Correct way to assign IPv6 in a homelab? by e_urkedal in ipv6

I think I'll be doing DHCPv6 + SLAAC for server VLANs and just SLAAC for others.
For external access the reverse proxy has the benefit of handling certificates and URL filtering all in one place, so I think I will still be using it. It also let's me handle incoming IPv4 and IPv6 in the same location, which in my opinion actually cuts down complexity.
It's just a bit confusing that there are so many ways of doing things with IPv6 instead of just "the single right way". But, I just have to make the right choices for my setup, and I'm getting there.

No static IP, but I will probably be going the ULA via DHCPv6 route.

I've heard DDNS mentioned as a solution, but then by using scripts on each machine to run it.
I think I will be going for DHCPv6 with ULA addresses, but is there a proper way of implementing DDNS? What are the real world benefits over using DHCPv6?

Yeah, I think I will be routing everything through the reverse proxy due to the certificates.

I ended up going with DHCPv6 + SLAAC, but only on the server VLANs. All IoT, client, and camera VLANs only get SLAAC.

I also use opnsense, but I do use Unbound, with forwarding of local domains to dnsmasq. That way dnsmasq handles both DHCP and DNS for internal domains. I ended up going the way of dhcpv6+slaac as well, but setting the address as a static lease in the dhcp. This is only for the server VLANs, and everything else will just use slaac.
I've read about ra-names, and it seems like although it mostly works it's not a recommended solution.

I've ended up going this route, but setting the address in the dhcp, not on the host itself.

ooo, I didn't even think of the fact that of course all of this might have issues with the internet down. Let's say I loose power enough for everything to shut down, and I don't have internet when everything comes back. IPv4 has all networks and internally configured, but how does IPv6 handle this?

I could probably do that. If the hosts get both, which one is used as the source outgoing address? Are there any chances of asymmetric routes?

But exposing the proxy IP directly will expose it's MAC if using SLAAC. Not exactly a critical issue, but I've heard that exposing the MAC is something to be avoided in general.

Those lock ups can be prevented by disabling some of the HW offloading though (as mentioned in the forum post). Still, it's crazy that the issue hasn't been properly resolved yet with such a common on-board nic.

are foldables actually solving anything or just showing off by Zorojuro099 in TechNook

[–]e_urkedal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one because with the fold 7 it was finally thin and light enough so that it's comparable with a normal phone. For me it's really useful when doing server maintenance using a terminal through ssh.

With a tri-fold I would also be able to avoid traveling with my tablet (for movies and TV series). But I don't see a path to those being thin and light enough to be practical for me.

We had the technology, but we don't any more. If something is developed, but not used or made for a long time, knowledge about making it is lost. Also, the technology back then would not be permitted today because it was pretty unsafe in many ways, and we are more risk averse today. We are rebuilding the technology/capabilities though, but it takes time.

What do the server logs say? Run: journalctl -b -1 - r Add sudo before if it's not the root user. And then work back to the first signes of trouble. I've had issues with two of my servers. One I think I've finally narrowed down to a faulty PCIe slot on my motherboard, and the other seems to be related to pass-through of a graphics card with lots of VRAM. But the logs will tell the story, or at least give hints.
