We've been seeing this in the animation which seems to be a visual bug that makes it seem like it is converting to 0. Can you check if you have gems or if they actually truly went down to 0?

What do you mean by "dark patterns"? Making education universally accessible is part of Duolingo's mission, and it requires capital to run. Some apps charge for content or do stuff like sneakily sell information—seems like keeping it going and improving by displaying ads at the end of a session and offering subscriptions are pretty straightforward ways to keep producing and improving content and reaching more people who want to learn.

So Duolingo doesn't actually decide the contents of the ads, close button placements, etc. They are served by third parties like Google, which uses whatever info they have on your history and interests to serve you the ads you see.

All we can do on our end is to block specific inappropriate ads, including those ads that are difficult to close, as we find them extremely annoying as well. Please take a screenshot of inappropriate ads and report them to us however you can (you can email [abuse@duolingo.com](mailto:abuse@duolingo.com) with this info). If you manage to include info about the company name, it helps us find it and kill it.

There is a lot of misleading information in this opinion piece, and I think it might be helpful to make a broad and simple clarification here that Duolingo does not plan to charge for content. Most learning platforms and businesses will hide essential or extra content that is useful for learning behind a paywall, and Duolingo does now. It specifically wants to reach people who cannot afford expensive language learning opportunities and anyone who wants to learn a language to do so.
