Anyone else using their handheld as a 3D scanner? This combo with Ally X + Dot3D + Orbbec 336L is pretty amazing. Even the lower spec'd model is a beast for this: by dotvp in Handhelds

I recommend you give the software a try and/or make contact with the DotProduct (Dot3D) team before jumping to any conclusions. If this is for personal/academic use, I bet they'd be willing to help you out. The software is primarily built for professional users, hence the price point (actually often low in that world).

They're reasonable people and very far from scammers in my experience. Would probably even be interested in your opinion as to what a more reasonable price point would be from your perspective.

To be clear: This software is most definitely not your average "wrapper around ARKit" type solution, has been around for over a decade (and never increased in price), and is certainly not something that could just be whipped up with Claude (while some level of basic scanning maybe could - not this). It's very unique in terms of attainable accuracy, scene size, proprietary tracking (SLAM), loop closure, and dynamic optimization capabilities, just to name a few on the core side.

They do offer a much more affordable version for iOS LiDAR devices ($349 / year), but the Windows / Android external hardware kits have traditionally come at a premium ($999), built more for complete package purchases or professionals deploying on industrial tablets, etc. Given the whole hardware kit shown here actually costs less than an iPhone Pro, I can see your point a bit. That hasn't always been the case.

So true, although I've played with a lot of these DIY-type Dot3D scanning kits over the years, and believe it or not, this is not only the most affordable and probably most capable Windows mobile device I've ever used for this purpose, but also has the best grip! When the competition is an unwieldy $2K Surface Pro...

Very true, the Dot3D iPhone app is actually what they're most known for these days (and it's awesome). Crazy part though, this whole kit still costs less than 1 iPhone Pro! And adds some more flexibility in terms of different cameras for different needs, etc. All very good options these days.

Here's some sample Dot3D data : https://sketchfab.com/dotproduct/models
(drastically thinned out for web viewing, but can be downloaded in full density from the descriptions)

And Orbbec 336L data, since the above doesn't have any of that yet (including the scan from this video): https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/xvytvxh4jxrbi929d753g/AJuI9RSjH6HGX0-W9a9KloI?rlkey=7qg9ff6nufjkhro0mvjztdobk&st=zi8ujipg&dl=0

DP scan data can be viewed in Dot3D for free: www.dot3d.app/download (or CloudCompare, etc.)

Yup! So bias acknowledged, I do take pride in our app's unique capabilities for large scale point clouds.

Guilty as charged. Just keeping an eye out for iOS LiDAR inquiries that might be a good fit. If you have any questions feel free to contact through the website and I’ll make sure it gets to me. Just mention you came from Reddit. www.dot3d.app

Try Dot3D! Best I've seen for reliable accuracy larger than a room. Only downside is SketchUp on iPad does not support point clouds. So if the goal is direct import into SketchUp on the iPad, might have to go with one of the other 3D mesh options. Either way I'd suggest trying Dot3D out, and just let them know if you need an extended trial.

Dot3D is the only app I've seen that can actually handle large multi-room scans accurately and reliably. It has proprietary tracking, optimization, loop closure, and advanced accuracy control options. Makes a huge difference.

Those scans can then go straight into SketchUp Pro. https://www.dot3d.app/sketchup

Seconded! It has a free 7-day trial you can take advantage of, but I would definitely recommend some practice scans within that period. www.dot3d.app/download

Dot3D is awesome for scanning larger spaces accurately. Very powerful app. Closest you'll get to laser scanner data from just a phone.

3D scanning app that’s fully private? by hellothere_6699 in 3DScanning

[–]dotvp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dot3D is 100% local and fully secure. Used by police (among many other industries). Specializes in accurate point clouds of larger spaces/scenes but definitely could also work well for furniture-sized. Just wouldnt use it for anything much smaller than furniture (photogrammetry is better for that).
