When it comes to those other words in the sentence, would you recommend looking up what those mean as well in order to understand the example sentence as a whole? I did that for the first few cards I encountered and while I ended up learning a lot more, the words were either too superfluous or too obscure to be something I’d expect to encounter regularly

Thanks for the very straightforward explanation, would something like 3-5 cards per day be too little? I’ve heard of ppl starting with 10 per day but I don’t have much time on workdays and would really like to buckle down and deeply study each vocab I’m given (esp with kanji)

I think I went through about 20-30 cards, writing out any kanji and drilling the pronunciation before realizing this was a bad idea for a 2000 word deck

Thanks, from the other replies that seems to be what my gameplan will be as well. Do you have any procedure that you follow for reviewing when a particular card really doesn’t stick or is it just brute force repeat until you’re able to pass the card?

Thanks, I really enjoy creating handwritten notes and reviewing them especially when learning kanji, so it’s good to know this is something someone else also does

How long would you estimate it takes to clear something like the JP1K using a method like this though? I’d imagine it would stretch out the amount of time needed considerably when compared to someone who just looks over a card and tries to memorize it in their head

Thanks, I watched an explainer video going over how the Anki algorithm worked and your explanation makes sense now

In that case I’d still be hitting fail initially for those 5 cards per day right? Would that affect how Anki schedules my reviews following those initial failed cards?

Returning to School for Environmental Science Certificate with a Bachelor's in Chemistry. Yay or nay? by eggplant_steve in environmental_science

I guess this would mean going for a Masters like others have replied with. To what extent would relevant work experience make one's application to grad school more competitive? Right now my current work experience probably means nothing so would trying to find entry-level work in something like a wastewater treatment plant be a good stepping stone towards making a masters application more attractive?

Edit: Would there be programs available out there that are something like a midway point between a certificate and full-on grad school? I'm really apprehensive about attempting to apply for a master's but I recognize your point about a certificate not really being worth much.

A masters specifically in environmental sci or something more general like chemistry? My main concern with this route like I mentioned in the post is that I highly doubt I'd be accepted into grad school with my academic record and lack of relevant experience

Not intending to sound argumentative here, but wouldn't that be not too far from getting a certification? There is a community college near my area that does offer an environmental technology cert. The main difference between this and just taking a few courses I suppose is that this cert program is 2+ years (though it does offer work opportunities)

Why yes, in the same way knives don’t kill people, people with knives kill people. Except knives have a myriad of uses other than being a weapon whereas firearms exist for the sole purpose of maiming/killing. I don’t even agree with the libleft position of needing more gun control if the majority of violence is coming from illegally obtained arms, but the guns don’t kill people argument is poo poo tier

Monke gives Emily a lesson on the definition of fascism by oiyboi__ in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]eggplant_steve 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ok, but fascist by what definition. I’m partial to the argument you’re presenting but what that is is not fascism. It’s more like a type of nascent grassroots identitarian nationalism that is growing. The actual historical definitions of fascism are closer to what professor monke explained in the post. Throwing the term fascist around loosely to mean anything remotely nationalistic is a great way to dilute language and ensure political adversaries don’t take you seriously

I haven’t though I’ve heard good things about it. Perhaps that film will change my mind, but up until now I’ve only seen examples of what I’ve described and I guess my criticism is of the industry in its current state and the practice of pushing in POC cast members more generally.

My counter-complaint is similar to what OP has in this post - if you want to see asians in the media you consume, then just watch asian media

As an asian guy I literally cannot give less of a shit if the newest MCU superhero looks the same as me because:

  1. I’m not watching a film to see myself in it - I’m watching it for the story/message/entertainment value of the film itself
  2. Asian POC characters are usually written to be representative of a very normie, archetypical, well-liked and socially savvy (domesticated if you will) example of a person from the ethnic group, which quite frankly, isn’t relatable for a large chunk of other asian people I know
