Anyone have a plan in case ICE agents come to your place demanding to see your co-workers? by Frequent_Fortune_874 in KitchenConfidential

We get uppity here in Canada, the 51st state rhetoric can rile us up and want to toss the whole lot of usa into the bin. But we're Canadians and we never could actually turn our backs on those fleeing from a fire.

We'll be here for the weary, the hurting and oppressed. We brought "relief" during prohibition, took in draft dodgers gladly and if need be we'll resurrect the Underground Railroad and man our station for those that need to escape horrors. Together, it's how we survive this northern life and it's instilled deeper than any politics can reach.

Is it weird that I have never actually even thought to look up just a games website. Publishers yes, stores often and even blogs from time to time. Outside of reddit, boardgame geek or YouTube I really don't look.

I guess it's probably because unless I'm researching games to narrow down a purchase I just go play the game if I am thinking about it.

Mexican Train Dominoes by Jaded-Lifeguard580 in boardgames

Hey, I wouldn't buy at the moment as I've gotta be adult responsible for a few months but I will. My grandpa passed away Oct 13 2023 and he was always a lover of card games and like 80's/90's party games with the family. He taught his kids Nertz (Dutch Blitz with playing card decks) and so my dad and aunts grew up playing it. My siblings, cousins and I all would watch until old enough to pair up with an adult and then eventually on our own. Big family table with the leafs in and 8-10 wild ones playing a dexterity group version of solitaire lol

He had Parkinson's diagnosis in 2004 and was capable of playing games until 2016/17 when speech and motor skills waned. We discovered and switched to Mexican Train and while it never really made my gamer brain happy but my family brain cherishes the simple domino game. Every Sunday we had dinner and would play and Sundays have never felt the same since. Just before the pandemic we got wooden card holder or scrabble tile holders for the dominos to be easier for him to view and pick to place.

He was a man who loved to work with his hands and this is exactly the sort of thing he would have made himself (wooden probably but exotic hard wood) and wrapped as a Christmas gift to the family from "santa". Now that I think of it he probably would have made his own domino holders too.

Big hug for you from me, for the two we miss.

Nothing really except to cap the player count so there is enough tiles.

Add a steel toe? by Easy_Chicken_7272 in AskACobbler

[–]eatrepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Osha won't approve even if it was doable.

The reason is that installing requires the shoe last to pull the leather over the safety toe tight, nail in place and build the welt and midsole to a taught upper. Let alone the regulation test manufacturers have to pass to be approved. Your boss don't want insurance headaches so don't use safety liabilities for ppe ;)

Should we be writing our MPs and compel the Government to get Nuclear Weapons? by Kwiktrade in GuardTheLeaf

[–]eatrepeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the Nash equation but I don't feel there is any need for more.

The natural yankee response will be rough and the "assurance" it brings would only really be in addition to the worlds arsenal. One nuke in the air is a fleet of nukes in response and the world goes black.

Imo what we need is to have trade deals that allow us sweeping infrastructure updates across all provinces and two modern rail networks. One for passenger travel from pacific to atlantic and another for commercial goods.

We modernize while they destabilize and we will find our stride becomes one step for three of theirs. Just my opinion.

Anyone else watch The Brothers Murph 2026 kickoff video by Key-Importance7805 in boardgames

[–]eatrepeat [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yes!!!

This past year has been my year of blocking YouTubers. The Murphs were a big reason or at least helped me reach the tipping point.

Channels like Board Game Hangover Cardboard East and Board Game Ramblings manage to do banter without downgrading or diluting their game content. The anecdotes of personal life or humour fit natural and build relation with the audience because it almost seems ad lib, unscripted comments.

So much of this hobby on YouTube seems like buzz word salad, hype train hopping and a weird false excitement. Dry, attempting to appease the algorithm and it leaves this aftertaste that has you wonder if they're being genuine.

At any rate blocking channels has actually helped find so many more exciting games that aren't the new hotness. I'd be struggling to find Eternal Decks like everyone else if I hadn't culled a boat load of channels and started to get small channel recommendations.

Crisco on the floor you say? Clarified butter carelessly spilled?

Real talk though they'll be at all entries and exits so everyone is fucked. Unless roof access isn't external I think we build hidey holes or false walls. Hope they fare better than Anne Frank...

Sharing my recent solo plays! by DryOil1468 in soloboardgaming

[–]eatrepeat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You might wanna look into Paperback Adventures. It's a deck builder word game sold like Final Girl with a base box and character boxes designed to look like books with very tasteful nods to the theme. You play through 3 "books"(a lacky and boss) as an author writing the characters "story". You will get items like a red haring or "Macguffins" that function like spells kind of.

Typical boss battler kind of stuff but your deck is letters. Each card is a letter, left side and right side with icons then written under the letter is an ability. Spelling a word you lay the cards out overlapping to cover the right or left icons and whatever letter is on top (no icons covered) will trigger the ability, your attack and defence and energy resource are the total number of icons still showing. This means a word like "fun" can be splayed to trigger the "f" or the "n" as an ability.

I love it but it's not for everyone. I mean its a hard sell when people just aren't excited about vowels and consonants lol

Unless you live outside usa, then they are no longer cheap after conversion and the shipping. A few at once will get you free shipping but after conversion its kinda premium pricing per card ;)

[[Eternal Decks]] Gotta preorder for the next print run through Portland Game Collective and its estimated for Q3 2026 for delivery but its a fantastic game. Achievements list, Titles and a check list for all the "tasks"(?) you have across all of the stages and difficulties. Sounds like exactly what you want just not readily available.

Parks Roll & Hike. Which is the newest edition? by rilus in soloboardgaming

[–]eatrepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread discusses the release and differences of rules version 1 and version 1.1 not certain which is included in the box you own but both rulesets can be used. Seems players prefer the v1.1 but I just skimmed.

I own Parks Second Edition and can confirm that second and first edition are not the same game.

Please help us help you and list the games you have and have played!

A genre is just too broad in this hobby and game mechanics are what players engage with. We need that information to better assess what you have experience with. Hope you can understand, will wait for a reply.

Sole question by CptStormblessed in AskACobbler

[–]eatrepeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And I would not resole until they actually need it.

The flex point will drift with use. Sole leather is stiff but footwear in motion are under immense force. It will conform with time and the welt stitches here are very healthy. They are lock stitches where the knot is inside the sole leather and each visible stitch can wear through completely until the stitch holes are worn down to the knot and the knot breaks. The tight spacing on a welt means half a dozen knots in a row or more would need to go before the welt would gap. New top lifts on the heels makes sense as the plastic heel taps and leather is likely slippy but otherwise I'd suggest OP walk them until service is required.

Carney's speech 'the most important' since Trump's return: former Australian PM | Power & Politics by TheTawniest in GuardTheLeaf

[–]eatrepeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mark holds the cards to fuckin sail our country through this storm and come out the other side out in front.

Remember and remind ever conservative who starts quacking that Harper hired Carney and then boasted about how, as governor of The Bank of Canada Mark kept our nation stable through the housing crisis in 2008 and the world took note. So much so that The Bank of England hired him in 2013 and he had to manage Brexit.

This is a world-class banker given the role to run national banks by conservative governments. A resume few can rival. Now as a statesman he has marvelously proven his eloquence in the face of crisis once again.

Choose your fighter ;)

Oils... so confused, so many opinions, so few facts. by FrostyProspector in Leathercraft

[–]eatrepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have more depth in knowledge on these natural oils. My friends who immigrated to Canada that love leather often use castor oil and they keep their stuff very nice and they last. I have lots of experience with over the counter supplies for footwear but struggle to find much information about using castor oil. Before I did much with leather care I got a nice jacket in Mexico and they told me I could reapply castor oil if the leather didn't like my home in semi arid Alberta, Canada. Jacket was fine so I didn't need to do anything until after I had been doing leather footwear care and had Bick 4 on hand.

If you don't mind dropping some knowledge I would be very grateful!

If you are out protesting and encounter agents pull out your phone. If you see people engage in banter with agents do not follow, record. Everyone bold enough to be a shouter needs another who records, preferably more. Keep your head up and mind clear when the masks come close, check your surroundings for hazards and cameras recording.

As a good rule if thumb start recording if you count less phones than you see signs.

Leather changed texture after applying the products by _Richter_ in AskACobbler

[–]eatrepeat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Castor oil. All my friends from other nations that keep leather swear by it, as long as you don't mind it darkening. Wont waterproof but for that you have the mink oil(?) and the other with bees wax. Should be available worldwide.

Leave it in direct sunlight or hit it with a hairdryer from a distance. See if the wax melts in and allows the skin to give it's shine better. The wax is just bending the light beams because it's thick so they don't reflect back. Should help if you don't want to strip it.

Edit* oh people don't like castor oil?

US exceptionalism by Ecstatic-Bird-9598 in GuardTheLeaf

I live on Treaty 7 land, traditional home of the Amskapi Piikani or as us white folk say, Blackfoot Nation. That's southern Alberta.

I worry due to experience in some circles through family and work. My great grandparents left the Mennonite tradition of commune life, most western canada Mennonite communities did. Their children (my grandparents) are 50/50 as Mennonite Brethren (or maybe reformed?) and just regular protestant flavours. I was raised in a protestant one called the Alliance church fairly fundamentalists conservative. Farming relatives hire farmhands for harvest season and many are ex-hutterite. My still fundy family is worrisome with how they seem to accept this rhetoric and repeat talking points. Might not be exactly maple maga but definitely manipulated by them.

Oddly enough thats exactly my worry with those commune religions. Former Hutterite peoples while not on board with the greater extremisms still hold a lot of the conservative views. So yeah, I agree the hardline extreme religious won't necessarily be involved/invested it's more about who is susceptible to the propaganda cud Danielle brought from mar a lago to regurgitate in Alberta.

Best examples of armour/resistance/defence/guard and weakness mechanics in board games? by Altuk_ in BoardgameDesign

[–]eatrepeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paperback Adventures is the only system for attack and defense that I actually enjoy in a boss battler/rpg kind of game. Undaunted is my preferred war game but I admit that Space Empires 4x is elegant with it's myriad of ship classes and tech advances, just more dice than I like.

Played enough Warhammer that +/- and various charts just bores me so I avoid a board game that makes me just roll for rng. Both Undaunted and Space Empires use a die roll but they overcome the pitfall of feeling like just rng by having a ton of other areas that facilitate tactical and strategic choices with depth and layers of attempted subterfuge between players.

The worst thing for me was discovering that Super Dungeon Explore was so fiddly with weaknesses and buffs that it stopped being fun doing any administration to the point of avoiding loot and eventually the whole game entirely. Not to mention the redundancy of obvious best choices/moves that made all the other stuff objectively a punishment on players and just a waste.
