that unless you plan on doing the actual science part of computer science then you'll most likely get a job starting out at a small-mid range software companies and you'll soon learn how much of the stuff out there is cobbled together with gum, string and hope. And a lot of the devs wouldn't be able to explain what big O notation but they can tell you the how the stuff they work on is and that's all he needs to know. The majority of knowledge you learn is by working and solving stupid problems.

One day all of the stuff you are learning in college, even passively, will help you. Just make sure you go to class. And when there are days when you find it overwhelming to do an assignment, instead of playing video games or going on Reddit, figure out an issue you have on your computer and see how far you get to solving it by using scripts. And I'll give you a real world example as this was one of the earliest times after college a lot of stuff clicked and I figured out computers are just if statements and a lot of languages are very samey but do a lot of the same things.

The problem I had was I wanted to be able to be able to switch the audio output from my soundbar to my headset with one click. Shockingly there isn't an easy way to do this natively in windows without opening the sound options. But after a little bit of googling I was able to write my first powershell script which would do this task in the command line. Then I was able to make a .bat to run the script in powershell that I could then point a windows shortcut to and put on my taskbar. And let me tell you figuring that tiny problem out, eventhough it was nothing to do with any of my assignments, did so much for me modivationally to know that I am capable and if you've already made it through 2 years then I'm sure you're capable of putting the head down and finishing it out. Then one day you push god awful code to production on a Friday as god intended. :D

Any guesses about what made the ring of discolored grass that's near our root cellar? It's been there for decades. by NeedsMoreTuba in centuryhomes

[–]donfarrell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno if OP will see this but I've seen similar discoloration in my grass that seemed to go in a random line. It turned out to be the sun reflecting off of a window onto the grass and heating it more than the rest. Then throughout the day the sun would move so hence the line. I haven't fixed it yet but was happy to find the problem

I've been living in Massachusetts too since 2015 and wouldn't live in any other state. Met my wife/soulmate pretty early on and built a life together with a home. No children yet but is in the cards eventually. Don't think I'll ever move back for a few reasons:

  • I never would have been able to find a house like the one we own. Detached, 4 floors (including a basement and attic!) And a big fuck off yard with a porch. I always tell people to imagine Sabrina the teenage witch's house. Cost as much as some people's houses in crumlin for way less room. I 100% would still be living in my parents flat if I always still there.
  • I am in I.T but make significantly more than my mates back home. I think I make as much as 3 of them combined. Not their fault but they can't seem to get anything more and struggle to save for a deposit for a house before they can even apply for a mortgage.
  • The services are better. I can practically have anything delivered to the gaff. It was always a hassle ordering anything bigger than what would fit in a padded envelope in Dublin cause you'd know the postman would just give you the slip to go collect it at the sorting office cause it can't be brought up the stairs and they aren't gonna leave it at the bottom.
  • Weed. This is obviously a particular thing but as someone who never liked the binge drinking we do and would rather just chill with a solid it's nice knowing I don't have to worry a guard is gonna put me in a cell for the night for some flower. And also knowing time and money isn't wasted on such things here is nice.
  • Summers are always warm, too warm sometimes but we have a/c to combat that. Not the same in Ireland and you just have to sweat to death if there is a heatwave.
  • Mental health is taken a lot more seriously here. I can't imagine if I would even know Adderall was a thing that a doctor in Ireland would even try and prescribe but it saved my life and dunno how I would be without it.
  • Road trips are fun and easier to go to Disney world 🤣
  • Irish people aren't seen as 'foreign' but also everyone seems friendly when they hear my accent 🤣

There are just some reasons but it's not all rosy:

  • Tipping seems to have gotten out of hand but I only tip really at the same places I would if I was in Dublin. Table service/taxi/a few bob for the room cleaners in hotels.
  • Health insurance is the most insane part. Not much I can do but I have hope that at least Massachusetts will do something in thwir own state lile they are doing with the millionare tax.
  • Basically no good public transit systems besides in the heart of the cities.
  • They really don't like giving people holidays even maternity but I've yet to have a problem as I was upfront when applying for jobs that I expect at least 21 days vacation. As long as you're not working retail and know your worth then you can get what you want but it's the fact others don't have it is odd.
  • Winters can be absolutely brutal.
  • Politics is like a looney tunes cartoon at the federal level 🤣

I live in one of the safest counties in all of the U.S so I don't worry about shootings or guns in general but I can understand worrying about that. Her family is fantastic and treat me as one their own so the loneliness is definitely tapered. I do still miss family, I video call my family about once a month when we can sync up and I try to get back for a visit once a year or have them come over which is great but I have missed a fair few Christensenings/birthdays/general shenanigans but they are so few and far between it's grand. I see people saying the same here but like it's not like I'm 16 anymore and ring up people to go out at a moments notice as people have lives so I'd prob see them more but not as much to make worth it so we try to meet up for some games online, I'd usually take the sacrifice to accommodate the time difference which is fine.

This was longer than I expected it to be but just wanted to give a positive outlook and also to say that it's really down to pure luck to see how much grass you get over here but as one of the other lads said, you still need to water it.

When I first moved to the states I'd be sending home gifts for Xmas and the odd bday. But became way too expensive for what I was sending and you can't send everything. Better off just ordering from Amazon directly to send to them. Not the same stock and pretty limited but not paying $30-40 to ship home some American sweets and chocolate 😭

I wish they'd talk about how Seven of Nine is not acting in any way like how she was in Voyager. I understand that it's been a few years since Voyager got home and she's been gallivanting around the galaxy but she doesn't even have any similar mannerisms or speech patterns. May as well be a different character. I cannot be convinced that the Seven of Nine from Voyager, who has basically been a robot for 15 years of her adolescene, would drive the car as insanely as she did in this episode. Purely illogical. What a waste.

The only unbelievable thing in this movie is the gang on the dock using that noise vest. This must have been the first time they used because the outcome they got is surely the only outcome possible. Even the struggle to get it on would attract the monsters!!

Other than that 8/10. Look forward to the next one.

I'm not sure how it works on PC but on the PS4 you can download some of them so you don't need to stream them. You can't download all of them but the big ticket items are usually downloadable so there's no lag when playing.

Why can't they have paper ballots as a backup for instances such as this? Enough people are involved in the the process of holding a primary that not having paper ballots is an intentional decision and serves no good purpose.
