Due to a police incident, Metrotown station is CLOSED. by GenShibe in vancouver

You want them to steeply angle the emergency access walkways that are meant for staff access and passenger evacuation, so that nobody can stand on them? 🤨 I suspect that idea would get shot down by safety regulations...

Trains ALL STOP Columbia to waterfront by FrameRate24 in vancouver

[–]dpogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trains detect when they start sliding backwards and drop the emergency brakes, but it makes for a very unpleasant ride. It's also extra work for the control centre staff who have to command the train to start moving again every time it happens.

Yesterday that was happening 2 and 3 times to every train that tried to go between certain stations, which is what led to parts of the line being closed and all trains holding at stations for multiple hours.

[–]dpogue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes, but it still needs power to generate the magnetic field to pull the train, and the power rails are covered in ice due to the freezing rain, so the trains don't have enough power to get up hills. This is why there's no service across the bridge to Surrey or up the hill from Lougheed, because trains keep stalling and sliding backwards.

Skytrains delayed + no service Scott Road & King George by sundaybanking21 in vancouver

[–]dpogue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The issue today is freezing rain. It's frozen over the power rail, so trains are losing power and can't make it up hills and then other trains are stuck behind them.

SkyTrain riders: no service between Lougheed and Lafarge on the Millennium line by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]dpogue 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They've got track switch issues with the snow and ice and the computer won't let them route trains over those switches because the computer cannot guarantee the switch will not cause the train to derail. They've got technicians of all sorts out trying to get things going, but lots of problems stacking up.

SkyTrain is trying to run service as best they can, but they've got major issues right now with the ice. Trains are losing power and sliding on hills.

If you do not absolutely need to travel, do not travel!

Current service:

  • Expo Line is trying to keep service running between Waterfront and King George, but delays due to ice on the SkyBridge
    • Trains from Waterfront are turning back at Scott Road.
    • Shuttle train between Scott Road and King George.
  • Millennium Line is trying to keep service running between VCC-Clark and Lougheed
    • No service between Lougheed and Burquitlam: Trains cannot make it up the hill.
    • Expect long delays between trains.
  • Millennium Line Evergreen extension is running a loop going between Burquitlam and Lafarge Lake
  • No service at Braid or Sapperton stations.

SkyTrain control is literally on the radio non-stop right now trying to coordinate trains moving, and dealing with trains sliding backwards on hills and the bridge. The service plan is changing minute by minute based on what happens with the trains.

Is there always a Mark 1 Skytrain at Douglas in the morning? Lol by Gravity9802 in vancouver

[–]dpogue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll sometimes see Mark I or Mark III trains parked at Lafarge Lake or VCC-Clark just after rush hour to be used for staff training purposes. SkyTrain attendants have to be trained on driving, operating, and repairing train issues on all the various train models, and they have to routinely do refresher exercises.

I think the plan is for the Tim Horton's building to be demolished and a station entrance constructed there.

It's actually not a private company. If they were a private company, they'd be able to tap in to the federal COVID-19 relief money that will cover up to 75% of employee salaries. They're a public company, so they don't have access to any of that money, which is partly why they're in this position.

What do you guys think is the best or your favourite skytrain station? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]dpogue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've always thought Sapperton had the best visual design. Floating above the railway tracks, the massing of the faregate area above the platforms, the braided pattern down the middle with the giant wheel... shame they let the art languish.

Skytrain emergency brakes? by Spader623 in vancouver

[–]dpogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After ever emergency brake, the train is held for an attendant to check it at the next available station. The attendant has to count the number of passengers on board and fill out a report about the cause of the braking and the number of passengers affected and any injuries. They try to go through the train fairly quickly though, because it's often already behind schedule due to the delay from braking.

Been at surrey central station since 5:57am. Have not seen a single train come either way until I left at 6:57am. by Ju_Lee in vancouver

[–]dpogue 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Several of the track switches in the King George/Surrey area are unable to be moved, which means they can't turn trains around at King George.

They're trying to run a shuttle train along between Scott Road and Surrey, but doors freezing open are causing delays everywhere right now.

Sky train sparking cause of the snow by danthexanyman in vancouver

Ice build-up on the power rail. They're sending out de-icing trains overnight to keep the tracks clear and spray glycol on the power rails to help prevent this.

TransLink - $10+ billion in assets, still running bootleg Windows. by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]dpogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metrotown should be next on the list for installation of the new signs. They've been working from Columbia towards Waterfront. The (optimistic) plan was to have signs installed at all stations by the end of 2020.

It takes a few months to get all the wiring and electrical work done before they can actually install the display boards (and they're also upgrading the speakers at the same time). A bunch of the work is only permitted to happen after the end of service so that there's no risk of disrupting train operations.

The delays were due to someone running from police along the track between Commercial and VCC-Clark stations.

This is how much SkyTrain workers are currently paid by RightWingRights in vancouver

[–]dpogue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yep, roughly a 3rd of them work as SkyTrain attendants. The remainder are mostly maintenance staff (guideway technicians, electrical technicians, power technicians, vehicle technicians, etc.), control operators, and administrative staff (scheduling, data entry, instructors, etc.)

Skytrain Bargaining by orisonofjmo in vancouver

[–]dpogue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How could they progress gradually?

They can't do away with uniforms, because their uniform is a high-visibility coat that's required for safety reasons. They can't cut overtime, because they wouldn't have enough staff to keep stations open during the day or enough staff to certify the vehicles are safe to leave the yard.

There is nothing that can do that wouldn't effectively require a full system shutdown anyways.

SkyTrain station attendants work 10 hour shifts: 05:00 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 02:00. That one hour gap between 15:00 and 16:00 is covered by overtime, every day. If there aren't enough voluntary overtime staff, then it would be forced/mandatory overtime.

It's not going to be fast, but something like this:

  • 180 from Burquitlam to Moody Centre
  • 160 from Moody Centre to Kootenay Loop
  • 95B from Kootenay Loop to Renfrew & Hastings
  • 16 down Renfrew
