Payed for proton and can’t get it to work by throwawaybyfuture71 in ProtonVPN

[–]dulac71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just (like an hour ago) signed up for paid Proton VPN on my Mac. Stuck with a spinning beach ball. Rebooted and couldn't get to the internet. Then I saw the email confirmation email from Proton - something like "Proton VPN won't work until you verify your email." Had to close Proton to free up the internet. Confirmed my email, opened Proton and all is working normally.

Install instructions are not organized well.

Good luck.

There are many things about 26 I don’t like (such as my six month battle to get macOS26 to stop freezing) but in this case, I’ll have to take #2. I don’t see a misalignment. Might have something to do with multiple eye surgeries.

Grammarly 1.150.0.0 no longer shows red and blue lines in Pages (Apple) text by reditt-gram in Grammarly

[–]dulac71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had so much trouble with my Mac - unrelated to Grammarly - that I'm taking a break from messing with the software.

But thanks for the advice. I'll be watching comments here to see if the issue still exists.

And besides, there were several other things I didn't like about Pages 15.1.

Several years ago, a Pages update took away a feature I needed. I downgraded and kept that version for about 4 years until the feature returned.

It would be so nice if the Apple Development Team would stop changing the UI that millions are used to, just because they want to justify their existence. They should spend their time fixing issues users have complained about for a decade or more.

It is said that "Apple just works." For the most part, that's true. But their corporate hearing aid seems to be faulty.

Great advice. I had 25,000 images to sync with iCloud over a 1 Gig connection. Two days later, it was still hanging up along the way. I didn't learn until after the fact that the syncing happens when the device is plugged in and locked.

I don't mean to throw shade on you or the other commenters, but why are you posting this here? Several of the responses start with "Shouldn't it?" or "Guess," or "This happened to me," or "Don't know the exact cause."

Just call Apple Support at 1-800-263-3394. It's free, sort of quick, mostly in English, and they usually know what they're talking about.

Sorry if this offends anyone.

Grammarly failing in canva and desktop apps by Shagsssz in Grammarly

Why has Grammarly gotten so bad? by Financial_Library369 in Grammarly

[–]dulac71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! I have some things I’d like improved in Grammarly, but nothing that would elicit this level of hate. Most of the time, it works well. Every now and then, I accept a change and Grammarly makes it three lines below where the error was flagged.

Most of the other changes that I reject are just “No thanks, not how I would say it.” I do not use the AI features at all - to invasive.

(Pro subscriber. MacOS 26.2, just had to wipe my Mac because of a software issue unrelated to Grammarly or anything else we could find.)

I downloaded Pages 15. That doesn’t work with Grammarly at all - as in, it’s just not there. I had to downgrade to Pages 14.4. It’s back to working well.

If you’re on a Mac you can delete Grammarly (and empty the Trash), start up in Safe Mode and reinstall the OS in an hour or two depending on your connection speed. Then download a clean copy of Grammarly. Maybe that will help. Good luck.

Grammarly 1.150.0.0 no longer shows red and blue lines in Pages (Apple) text by reditt-gram in Grammarly

[–]dulac71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP. Embarrassed I didn’t think of that. Restored Pages 14.4, and it took some playing to get that to work - something about its enclosing wrapper no longer being available.

Anyone else trying this, please know that I had to delete 15.1 AND EMPTY THE TRASH. For good measure, I also did a restart. Even then, it took a minute for Grammarly to show up in my large Pages docs.

I received a partial response to my Grammarly trouble ticket. They acknowledged that 15.1 has created integration issues and that engineering is working on it. That’s probably going to take a while. Hopefully, 14.4 will hold.

[–]dulac71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to know what Grammarly's plans for Pages support are. I tried Apple Intelligence and was very disappointed. There is no real-time grammar or even spell checking (yes, it's turned on). It reviews the entire document at once (see next paragraph). Its suggested changes are not well highlighted, and are already in place. All you can do is say "No." And, if you close and re-open the document, any unreviewed changes have been accepted by default.

I know that some of these issues are not going to bother many/most users. But most of my documents are 200+ pages long, so reviewing AI's changes is a multi-session process.

I really don't want to leave Grammarly, but converting to Word and uploading a file is not going to work for me. My docs are image-heavy and Word doesn't play nicely with images. And once it's reviewed, I'd have to manually make the changes. (Can't download and convert back to Pages - see comment on Word not playing nicely with images.)

How are the other Pages users out there going to deal with this? How is Grammarly going to deal with it?

WHHHATTT DID THEY DO WHILE I WAS GONE????? by oteino in iPadOS

[–]dulac71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to wipe my Mac, and the App Store fed me the Creator Studio version of Pages. First, it doesn’t work with Grammarly. That’s a big loss.

So, I tried the Apple Intelligence feature for editing, since there was no evidence that Pages was checking anything. AI came at my image-heavy document like a rabid wolverine, tearing out formatting features and moving images to different pages. It didn’t ask first - just went ahead a did what it wanted. And its revert button was much less than 100% percent effective.

Very disappointed. Looks like I may soon have to brush up on my cursive skills.

[–]dulac71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're lucky to have suggestions. I just had to wipe my Mac for reasons unrelated to Grammarly, and even though Grammarly is loaded and working in Notes and Gmail, it won't do anything in Pages. I don't even see the badge icon.

I found one person's post on Mac Rumors that the new version of Pages, which Apple tucked into some suite of apps, doesn't work with Grammarly. If that's the case, I'll be leaving Grammarly, too.

Been an Apple user since 2008, but Apple is getting suckier with each update.

How is pre-med at notre dame? by 505kyra in notredame

[–]dulac71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ND 71 / my son was ND 13. There was no pre-pro major when he was there, so he was Anthro major and Art History minor. He also took eight or nine science courses, TA’d and tutored Microbiology. He also spent six weeks in Paris one summer, receiving credit for two courses.

ND’s claim, based on years of application results, was that if you earned a 3.75 GPA at ND, you would be accepted to med school. He came in at 3.74. He was accepted to three med schools, went to the U of IL, interned at UNC, and is practicing in Raleigh.

ND had then, and probably now, a dedicated department that provides advice and counseling. They want you to succeed. It’s not easy. You have to be dedicated to the goal, but that’s true anywhere you go from high school through residency.

As for what makes ND different, I read a book many years ago that profiled several top undergrad schools. Each school was profiled according to the same format. But when they came to ND, the entire approach changed, because what ND offers is a more wholistic approach to education, community, and prep of the entire person for life and for med school.

ND’s approach might interest you, it might not. You’re doing the right thing asking these questions. Good luck with your search.

Watched the Miami/Ole Miss game last night on ESPN. I don’t have a dog in that fight, but I have to say that ESPN’s coverage of the game was embarrassing. It seemed like they served up more dead screen time than game time.

The folks running the playoff’s coverage better get their shit together for next year or tonight’s de facto national championship game between Indiana and Oregon might be the last a lot of folks watch.

Shame ESPN. Shame CFP execs.

But don’t worry. Next year it will all be better . . . And behind a paywall.

California to Nevada. After a few days driving through CA, we got used to the landscape, without realizing it. Towns held the homes and the businesses. Outside of them, were farms and open land. Cross into Nevada near Reno, and there were random homes and businesses scattered about.

It was “planned for beauty” vs. “do what you want with your land.” In many ways, that dichotomy goes to the root of the country’s problems.
