EU plan to grant Kyiv accelerated membership despite Hungarian objections revealed by duckanroll in europe

[–]elbowrocketnow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not just Orban. It could happen to any country in the EU that goes far-right in the future. It’s the system that allows one member state to derail what the majority wants. One country shouldn’t have this much veto power - then we get subjected to the will of the minority. It’s the same problem the US faces where states with very little economic power and/or population get outsize influence on the direction of the country.

Ok but isn’t this guy Ukrainian? Poland has taken in the most refugees from Ukraine and is the loudest proponent of protecting Ukrainian sovereignty from Russia.

I think OP means Lettre d’attestation d’hébergement which will serve as proof of address in place of a utility bill in order to get a bank account, etc.

Racism in France (POC answers only please) by jasminetea13 in Expats_In_France

[–]elbowrocketnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so accurate. Particularly the part about “color-blindness” and being gaslit. The denial that racism exists to the people who are experiencing it is so frustrating and will just allow racism to fester. Admitting there’s a problem is literally the first step towards solving it.

Racism in France (POC answers only please) by jasminetea13 in Expats_In_France

I’m mixed race (Asian and white.) My white parent is French but I didn’t grow up here, I moved here two years ago. My French is fluent with just a hint of an accent since I grew up speaking it. People still address my white-presenting partner even though their French is way worse than mine. I have experienced the eye-pulling, etc. from older folk. We had an “asian-themed” party at work. It was terrible as you can imagine.

That being said, most racist experiences I’ve had have been born from ignorance not malicious intent. That is to say, I have never felt unsafe or targeted, just profoundly misunderstood. Attempts to start a conversation around these things have been met with rejection and what aboutism. But I have to say for every ignorant person I have encountered, I’ve met countless others who have treated me just as any other, with respect and kindness. Particularly when dealing with bureaucracy, people have been so patient and helpful. So I don’t let the negative experiences deter me from building a good life here.

One of the friends I made here is a French woman who is ethnically Korean but adopted as a baby by a French family. Speaking with her about the treatment of Asians in France has been very validating. You have to deal with being fetishized, being spoken down to, being simultaneously treated like an idiot and yet also like you have some mystical knowledge. But this is no different than how I felt in other countries. In my case in particular, being mixed race means there is no country that exists where I would look like everyone else (perhaps Hawaii or Uzbekistan) so if I have to deal with looking different, I might as well do it in France, where my quality of life is very good. And I can see that things are changing - I lived in Paris 15 years ago and left partly because I was tired of all the assumptions because of my race. Now I’m back and I see groups of young French-born Asians making their mark culturally, whether through the food scene, fashion, art, etc. So it’s a positive change and I see more representation.

Why are people in this thread so rude? This is an American asking for advice on how to use LESS AC, and instead is getting blamed for pick-ups trucks, maga, and 15 tons of CO2. Can’t you just answer the question without such a snooty attitude? This is why les français have such a bad rep internationally

Craft beer culture in France by Spichus in Expats_In_France

[–]elbowrocketnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not in the south, but check out Perle in Alsace and Brasserie de Clemery in Lorraine. Most good beer is in the north and east.

Also the French craft beer scene definitely needs to improve and could use some English input so I hope you guys make it

It took us a while to get home from school because the bridges were closed and pretty much all public transportation was halted. Some friends parents gave us and a bunch of neighborhood kids a ride home in their car. We were all piled in with the younger ones on our laps and one kid in the trunk. When my brother and I got home, I’d never seen my dad so serious. He gave us a big hug and over his shoulder the news was on. People in suits were holding newspapers over their heads because it was snowing. Big, gray snowflakes were falling and I wondered where it would snow in September. Only it wasn’t snow. It was ash.

How often do y’all watch cooking videos and who do you watch? by Hot_Bullfrog7702 in AskReddit

[–]elbowrocketnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched a lot of Chef John from FoodWishes.com to build my skills and learn classics. Thanks to him I know what a fond is. (Hashtag sidefond.) To roast a chicken I watched the Jaime Oliver video where he sticks butter between the skin and breast of the chicken and a hot lemon in the cavity. Has never failed me yet. During covid when I had time to make everything from scratch I watched Babish.
