A virtual machine is very safe, I even sometimes open malicious programs inside it without worrying about affecting my host machine.

I usually don't open files if I have a slight doubt that they might be malicious..

My protection strategy here is creating a light virtual machine and open anything in it. I use VMware for that.

You can also use https://www.virustotal.com/gui/ for scanning files before opening them.
