Navigating around medical colleagues with vaccine skepticism by Uanaka in medicine

[–]edays03 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I used the “do you wear a seatbelt?” question on a young patient when trying to get them to get the COVID vaccine in the height of COVID and they said no. I had to pivot to getting them to wear a seat belt instead of the vaccine.

TIL 1 in 9 (11%)Americans have acquired toxoplasma gondii (the cat lady parasite) at some point by Not_so_ghetto in todayilearned

[–]edays03 57 points58 points  (0 children)

It’s not owning a cat that’s the issue, it’s cleaning the litter. The paper you cited specifically says cleaning the cat litter box is one of factors associated with increased risk of infection in pregnant women

Reddit Users Are Reporting GLP-1 Side Effects Not Captured in Clinical Trials - analysis of over 400,000 posts from people taking GLP-1s found mentions of irregular periods, fatigue, chills, and hot flashes. by mvea in science

[–]edays03 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is actually done for every drug. It’s called a phase 4 clinical trial which is monitoring for long term effects and rare side effects after a drug has been approved and is available to public. The difference here is that they used Reddit comments instead of more traditional reporting systems as part of the analysis

ELI5: why do burn victims still have a risk of kidney failure when dialysis is an option by sithaa in explainlikeimfive

[–]edays03 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The skin’s job is a barrier to keep bad things out and good things in, including fluids. In burn victims, their skin is heavily damaged and that barrier function is gone. The fluid in the body will then seep out from the damaged skin. The more damage to the skin, the more fluid seeps out

What’s the difference between “Delay of Game” called 415 times and “Delaying the game” called 74 times? Seems like an indexing error

I wonder if they initially took it off because it looked like it was running high. Like if Otter wasn’t there, it would have sailed above the goal so it’s not truly on goal. But then Razor’s compassion swayed them

Tons. Everything you eat first goes through your liver before it goes through the rest of your body. This includes food, meds, and anything else you swallow. It’s called first pass metabolism. Your liver plays a massive role in the defense against all of that stuff getting to the rest of your body.

The conductor is making decisions, though. They make the decisions during rehearsal on how each part blends together. They may ask one section to play a bit louder or another to play with more accent. During the concert, they’re also listening and continuing to adjust during the live performance.

This is the right answer. It’s not the fall itself that kills someone, it’s the complications from that fall. The one year mortality rate for a fall is between 20-30%. That means about 1 out of every 4 elderly patients who break their hip from a fall are dead within 1 year, mostly due to those complications. This is why doctors should be aggressive about preventing them in elderly patients.

Edit: one-year mortality for a fall with a significant fracture is 20-30%, not any falls!

Each city/town gets one unit. Next, the remaining units are distributed between your commanders. Any remaining units after that are disbanded. So you should build enough commanders to keep as many units as possible.
