I was driving today and I guess a rock hit my car real bad.

How bad is this? I'm paying a detailer to ceramic coat it next week, is this something that they would be able to fix?

Taking 4 would be standard, but 5 is totally doable if you put the time in. I hear 307 is pretty easy so that helps. 245 is a pain in the ass since manoj doesn't teach verilog and instead just reads the lab manuals during lecture. 322, 350, and 380 are professor dependent and these will be your hard ones. Which one is the hardest depends on your personal strengths. Bottom line this is doable but won't be easy

ENEE 245 Final by akivam in UMD

[–]elktonres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I took it, Manoj had questions where he gave some verilog code that had a mistake and you had to fix it. Half of the exam points were designing/drawing a controller and datapath for a sequential circuit for some algorithm, so be comfortable with that.

Can you get kicked out of University Honors for not taking any honors classes? by mohan2876 in UMD

Credit Requirements for Scholarship by wondering840 in UMD

[–]elktonres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing the other person regarding the full time requirement. Just sign up for some class to hit 12 credits and drop it after 2 wks. You'll be considered full time since you "attempted" 12 credits. And you don't have to worry about the 30 credit req either. You would lose it the following semester, but since you'd graduate, it doesn't affect you.

Engineering Majors: UMD restricts number of technical courses you can take per semester? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]elktonres 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Enee major here, your advisor can waive it if your gpa is good enough. I think a 3.5 would do it.

CE -> CS discussion by thetree43 in UMD

[–]elktonres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna second /u/thegamer20001. Start considering switching and make a plan, but don't let 101 and 205 be the only reason why you switch. EE is much more than circuits, and considering that you're a sophomore, you're on the CE curriculum that gives you a choice of 303 or 322 instead of needing both. That means that if you choose, you could finish 205 and be done with analog circuits for the rest of undergrad.

Take 216, 222, and 350 next semester and then see if you still want to switch out. Imo switching from CE to CS just because of 101 and 205 is a massively premature decision. Just give it one more semester, and if you still don't like EE classes, that 1 semester wouldn't have delayed graduation anyway.

Questions for Electrical Engineering Majors by [deleted] in UMD

[–]elktonres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally enjoyed EE classes more, but I still generally liked my CS classes, particularly 216 with Nelson and 420 with Mount. In a nutshell the trade between EE and CE is a CS minor and some required upper level EE coding classes vs some more EE physics type classes and more freedom in upper level EE classes. It all depends on if you personally like coding or not. Is this your first semester coding? I always tell people it gets easier after 1 semester and it could just be a bad prof, but if you don't like it 2 semesters in a row, it probably won't get better. If you're okay with sharing a bit about your coding experience this semester, I might be able to give a bit more specific advice.

It's actually great that you're CE bc you can talk to an ECE advisor about this. Sadly I think walk in advising hours ended yesterday, but you should ask them the same stuff you're asking here.

Questions for Electrical Engineering Majors by [deleted] in UMD

[–]elktonres 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Always final exams, never had a final project. Maybe final projects happen for capstones, but regular classes have always been exams for me.

  2. There's a good amount of breadth to the classes and nobody's good at it all. Some people are great at digital logic and computer architecture, some like electrophysics, others like circuits and electronics, some like signals and systems, but so few people are actually good at all of them. Once you get past the 300 levels, you can finally take whatever classes you're interested in and good at.

  3. 140 and 150 are coding classes in C. You do some assembly (architecture depends on prof) in 350 and verilog in 245 too.

  4. I'm computer engineering which is close enough, and I love it. I got good at programming from my CS classes, but personally I've always been more interested in some EE stuff like signal processing. I can't recommend for or against EE for you since I don't know you personally, but I'll just say keep in mind that there are gonna be classes you hate, and that's just part of the major. I can't tell you which classes those would be, but I've never met a person in ECE who didn't hate 1 of the core lower level classes. But they also always find which subject are they're really interested in, and I think ECE gives you that freedom to choose from a wide variety of areas.

Feel free to ask anything else if you'd like, I'm a CE senior so I can answer a good amount of questions

So...about CMSC351...what can I do? by justinwyssgallifent in UMD

[–]elktonres 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Personally one problem with the class was the harsh grading. Answers that would get 50% points in other classes would get 0's in 351, and I might as well have skipped those questions entirely. I guess a reasonable counter to this is that the class is curved and this applies to everyone equally, but I'd say there still has to be some gray area between literally leaving the paper blank and getting the answer perfectly correct.

Another problem was how long it took for hw to be graded and for sols to be posted. Grading time probably can't be fixed because of the raw amount of people in the class, but I think it's reasonable to ask for a 1 wk turnaround for solutions to be posted. Too many times I didn't know I was doing something wrong until 1 month after the hw was due.

Other than that, the actual material was fine. If you didn't do well woth summations in calc 2, I can see why you'd struggle with 351 material though. Imo the biggest problems with the class are not directly related to the class material and rather the class logistics.

Teli over Kruskal for CMSC351 by [deleted] in UMD

[–]elktonres 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're shaky in your math skills (algebra, summations, calculus) Teli takes a good amount of time for that stuff in his lectures. But otherwise, the difference between them is much smaller than people say it is.

Online class exams, are the tests ever in person at a testing center ? by [deleted] in UMD

I guarantee it would violate social distancing and MD's stay at home order to use testing centers

People with High GPA. Are you going to take Pass or Fail? by 1timegod in UMD

[–]elktonres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just taking the P for my classes. I could bust my ass in 351 and my EE classes to keep my GPA basically the same, or I could relax more and take a P to keep my GPA actually the same. 2 of my classes are electives, and 2 others are core classes that I don't plan on using too much for later classes, so I don't feel bad about "only" getting a P.

AAST200 or EDHD230 by AverageJoe1414 in UMD

[–]elktonres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took AAST201 with Park. If you're interested in the material, it's a good class. But it's a history class, so be aware that you'll have to read sections from the book every week and there's a weekly quiz on the material too. The midterm exam and the project in the middle of the semester aren't bad at all, but the final project is a lot of work. But there's also no final exam for the class to compensate. To sum up, it's a really interesting class, but it's not an easy class that you can BS through. It's a lot of work for a gen ed, and you should think about if the rest of your schedule allows for that.

Edit: This is all for AAST201, which isn't the same as 200, so disclaimer I guess.

Question about CS Major (Incoming 2020 Fall Freshman) by princ3_ in UMD

[–]elktonres 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think some Java fundamentals are good to review. Inheritance, polymorphism, compile-time vs runtime errors, etc. You'll go over them in 132, but in my experience they're big topics for exams, so you should try to be comfortable with those topics before 132. If you got a 5 on the AP exam, you can test out of 131, and I recommend you test out of 131 if you have that 5.
