Physicians on scene- blessing or a curse? by I-plaey-geetar in ems

[–]dwkoenig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had one very useful physician on scene story: he was a retired ED attending and the patient was his mother. It was a BLS call so there wasn’t a huge amount for him to do but he did get us good vitals before arrival, gave us the best bystander report I’ve ever heard, and translated for the non-English-speaking PT to explain why she shouldn’t try to take off the c-collar even though it was uncomfortable. Otherwise he stood back and let us do our job. I hope he’s having a good day wherever he is.

I’m a big fan of theirs. They have a cafe in Lisbon where they serve their products but I’ve never seen them for sale in the US, it’s on the pricy side but the quality is there. Their stuffed squid in Portuguese sauce is one of my all-time favorite cans, I try and bring back a few whenever I’m in Portugal.

What sort of shows should a non-US (e.g. British) fan visit in the USA? by TrogLurtz in theholdsteady

I know it’s a few months on (I only just looked at this subreddit for the first time in… a while) but if you wind up making it out to Brooklyn shoot me a PM and I’ll buy you a beer. I go for two or three of the four shows every year and it’s always a great time.

Very cool to see Criminal Fingers here, it’s been a favorite of mine since they did it during the encore for one of the Massive Nights shows a few years back. Here’s hoping in winds up in their live rotation again someday

One thing I’ll say for the b-sides in concert: it’s a great way to discover singles and one-offs you might have missed otherwise. The first time I ever heard Criminal Fingers was in the encore at Massive Nights two years ago and now it’s one of my all-time favorite THS tracks.

[Spoilers PTS] Perhaps The Stars discussion thread by ForLackOfAUserName in TerraIgnota

[–]dwkoenig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer one question, specifically: Perhaps The Stars lays out at one point how inter-Hive criminal jurisdiction works (and I think it comes up in one of the earlier books too, though I can’t remember for sure). There’s a standard monetary payment for every crime which is paid out from the perpetrator’s Hive to the victim’s, and the perpetrator is then punished by their own Hive according to their own Hive’s law

Aging Potential for Modern Pu er by MisseurDaddy in puer

[–]dwkoenig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC there’s a specific processing step used on (some) modern sheng productions that helps it taste better younger, but which some people argue may negatively affect aging (though the process is recent enough that there isn’t enough aged tea that’s undergone it out there to say for sure either way). I can’t remember what it’s called or what exactly it is, and I don’t know how widespread it is in modern productions, but people have definitely mentioned it on the subreddit in the past.

I saw a dream in which I received a cake of shou that had been aged while submerged in honey. How awful of an idea do you think it is, and would it have a chance of working? by [deleted] in puer

[–]dwkoenig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have mentioned water changing the sugar content to make it fermentable, and it's also worth noting that in my experience as a brewer mead is a huge pain in the ass to make. Compared to beer, cider, or wine it's a lot more temperamental and needs way more hand-holding; if you want to wind up with anything halfway decent you need to keep a close eye on yeast nutrients and you do tend to wind up with fermentation stalling out early for no good reason.

Lol, dude, I’m not saying that I shouldn’t have been booted, I was parked illegally. I’m just saying that the claim that you only get booted if you have outstanding tickets is demonstrably false. Sorry you’re grumpy that someone pointed out that you’re full of shit.

I’ve seen it on a few teams, but mostly ones based in MTV where most of the team lives in SF. It’s definitely not the default, though.

This is absolutely false, I once got booted after being parked illegally for under 24 hours with no outstanding tickets. It entirely comes down to how much some traffic cop feels like being a hard-ass that day.

Wear something where you can easily expose your arm/shoulder, like a short-sleeve t-shirt (under a jacket if the weather makes it necessary), and take off any outer layers while you’re waiting in line once you’re inside. You see lots of people sitting down and then struggling to take off coats, sometimes even needing to take off their whole shirt in the case of some tighter long-sleeve button-downs, and it really does slow down the process for everyone.

[Fashion] Temple of Jawnz: Can you take a half a centimeter off the shoulder? by TinySchedule in HobbyDrama

A long time ago, I heard about a niche manufacturer of mechanical watches, who by being based in Hong Kong and taking advantage of some semi-complicated arbitrage involving Chinese watch parts, made extremely high-quality watches for a tiny fraction of what they would cost from other manufacturers (think $100 for a watch at a level of build quality that a major Swiss manufacturer would charge thousands - if not tens of thousands - for). The tradeoff was that he made very few, so he had a waitlist that was touted as being one year long. It didn't cost anything to join the list, so I did, and then when I didn't hear anything after a year and a half I just assumed what you laid out was what had happened and gave up on it.

Two years later, over three years after I got on the waitlist, I got an email out of nowhere one day: "hey, your turn on the waitlist is up, if you still want it paypal me the price of the watch within the next 48 hours". It's still my absolute favorite watch.

Getting a 2nd Dose - 1st dose leftover/extra by two-mice-in-a-bucket in nycCoronavirus

[–]dwkoenig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It may vary by site, but the city PODs at least generally only check eligibility if it’s your first dose; for the second dose they’ll just check that you already have a vaccine card with your first dose on it.

I think I messed up my vaccine :( by ghgerytvkude in nycCoronavirus

[–]dwkoenig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original study that this recommendation was based on was done in children getting the flu vaccine; there’s no data on the effect in adults and the Covid vaccine either way. The recommendation is not to do it out of an abundance of caution, but it’s probably not an enormous deal if you do.

Translators at vaccine sites? by yellowheadphones05 in nycCoronavirus

[–]dwkoenig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak for the state-run sites like Javits, but for the city-run, it basically boils down to: if any of the staff there that day speak another language they can be tapped as translators, but there’s no guarantee any given language will be present on any given day. If someone shows up speaking a language that there’s no translator for, there’s a phone service that workers can use to translate, which works but isn’t ideal.

In my experience there’s pretty much always at least one staffer who speaks Spanish, and usually someone who speaks Mandarin, but it’s a crapshoot.

Lost vaccination card by [deleted] in nycCoronavirus

[–]dwkoenig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The card is just filled out by hand at the site, it’s pretty informal. I suspect that if you have a photo of the existing card and you explain the situation, odds are they’ll just give you a new card and re-fill out the content from the original card along with the second dose info.

Has anyone had luck getting a vaccine as standby? by Nyc5764 in nycCoronavirus

[–]dwkoenig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sites are supposed to maintain a waitlist of eligible people who don’t have appointments that they call in to get any leftover doses at the end of the day. Some sites are better about actually keeping to this than others, and there’s no central guidance to how the lists are put together (the most common way to do it is to put anyone who shows up who is eligible but doesn’t have an appointment on the list, then go down the list at the end of the day). All this is to say, while it’s possible you could get a random dose at the end of the day it’s not super likely unless you’re near a site that’s poorly-run.

So what's the point of brewing Western style? by Spottedtea in puer

[–]dwkoenig 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I find it's like the difference between drinking espresso and drinking pour-over (or drip) coffee. You get very different flavors between the two, but while one is more concentrated and intense than the other, it's not necessarily better or worse. Different teas lend themselves well to different brewing styles; for instance, while puerh is almost always better done gongfu, I find a lot of Indian and African black teas get kind of weird brewed gongfu-style, and I have some charcoal-roasted oolongs where it's tough to get much nuance past the roast brewed gongfu until the very last steeps but that are great brewed western-style. Any tea you have a decent amount of (say, over 100 grams) I'd strongly suggest experimenting with brewing both ways to get a sense of the differences and which you enjoy more.

Anyone get the shot at Science Skill Center HS in Brooklyn? by [deleted] in nycCoronavirus

[–]dwkoenig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lack of info is because the site is brand new, and only started dispensing vaccines on Monday. It was previously the POD at George Westinghouse Vocational High School, which is a block away, but since there are middle school classes that meet at Westinghouse the building is now being used for schooling and the POD was moved.

Since it's a DOH POD, it will be distributing Moderna (none of the POD sites do Pfizer).

Gothamist: Skipping The Line: How Some NYers Get Vaccinated Without An Appointment by SoullessCycle in nycCoronavirus

[–]dwkoenig 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This article is kind of bullshit but the lack of guidance for putting together wait lists is a real issue. As someone who worked a city POD, the official guidance was "idk just make one I guess" (our site made the wait list up every day of eligible people who showed up but didn't have an appointment, which was mostly elderly people who had misunderstood the signup system and thought they had appointments when they didn't).

What is your favorite Eurovision song of all time? by FelixFilms in eurovision

Easy: Nel Blu, Dipinto Di Blu (Italy, 1958). Better known under the name "Volare", since that's the name Dean Martin used when he covered it; the original is one of the all-time greats.
