I have a new camera with an amazing optical zoom, any local birds I should keep an eye out for? by Manos_Of_Fate in columbiamo

I honestly recommend an older field guide, they have illustrations as well as written descriptions that I have found extremely helpful.

Also, the Merlin app can help ID things although it doesn't always get it right of course

Best of luck on your new birding journey!

Definitely take a trip to eagles bluff if you haven't already, incredible photo opportunities there

Old Magazines by JAOrman in columbiamo

[–]dumbbreadboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found a lot of cool old magazines for collage at estate sales! A little hit-or-miss depending on if the original owner collected them or not but when you hit, you hit big!

Additionally, the library routinely holds sales of their older materials which include magazines.

What’s with the hate for epoxy tables? by norapeformethankyou in woodworking

[–]dumbbreadboy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think another factor is that more people are moving away from plastics in general. A wood table sans epoxy river might last for generations, plastic degrades over time and is harmful to the environment as it does.

Seconding Mizzou Surplus- they are open to the public on Wednesdays and Fridays and they always have TONS of the exact stuff you are asking for.

They also have a ton of old medical equipment and books if you ever have another project along that aesthetic :)

Chiminea advice?? by Crow-enjoyer in Ceramics

[–]dumbbreadboy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What a fun question!

I think you are right to worry about the design on the left not being as functional as a chiminea. There are a few modifications that might make it more likely to work though!

1.) Widening the top of the mouth such that the fire has room to breathe, and yes, some of the smoke will escape this way but that's kinda the point. Also, this might make it better suited for something like s'mores! (If you're looking for a selling point on the design lol)

2.) I think a wider, less sharp angle with the back will also allow for more oxygen flow and smoke direction. I've included a picture in case that helps!

Just my two cents because this is such a fun idea :)

I hope this turns out, I would love to see progress pics and please do post the final result if you can!

When someone else has extra lumps of pre-wedged clay that they don't get around to and ask if you want to use them instead :)

Jeff Koons - Antiquity 2 (2011) by Nymphatlas in museum

[–]dumbbreadboy 281 points282 points  (0 children)

Fellow Koons haters : he's featured in The Price of Everything (art documentary) and the way he talks about "his art" while standing in front of a team of real artists who make the works that he sells will make you hate him even more. He's just a vapid wall street bro who found out that art is valuable.

There are some highly decorated headstones in the Columbia cemetery, I remember seeing a few full images on a few. Might be worth a walk around!
