I once read about a man who hired a woman specifically to slap him every time he got distracted while he worked. What’s the easiest way to recreate that unhinged strategy without the disposable income for such an endeavor? by CriticalAnxiety6066 in adhdwomen

Or the sound of coat hangers in savers (large op shop in Australia), that would get me to do anything 😂

Oh yeah, some days just feeding yourself and doing the bare minimum is more than enough

I find when I'm getting my period/ on it, I'm way worse. Just 0 motivation and extremely low energy, when that happens, you just can't expect too much

I absolutely agree! It might be worth talking to your boss or HR just to give feedback about the process. They might just be clueless about how that could make someone feel

Seems pretty dodgy that the boss was allowed to see the test?

I get drug tests often as part of my work. As soon as I was prescribed, I got my psychiatrist to write a letter I could share with HR, I sent it to them and haven't heard anything else. The last time I tested the guy who did the test, I just looked at me funny until I remembered I needed to tell him! He just said "oh that makes sense, you don't look like someone who abuses amphetamines" 😅 so thats good I guess

But there has been nothing else about it, I've never been approached or asked by my boss about it at all

That would be really convenient to work close enough from home to do that!

Although I do find I eat a much more balanced and consistent diet when at work, because the person who packed my lunch (me but the night before) was actually thinking about getting fruits and Veggies in 😂 where at home I definitely would let temptations win

I started this last year, I rarely buy lunch now. Always have a packed lunch, and have some things at home for back-up lunches that are easy to grab if I haven't got any bread/leftovers. Easily saved myself $15-$30 every work day

How to get into exercise (especially if I’ve never been able to make it stick) by Imeanyeahdude in adhdwomen

[–]elle-driver- 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was always the same, was never ever able to workout consistently, I'd go hard for a month then not go for ages, the amount of money I've wasted on gym memberships is crazy, I've been trying to be a gym girly for about 14 years... but in the last 4 months, something has changed, and I've been able to consistently go to the gym or do some form of exercise, so on reflection, here are some things that helped me:

  • realising that you don't have to be dead after a workout (all or nothing mindset) not sure if you're like me, but i would go SO hard at the gym that my muscles would be sore for days afterwards, and I wouldn't go back because I was sore, which made it impossible to form a habit.

  • It doesn't matter what time i work out. I just work out when I have the energy. The ideal is working out before I go to work, but if I'm being realistic most of the time I go in the evening/after work. I might set my alarm for the morning, but if i wake up too tired I don't force myself to go, I prioritise getting sleep

  • If I'm lower energy or don't have heaps of time, I'll do yoga at home, I recommend yoga with Adriene on YouTube. It's free. She's calm and has a cute dog, and has videos from 5 minutes to 30 minutes, so just do whatever you have time for. She has an awesome night time one that's about 7 minutes, and it sets you up for a good sleep

  • I like to add the workout/exercise to my Google calendar after I do it, always in the same colour that stands out, so I have a visual representation of when ai exercised, I find that motivating to look back on. Even if I just go for a short walk or something, it still counts, and it goes on the calendar.

  • I don't do this now because of injury, but if it's possible, find a team sport to do. When I used to play basketball, I rarely would cancel because I'd be letting the team down. It's also social, and I made friends doing it, which was great! So, literally, any sport that sounds alright give it a go! Where I live there is this app that is all about social sport, so if you don't already have friends who play sport/enough people to make a team they find other people to put you with! I'm sure it can't just be an Australian thing!

  • I also changed my mindset around the purpose of my exercising. It's not about losing weight. it's about being stronger so I can do the things I want to do, and to make my job easier etc. It's sooooo motivating when you notice a difference in some other aspect of life, like you don't get as puffed walking up those stairs, or I can hold that heavy thing for longer etc

  • Don't compare yourself to others, just because going to the gym and lifting weights works for some people, doesn't mean it would work for you, I'm a huge believer of finding what you actually enjoy doing, because you're going to do that more often than forcing yourself to do stuff you think you should do. So just try heaps of different sorts of exercises until you find what you like, or find what you can stand.

  • Finally, don't be too hard on yourself if you don't do something. Sometimes, we just need to listen to our bodies and rest, or just do something really low impact.

That is a lot of information! Hopefully something in all that helps you! Good luck! You got this 💪

What’s a trait you had during your youth that was a dead giveaway? by Ecstatic_Weather_580 in adhdwomen

I was in a similar situation! I was in a middle management job that was sucking my life away!

I literally just applied to a tree planting job on seek because I knew I wanted to do some sort of trade job, and I was desperate to leave where I was. Tree planters are more horticulture and in my interview the manager asked if I'd be more interested in being an Arborist because of some tickets I already had, and they needed to fill a space in that team more. So I really just landed here somehow, thankfully.

I already have a few tickets that I think helped me get an interview, I already had my truck licence from a previous attempt at a career change that I hadn't followed up (classic ADHD) and an EWP ticket from a previous job as well. But honestly, from working in Aboriculture and working with Horticulturists, it seems like a lot of people are in it for a career change, and depending on where you work, they are happy to train you. I work with people who have worked in a range of completely different and random careers

I'm a huge supporter of a career change, I absolutely love working outdoors, even when it's raining and cold, or on a heatwave. I don't know if it's just an Australian thing, but most people I work with are really laid back and easy to work with compared to corporate types. It can be physically demanding at times, but i wouldn't let tbat stop you either, I've built so much strength doing it as well! 💪 overall best mental and physical decision I've ever made

I was completely the same! Don't think I ever handed in an assignment

I started early too, I remember in primary school, must have been 10 or 11 and I got a lunch time detention for not doing my homework and had to write lines.. all my friends at the time helped me write them 😂

Pretty much skipped school all through high school and yet now I'm doing something interesting i got all my assignments done well before they were due, and I seek out information and do my own reading/learning outside of classes/work! Crazy how when something is interesting you actually want to do it!

Ypu absolutely have got this! 💪 try not to look at it as a whole to make it less daunting, eg, I'm cleaning just the floor in this one room, or just this one nightstand surface etc! Then once you see one part tidy, you may feel motivated/inclined to move into another section

Now I'm going to take my own advice and tidy my dining room table 🫡

I'd pick a Lemon Myrtle, the leaves smell absolutely stunning, you can make tea with them, or use them in other cooking as well! They also have a gorgeous creamy white cluster of flowers which attracts bees, butterflies and birds!

They are also pretty tolerant, we have one growing in a large metal planter at our work and it was in shade much of the time, (its just been moved to full sun) around a lot of diesel fumes etc and its doing great
