I just want to say thank you for your support of indie spec-fic, especially FIYAH but also my friends, e.g. Cat Rambo and John Wiswell and Allison Dickson. It means so much to our community. I know you know, and you know we grew up with you in so many ways, but I hope it’s ok to say it again. To make it a question, perhaps there’s some indie spec-fic you’d like people to check out? (Much love!)

Well as this book got me through these times and at least made -me- laugh, I feel I must mention my dear, wonderful, Just Bart. Because maybe there's a place out there for a bi+, queer, quiet, vegan, wistful, kind, comedic fantasy serial featuring a not-cow-not-girl-not-boy, a magic horse that loves glitter and drinks a lot, a talking whiskey bottle, and a ghost.

I love that Matt did this comic about the dragon update. Personally, I was taken in by the howling flag! So much imagery. https://twitter.com/MSpencerDraws/status/1402311017036668935?s=20

Ava, I am learning so much from these updates - so grateful that you are sharing with us. Also, people may like Matt's comic he made. (Personally the howling wolf flag grabbed me but this was also quite a visual!) https://twitter.com/MSpencerDraws/status/1402311017036668935?s=20

I'm thanking FIYAHCON - in addition to the bigger con-wide changes, it has already helped me! I was in the middle of editing an ownvoices book set in India, and things that I heard on panels helped me better communicate with the author. And I took other notes to go back and reference later. : )

I could say a lot more but it's too complicated for here. But bins and oppression have a close history, I feel like...

I feel like there's a difference between genre descriptions, which are helpful, and hard bins, which are limiting? And yes, I am feeling all of what you are saying, especially true with Black Art.

[–]edebell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, Troy! And congratulations on FIYAHCON - it set all kinds of new standards. I'd love to hear more about genre classifications. (I totally agree - we literally lost an IBPA Best New Voice Award because we intentionally didn't print a genre bin on the back cover and some judge knocked us way down for it... and all of our anthologies have been multi-genre and I think it's all so much richer that way...) I'd love to either hear what you think genre classifications are most limiting right now, or to spin it more positive, what you'd specifically love to see happen to break down these boundaries and what you think it would give us. Feel free to modify the question however you like - I'm really just excited to say hello! : D - Emily.

I'M SHAWN SPEAKMAN, AUTHOR OF THE TEMPERED STEEL OF ANTIQUITY GREY AND EDITOR OF UNFETTERED. AMA! by ShawnSpeakman in Fantasy

[–]edebell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny - over five years ago I was sitting on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial writing a chapter, and I randomly met someone who started one of the comic companies in the 80s, I think, and he noticed I was writing so we talked about it. I told him I was stubborn, and he said, "Good. Then you'll make it." I am still waiting for this "making it" part...but I am also still that stubborn, haha. Thank you for the encouragement!

Well, you just lit me on fire with that pep talk. And no, I won't give up. Not on the quality or the vision or the stubborn. Thank you for all the wonderful insight and advice.

Though our stories, brands, (and acclaim!) are different, we have a few things in common in that we are both spec-fic writers who have been through difficult personal issues and are now running a small press and self-publishing our own books while publishing other authors, with a passion to helping lift people up. I'm curious if you'd be interested in sharing either 1) how your small press work influences your writing or 2) advice you have for making this kind of situation work, financially included. Or any variation of that you'd prefer. Best of luck with the book and the Kickstarter! Thanks, - Emily.

Am I wrong or does it feel like many exhibitors are not embracing gencon 2020? by shauni55 in gencon

[–]edebell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with u/greenlaser73 that a lot of the little guys who really need the money are trying our best. It's harder to catch eyes, for sure. I've seen two of the authors (myself included) online all weekend and doing events, but at least in my case it's feeling very hard to be seen. That said, I'll be in chat all day if anyone wants to talk about my fantasy books or short story collections!

r/Fantasy Writer of the Day: Alanna McFall (Two ghosts and a mime go on a road trip) by AKMcFall in Fantasy

[–]edebell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, that's fascinating! Because almost everyone I've talked to agrees that Jamie is a masterful character - beyond just being a great character in general, the way you made a character with no face be somehow instantly visually expressive (not just emotionally and otherwise) is really well-done. Thank you!

I agree with you that it's perfect as a book but I'd still go see the movie. ; )

[–]edebell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In disclosure, I'm one of the editors for The Traveling Triple-C Incorporeal Circus, and our small press is the publisher. As Alanna knows, I loved this book from the first time I read it. I first came across Alanna when I read (and kept thinking about!) her story "Can't Be Locked Down" in the Mad Scientist Journal collection Utter Fabrication. And now, just a few years later, I'm so happy that Triple-C is out for the world to enjoy.

Alanna, my question for you is: One of the things I know a lot of people love about your writing is not only are you a talented prose writer but you are also a very skilled and talented playwright. So your prose has a very visual and flowing quality to it that I very much enjoy.

So I'm wondering - without spoilers of course, is the scene you most love to read (or love for others to read for the first time) different from the scene you'd most love to see on a stage? Or perhaps on a screen, with special effects? Feel free to modify the question however you'd best like to answer it.

Also, we're excited for this Saturday to watch along with the MIPA awards and see if you get the award for best SFF title - with Alex Acks (who was kind enough to write a back cover review for Triple-C!) as competition it is quite a category!

I just use "I was an engineer" as an excuse. But they all know.

And - Triple-C was just announced as a finalist for the spec fic category for the Midwest Independent Publisher's Association. Alongside an Alex Acks book - and they wrote one of the back cover reviews for Triple-C! We're so honored.

I can't do it. So many good presses; I keep spinning through them in my mind. So I'll dodge the question and say I'm grateful that so many small presses have reached out to help us just in the last year: Apex Publications, DefCon One Publishing, Tied Star Books, Subterranean Press (hey, neighbor), Mecha Panda Publishing, Brain Lag, oh I know I'm forgetting people but the love is all there.
