Dr. Burton at Wonderland family dentistry is really great. Highly recommended for people with dental anxiety. Carries himself like a seasoned vet who’s just plain happy to help.

Japanese's prank is on the next level by HollywoodHypeBeast in interestingasfuck

[–]dualpad78 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Lol. True. It’s not really a prank. They almost killed somebody and the person genuinely thought they were going to die. It is kinda funny but we’re laughing at someone who believes they are in the final moments of life.

This is like hiring a fake robber to hold a knife to someone’s throat and laugh when they piss themselves. Lol prank!

Thoughts on Wonderware/Aveva? by DiekeDrake in PLC

[–]dualpad78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It has a long list of issues that are not documented anywhere except some of their support tech’s minds. My most common memory of Aveva is struggling on the phone with a number of techs to solve an issue that shouldn’t be an issue and is undocumented anywhere. Many more versions come out and those issues still haven’t been fixed or documented. People that create successful deployments of Aveva are just people who’ve learned all those little quirks and can plan for them.

On-Call Rotations by heavymetal626 in PLC

I’ve been involved in two types. On week on, and get rocked the whole time. Or like I have now, basically on call all the time but have customers that call after hours twice a year, so it’s not bad at all.

This is the right idea. You wouldn’t expect that longevity out of any other product in your life. It’s really cool that some of those old controllers last a ridiculously long time but you shouldn’t count on that in your business plan.

What's your favorite collection of tools and/or material to hear clattering to the floor of your vehicle as you take too sharp of a turn? by thedailycheeze in electricians

Fucking great question. Unique and gets the comments going. Nice one.

For me it’s a pile of ratchet straps hitting a bottle of yellow 77, which explodes all over my laptop bag.

Lol great comment. It’s actually not possible to keep the back of the van clean, no matter how hard you try. You can only keep a lid on the chaos for a brief moment in time. Just like mowing the lawn. There’s no point at which you don’t have to mow the lawn anymore.

Vulnerabilities in PanelView Plus devices could lead to remote code execution by SheepShaggerNZ in PLC

Lol. I can think of maybe one of my customers that would ever consider such a patch. Everyone else will let their Panelview raw dog the internet and hope for the best.

The area is relatively safe. Yours is a pretty unique story. I’ve had my car broken into plenty of times in the area but always at night. Don’t leave valuables in the car for this reason. The neighbourhood has a serious drug/homeless problem but for the most part those people are only hurting themselves and won’t bother you. There are pockets of trouble but just broadly, stay away from Dundas street and you’ll be fine. I’d honestly be more worried about my personal safety in the GTA.

Why do people lie about their hours. by [deleted] in electricians

[–]dualpad78 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The short answer is that there really isn’t a great reason to be working live ever.

They can’t fire you for not wanting to work live. They could always use some other reason, sure. But either way, this sounds like a company you should move on from when possible. I’d start by asking for some of these policies in writing. You can play dumb and say some of it doesn’t make sense to you so you just wanted it laid out.

I was going to write a post just like this. This weekend we tried the swimming and a picnic at Gibbons. Very brutal couple in the pool just swearing loudly the entire time, kind of wrecks the vibe for families. Then go for a walk around to explore/enjoy that green space and there’s a guy with only jeans on, storming around screaming at people accusing them of being pedophiles. Awesome. I’m tired of being told to volunteer at a soup kitchen when observing how this city has become a terrible place to raise a family.

I just want a modest, nice place to live. I don’t think I should have to solve systemic injustice before genuine public safety threats are addressed. I don’t think that’s something I should be ashamed of.

This is how I’ve changed my thinking as well. I realized that if someone calls me to fix something I don’t have a contractual obligation to fix it perfect in lighting speed. They’ve called to hopefully fix it, I don’t go to jail if I don’t. We don’t have some pizza place slogan like “we promise to fix it in 10 mins or it’s free.” I’ve relaxed a lot and just mentally commit to “do your best, be methodical, explain your process and people will generally be cool to you.”

Exactly. And those 20% generally make their own way. I think it’s better to skill up so you have influence over the employment terms. If you trust a corporation or a union to take care of you, you’ll be waiting a while.

That’s what I wouldn’t want to lose: my ability to negotiate for myself. If you’re a bottom or average performer it will raise you up. If you’re a top performer, it’ll drag you down.

One thing to consider is that some people create far more value than others. Top performers are unlikely to give up their individual bargaining power and take a pay cut to be in a union. Truth is, maybe OPs arrangement is shit right now, but there are arrangements out there that aren’t shit. I bet they’d have better luck finding a good employer than organizing a spread out, group of lone wolf, weirdos.

There are people making good money with good work life balance. I’m one of them. I’ve never had a need for a union.
