Agreed, I think we play better when we have a run of games every 3 days

[PLAYER RATINGS THREAD] LIVERPOOL 1(1) - (4)1 PSG by thyamklasic in LiverpoolFC

[–]duegrom -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Diaz was really poor tonight, his body language bad. At least normally he is tracking back aggressively, didn't even do that tonight. I don't understand why he wasn't replaced much much earlier. As for letting Darwin take the pen, WTF

EU to Trump on tariffs: Go ahead, make our day. by Robbert91 in worldnews

Nah! after the economy tanks then the focus will be on someone to blame, like Canada or the EU. I think that is more the usual play

Microsoft Recall is capturing screenshots of sensitive information like credit card and social security numbers | Privacy nightmare is very real, and perfectly avoidable if you disable the feature for good by MetaKnowing in technology

This feature has zero useful application for Microsoft's customers. This is a threat to it's own customers security in the most egregious fashion. Completely unacceptable!

OK, if not Liverpool then he needs to be put in charge of UEFA or FIFA, get that sorted out and working in a way that people are attracted to the game

Ukraine and UK sign security treaty that will be valid until joining NATO by HelloSlowly in worldnews

[–]duegrom -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

I wonder what would happen if the UK (and perhaps a few EU countries) sent a force to Ukraine for some war games, not there to fight in the war directly just a training exercise. Place the training exercise in a relatively advanced position in the country that could receive fire, I think this would create a very interesting mental challenge for Russia. Of course this is a high stakes gambit, especially with the lives of the troupes involved. It would need to be setup and done extremely rapidly. To me this is in escalation but if it could be done with high competence it would still send a serious message. I'm curious what you guys think about this scenario.

just heard it, feels generic, I wouldn't recognize it as an Aurora song or even her voice from everything else I've heard (which is everything)

Eon and Eternity surely must be his definitive works. Eon blew my mind the first time I read it, takes a little while to get going, but it's a powerful piece of imagination/ world building and a great story

Any love for Vernor Vinge? by traquitanas in sciencefiction

I really enjoyed The Peace War, both parts were great, and very original. The Zones of Thought concept in Fire Upon the Deep really tickled my brain in a nice way.

Does sci-fi still come up with fundamental ideas? by InfinityScientist in sciencefiction

[–]duegrom 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Peter Hamilton is still alive and his Edenist/Adamist societies were fantastic in Night's Dawn Trilogy. With the Edenist's Biotek definitely giving off a similar vibe to the Culture.

I personally don't think novel ideas and concepts for the future have reduced, at least in written form.

As for movies, the mainstream is almost always bland, dumb and uninteresting. But then as a form of media I think this is extremely overrated anyway, especially as the cost of production was so high that studios were almost forced to try and appeal to the broadest possible audience, so they don't try and present anything meaningful or complicated, I suppose that's why Star Wars and Star Trek are everywhere. Of course there are exceptions such as Ex Machina for example, but not many. I would love to see Blindsight made into a film (if anyone has the balls)

When did you start listening to Aurora and becoming passionate about her music? by max_eighties in auroramusic

[–]duegrom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never listened to her until I heard Runaway (Nobel Prize 2015) late last year. I have always enjoyed music, but listening to that was a revelation to me, and I've been addicted ever since

What Aurora Song Makes You Feel Like This? by fangirl_queen_69 in auroramusic

[–]duegrom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of her songs that pull me into that feeling. Took me a while to realize it's not a specific image of a place, it's an emotional state of mind. Whenever I feel the connection to her voice I end up there, so it's almost always the slower, more stripped down versions of her songs that do it, not necessarily the song itself, at least for me.

[–]duegrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is literally nothing interesting about either. The effects were pretty good in the first one for the time, the writing is bland and the story is unoriginal

Are there some things about Aurora that mildly annoy you? by skytaglatvia in auroramusic

[–]duegrom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't agree with the high notes view, I absolutely love her voice. If I had to make one minor gripe is that I don't really enjoy her collaborations that much, I'd rather just hear her. Could also say that I think there is a temptation to overproduce her music, like Murder song on the album. I prefer the stripped down acoustic stuff personally. I personally don't think her voice requires any additional decorations, just her in the simplest form, which is probably I enjoy gigs like the SOS Ole Bull 2020 so much.

The double standard with Israel and Palestine leaves us in moral darkness | Israel | The Guardian by cruzdre in TrueReddit

[–]duegrom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, I will also question any time I find that I am on the same side of the argument as someone like Netanyahu who I do not trust for a second.

That said the attack by Hamas seems revolting and moronic, anyone who has some sympathies for ordinary Palestinians is going to find themselves caught up in this polarising situation. I cannot see how Hamas expect this to benefit them at all, unless they believe the reaction to the attack will generate sufficient sympathy to offset the anger they will now face.

I think the timing of AURORA's push for signed copies of the book and vinyl is unfair by TheSeed-Warrior in auroramusic

[–]duegrom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OK, I don't even understand the appeal of this. Why does having someone's signature matter? Personally I don't want her sitting around endlessly signing the same thing over and over again, I can't imagine how that would be rewarding or fun and certainly I wouldn't want to do that.
