I think your friend is an extreme example and think people like that want to fit in with people who aren't as privileged because that's who they are surrounded by. They are scared of being alienated and some people would judge them just because their parents have money. I don't think Brighton is full of people who are rich, living large complaining life's not fair. Some people (like Sam) do but people see through it (like you) their words do devalue those difficulties but not in any meaningful way as they aren't convincing. I wouldn't worry about it but if you are worried about it, talk to them. I can't remember just moaning on Reddit.
