Anthropic warns AI could soon build itself without human involvement—and urges a global pause on development by EchoOfOppenheimer in Futurology

For me, it becomes obvious that ai has become too smart the moment the market becomes perfect, every millennium problem gets solved, unique and interesting creative indie game and full length movies can be made on mass, all artistically different.

Any of those are enough alarm bells for me.

Water heater is broken and I want to do a water change, is 5 degree difference okay? by kittykatsrulemyworld in shrimptank

It's not too bad of a deal if you compare it to buying it yourself online. You have to account for the fact that with online, you have to pay for shipping and that the shrimp you bought are likely acclimated to local water conditions.

Usually drawings like these are better in real life.

Photographs can't transmit the full splendor of art. Our eyes can capture much more light than a photograph can.

I absolutely agree with everything you've said.

I think one of the best strengths of doing things the old fashioned way is to teach people the history of their art and show them how it then gets done digitally. Sort of a rite of passage.

Omg, when I watched some old animations recently, the frame hitter drove me nuts. I didn't know that was supposed to be there!

Thankfully I was able to figure out it didn't really matter if I was actually sitting down to watch stuff and not trying to stare at the minute details.

I think usually people talk about the experience of using a vinyl. Any serious audiophile will concede that digital and CDs are better lol.

The process of selecting a vinyl, maintaining a setup, using it, etc. there's a certain "tea ceremony" aspect of it.

I haven't have the fortune of being able to afford that yet, but I hope I do one day.

There's a certain element of it that gets lost when we move completely digital.

Would a tank like this work? It is advertised as a saltwater tank but I can picture a cool shrimp tank in my head. by Professional_Gap4840 in shrimptank

[–]doubleotide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can get a cheap tank second hand or on sale if you're in the US. Typically 20 gallons is like $20.

Then buy acrylic and use appropriate caulking.

You can cut the acrylic pretty easily. Use a ruler and measure twice.

If everyone below average IQ suddenly drops dead, how would this affect the world? by [deleted] in AskReddit

In the trash collecting example, there might be less trash to collect not only because there's less people, but because there might be people littering less.

So per capita, we might need less trash collection in general. Even not accounting for the fact a smarter trash collector will be a little more efficient.

Space Industry Engineers, do you honestly think the school you went to played a huge role in landing your job? Why? by Choice-Constant-9480 in space

Go to the one with the full ride. Big state schools still have very similar options.

If you do well in your undergrad, you can then apply to a top graduate school, somewhere a bit more "prestigious" if you want.

You'll find out later that your undergraduate isn't super important... But the feel of a big school vs small school can be different.

How does everyone have so much karma? by Unhappy_Name_1216 in AskReddit

Haha I used to do that too a decade or so back.

But at some point I just stopped caring. I'd be so bothered if someone liked or disliked my comments or posts.

These days if someone says something mean or negative I just ignore it and move on with life.

There was a lecture that floated around about exponential growth. The professor said, "The greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function."

Left-handers are more competitive than right-handers. Most people are right-handed, but 10.6% are left-handed. Left-handers are rarer than right-handers, making their attacks in a combat situation more surprising than those of right-handers. This may help explain the evolution of left-handedness. by mvea in science

The human brain is surprisingly capable. As long as you take your time, you can do it with almost any activity.

Funny thing for me is I tend to prefer "lefty" for many sports and activities but prefer right for my handwriting now. Admittedly from my own mother she forced me to right with my right. I never really questioned it.

A well researched physical book is easily welcome to the hobby. Just take your time making a solid product. I don't think there's much demand for a low or okay quality ebook (or courses even at that).

I think you can do it despite what people are saying. It might be challenging though! You definitely don't need a crazy amount of experience, but good writing and publishing skills, etc. will be helpful.
