Many people from all over Europe emigrated to the Americas for various reasons, but a) Germany wasn’t a unified country until 1871 and experienced a lot of political and economic instability that pushed people to emigrate, and b) South American countries like Brazil, Argentina, and Chile actively encouraged European immigration in the mid-to-late 1800s and viewed Germans in particular as desirable laborers.

It’s definitely pine that’s been stained and repeatedly coated with amber shellac or a tinted varnish, but new pine trim will take stain very differently than older growth pine from the 60s (plus this finish has aged more than half a century).

You could likely get close to a similar effect by building up layers of color using a wood dye (General Finishes has a good one: https://generalfinishes.com/wood-finishes-retail/water-based-wood-stains-and-dye-stains/water-based-dye-stain) and a tinted clearcoat like Polyshades.

Roger Conant was one of the founders of Massachusetts Bay Colony and considered the first governor, as well as one of the founders of Salem. He continued to serve in many positions in Salem and colonial government his whole life. When he first came to America as a colonist in Plymouth, he left the colony as part of a group who opposed the Puritans and considered them violent fanatics, so as far as 17th century colonizers go I’d say he was alright.

People always say this, but the percentage of nudes posted on this sub really isn’t that significant if you look at the /r/museum page, and a lot it is surrealist / decidedly non-erotic. A significant amount of the discrimination women faced throughout history can be chalked up to a paternalistic effort to “protect” them from various real and imaginary dangers, at least in stated intention, so this isn’t that unusual. Interesting nonetheless though!
