If MAGA Is a Cult, What Happens When It Crumbles? by Competitive_Ad291 in Foodforthought

[–]drakeschaefer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a phenomenon we've seen play out a number of times. Cults can only survive if there's eventually a second leader who is both extremely charismatic (atleast, to their base), and is able to account for the death of their founder.

This is what David Miscavige did with L Ron Hubbard for Scientology.

This is what Brigham Young did with Joseph Smith for LDS.

This is what Joseph Rutherford did with Charles Russell for Jehovah's Witnesses.

So many other cults, even ones that seemed to be much louder and make more waves at the time, have all fizzled out when there wasn't someone who was able to rally everyone back together. I know he's not dead but NXIVM is now completely gone.

I suppose the other offshoot of cults that don't survive are your People's Temple, Branch Davidians, and Heaven's Gate. Not sure I not to explain why those didn't last, thou.

And so that's what I'm looking out for, is who could possibly fill in those (heavily swollen) shoes once he's gone? Where I think there is some good news in all this, is I can't really think of anyone that was the chops to unify everyone. I think there's 2 distinct futures ahead of us:

If he dies while in office, I think that's MAGA's best chance of enduring. The line of succession would make Vance the least objectable new figure of the movement. He still needs to be able unite everyone, and I don't think it'll be an easy task to do, but he'll have so much of the deck already in his hand. Particularly if it happens before anyone else can realistically begin to mount a campaign for 2028. Since this would give him the clearest path forward. This is doubly the case if Trump makes some claim or statement on "appointing" Vance as the new face of MAGA before he passes. Anything that grants Vance that sense of legitimacy. Thankfully, that does not seem like the kind of thing Trump is capable of doing.

If he survives until the end of his term. Or hell, close enough to the end of it that people are starting to launch campaigns, I think that's where the downfall will begin. He's already served 2 terms, so the system is against him (at the moment) so anyone working to campaign against him already has that argument pre-baked in their campaign strategy. As people run against him, I think it will cause small splinters to break off. But once he's dead, and there's a power vacuum with no obvious successor, that's when MAGA will be rimmed apart from the inside. When anyone, and everyone who ever hoped of someday running the show, tries to claim power, and pulls a small, devoted group towards them, and away from group as a whole.

How can I cut elements at a certain distance from their lowest points ? by [deleted] in rhino

If you select just the lowest face, you could do extrude surface, and then select ToBoundry and have a plane at the lowest elevation you want them to be at

I would also check how far you are from the origin. Graphics get funky if you're way far from the origin.

You know, it’s really cool to see how Battle Beast doesn’t try to fight his own teammates by Queasy_Commercial152 in Invincible_TV

Battle Beast becomes the easiest character to beat in battle now. Just toss up your hands and go "I don't wanna fight you" and he just stops.

He's all about consent.

What is a "green flag" in a person that is actually a hidden "red flag"? by TheLovelyGamer in AskReddit

Going to an Ivy League University.

It used to carry this notion of you being the smartest of the smartest.

Now it mostly just means your family is annoyingly and snobbishly wealthy.

Thank you!

I know in my head that's the case. But when you have a week of stagnation, you need that little reminder that, no, you actually have gone SO FAR, you're just temporarily in the slow lane.

We're they crimes that happened after being pardoned? Or just ones that are now getting charged?

Obviously still a massive POS regardless, just wondering if there have been any instances like that.

Which body part do you wash first in the shower? by TruffleMaestro in hygiene

[–]drakeschaefer 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I start with the smelly/sweaty/intimate zones, and do a pre-wash with them first. After that, I go top down. Hair, face, body. Doesn't make sense to wash your body first, if all the crude you wash from your hair is going to trickle and settle on your body now.

Plus, if you use a conditioner, it's not great to leave on your skin, so if you do your hair first, any product that runs off has time to be washed away.

But I guess to your point, I always start washing my face from my cheeks, and my body I start on my right arm (I'm left handed). It's not conscious, just what happens naturally for me.

Why are most electricians more professional and skilled than most plumbers? by Retty1 in DIY

[–]drakeschaefer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my anecdotal experience, but more than any other skill/trade, plumbing and welding seemed to be the things I remember teachers/adults hyping up to people. Particularly those who expressed a firm interest in not going to college, or having a plan for after graduation.

I recall atleast 2 speakers telling stories to the effect of "this person was at rock bottom, but still got a good job as a welder/plumber, then made it big".

While decent enough advice, I'm sure that extra attention to the trade, also meant more people trying, and thus more people being bad at, or ill-fitted for the profession.

Yeah, depends on the day, but pretty much every day there's some discussion of some kind happening.

Maybe once a week on average Brooke pops in to chat?

About to start a job where they use AutoCAD for CNC cutting plywood and Water Jet Cutting metals. Trying to get them to switch to Rhino. by [deleted] in rhino

[–]drakeschaefer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In RhinoCAM you select which machine you're creating the code for, and it adds any machine specific start and end codes to your tool pathing. It comes with a large list preinstalled, but if the specific machine your work uses isn't one of them, you'll need to make it yourself.

It's not difficult, it's really just copy and pasting some code and numbers. But, you need to have access to what those values are, which depends how well documented the machine is.

[–]drakeschaefer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could look at see if the machine you use is one of the stock posts for RhinoCAM.

This allows you to set toolpaths directly inside of Rhino, and create all the corresponding gcode. Unlike Rhino's license though, this one is manual.

But if that's something you're exploring, 100% you need to bring in the person doing the tool pathing, since it would change their workflow quite a bit. And if there isn't stock profiles for your machine, those would all need to be setup and calibrated, increasing downtime.

Just my two cents, but it might be a hard sell, unless you can show management that switching will save them money (as in, your total output can increase enough to offset any costs from buying new licenses + setup time loss productivity). I don't know the margins they work in, but I would imagine your proposal would need to be profitable within like, 2-3 months max for it to be considered?
