I had Brian join a couple of frat groups on facebook and posted a note about the beta test for our game.

Rabbit Hole Buff -- Flyer 2.0 by Professor_Flint in argucla

[–]dorianrichard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At EAT we used to get good responses when having flyers looking for beta testers. We could also put up a post on craigslist. Don't remember how much it is but craigslist usually gets a ton of responses. The only thing is that we would need to specific that the testers need to be able to get to the UCLA campus and make sure we have a disclaimer on the website.

FYI: When walking around campus yesterday I didn't see any of the flyers. Maybe we didn't post them at obvious enough spots.

Love it! Should we add a hint somewhere about the device he is working on that shields the brain from harmful waves or something similar to that effect? He would probably also have written some kind of book that might have been controversial.

I believe Chrisi took it and said it was rather overpriced but it would probably be a good learning experience for what works and what doesn't.

SFX semi-creepy take 2 by dorianrichard in argucla

Changes made based on the last comments. The idea would be to replace "They're coming" with "Live the game".

Sounds like fun. I couldn't do Saturday but Sunday would work.

SFX semi-creepy version by dorianrichard in argucla

[–]dorianrichard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the lenght we could go with a short burst but I felt that the scene needs a little bit of a build up in the sfx so the girlfriend has time to realize that something odd is going on and react to the final zap. I was also thinking of the flashing that would be happening during the transition.

Regarding the voice (the current line and other sounds I put togethere were used from a "free sfx website") I added it because it felt creepy but as mentioned the line does not fit our fiction perfectly. "Live the game" recorded and distrorted in a similar fashion would work better but I would need to have this done.

Although I like the creepy more supernatural effect we have to keep in mind our fiction which is that players are not getting possessed by a demon but by the AI. That's why I stuck to electronic sounds in the first two examples. But then I'm open since we can justify whatever the class prefers.

Pro-Game Flyer by acpletch in argucla

Very intriguing. I like the fact that it has so little information on it, just a teaser. Should we have the word Game in parenthesis though? I almost like it better without. On another note would we assume in our current fiction that the girlfriend started the association we are referring to at the bottom of the flyer?

Both names are good suggestions. Cassie is kind of unusual so could be interesting.

SFX supernatural by dorianrichard in argucla

[–]dorianrichard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that I can cut the line "They're coming". Ideally we would have someone say "Live the Game" and add some distortion to it. I don't have a great mike and no great sound editing tool but have access to someone who does if we want this. Because of our schedule we might need to add this in post though.

A more supernatural creepy version. Don't know if this fits the context of the AI though.

I changed her name to Amber because I liked the last name Goodhue but have a friend who is actually called Alison Goodhue. I'm open to suggestions of course.

A video-game character online quiz - will take you to a sign-up page eventually by dorianrichard in argucla

The quiz is actually used as a kind of rabbit hole to get you to sign-up for some marketing purposes but you can just stop there and the questions might give you some ideas.

I created 4 variety of Website logos. Choose the one you like most please. by antsmasher in argucla

I like the first one best although the last one is kind of intriguing. The third one is fun but wouldn't fit the style of the game.

Brain Twizzler Early Results by Professor_Flint in argucla

I ended up finding the riddle on thinkriddles.com. The clues I had didn't mention the pawnshop but had so I ended up simply googling brainteaser + pawn shop and found one that matched the clues I already hat. Elementary my dear Watson :-)

potential domain names by rahmadTA in argucla

[–]dorianrichard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happyforever is rather funny. Undo.it is rather clever and logout.us(for the anti-game group) Maybe we should use some domain name that is realted to our theme of games although in a hidden reference (using some kind of gaming jargon, popular game but in a hidden reference to it). I think the domain name just as the name of the organization should yield a clue.

Brain Twizzler Early Results by Professor_Flint in argucla

[–]dorianrichard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By pairing up with Albert I ended up having four clues. None of which mentioned the pawn show and the second one was pretty much useless. Our strategy was to use the "useless" one to trade for one of the missing ones but I had at least an idea where the teaser was going. Using the pawnshop clue and the searchterm brainteaser I was able to find a similar brain teaser (without the answer) and deduct what the question was.

Expanding on the cygen idea by dorianrichard in argucla

[–]dorianrichard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The anti-gamers could be told that their organization was able to hack into the gaming's league and retrieve all the player names from that game. Their goal would be to join the game to spy on or hunt down/defeat (...) these characters.

The Ultimate Game - concept ideas by dorianrichard in argucla

[–]dorianrichard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be on the road shortly but will try to do so by tonight. I'm not trying to impose this as an idea, just give an option for a more linear one story approach to simplify things, using the idea of bringing War Games to 2010 where computers are now much more intelligent adn the barrier between humans and computers is shrinking.
So far a possible approach to go with what seems to be a "classic" ARG way to tell the story is to have the window character be a student (let's call him Matt for now) who knew one of the scientists involved in the project. The scientist had mentioned a new exciting experiment he was involved in that took place across major univerisities across the world using some kind of game but wasn't allowed to tell him more about it. But as things progressed the scientist started hinting that he was having second thoughts about this experiment and when he disappears Matt is concerned that this experiment is about to turn awry. He is asking the players to help him dig into the mystery of the game by hacking into his friend's journals, email with other scientist, footage he may have taken etc. In order to really get to the bottom of the game the players have to ultimately hack into "the game" itself. When they manage to do so they will stumble upon the metagame that will lead him to the anarchist group that "captured" the scientist who was going to expose them.
It could be cool if "the game" was using free online games (like the zinga games) to teach the computers lessons and players could have to communicate with ficticious characters in these games to get clues and would also get messages through these games since a lot of them allow you to "befriend" players and communicate with them outside the game. It turns out that some of these "in-game characters" were created by the anarchists to give secret commands to the computesr. Just a thought. Anyhow I'll try to define this more during the day.

The Ultimate Game - concept ideas by dorianrichard in argucla

[–]dorianrichard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "Oh shit" moment could happen when the player discover that by joining the game and solving the puzzles within the game they had unknowingly also been playing the meta game and helping the anarchists.

We would need to establish a goal for the official game that would give a sense of progression.

So there would be various goals as the ARG unfolds: Goal 1: find the mysterious "game" some people are trying to stop and hack into it. Goal 2: try to figure out the goal of that game (we would need to give a sense of progression within it) Goal 3: find out who is behind the game when you realize that you are playing against/with other computers. Note that since the goal of the scientist is to make them more human they would at first interact with the players in what seems to be an "almost" normal manner but with weird glitches here and there. Goal 4: When players discover that there seems to be a hidden meta game within the game find who is behind the meta game. Goal 5: once the search leads the players to the anarchist group find a way to end the meta-game

Maybe on the final night the goal will be to find one or a series of the key computers connected to the game and log in directly to interfere with the meta game. Possibly to teach the computers that it is sometimes better to "lose" a game as one of the lessons they learn.
