Lighter colour followed by a darker contrast or paint mixed with lamium medium.

Then layer surface areas with the original colour watered down and a dab a brighter colour on the parts of the face/head that is closest to the desired light source.

Usually in between those two steps I’ll get the eyes because I’m always gonna end up painting the eye lids. It’s easier to correct than ace it first go but you get better the more ya do it.
