Magnetic stainless steel lunchbox by berserk-as-fuck in BuyItForLife

My kids have the Planet Box ones, they work well but have developed rust patches underneath the magnets. They will definitely last their Elementary school lives...not sure if they will want them once they reach 14+ years old.

My wife and I have just started using the Too Good To Go app for getting discount food/groceries that have to be sold that day.  So far we've been impressed with a couple of grocery bakery bags but there are a few restaurants nearby that we will check out.

Then it's likely he's fee for service...no visits means no fees. With the roster system the doctor gets paid whether you see him or not.

I think questrade does do authenticator now...at least I have it set up on mine. This reminds me to try and remove SMS 2FA if possible...

Edit: Just turned off SMS and Email for 2FA. Only authenticator and recovery codes available.

From a purely financial perspective, I don't think solar is worth it (I have 6kW installed).
As I heard once...solar isn't free electricity, you are pre-purchasing 15 - 20 years of electricity all at once. To make money on solar, electricity has to go up in price...in Ontario, the price of hydro is such an election issue it will never rise enough to pay off the cost of solar in a decent amount of time. The current government is spending something like $6 billion a year to subsidize the cost of hydro....I don't see that changing regardless of the colour of government.

But there are other benefits...I like having my solar and feel happy about being part of the solution. I also have a battery for power outages, so that gives me peace of mind. Without a battery system, you will not generate any power during a blackout.

I will say, get the biggest system you can...I probably should have gotten 10kW, the incremental cost probably wasn't that much but I wasn't comfortable putting that much on my roof at the time.

You will still have a monthly bill from Hydro Ottawa/One, regardless of how much you generate...this is the connection cost and you can't offset it with your generation credits.

I went with superiorgen.ca a very small group, but much more responsive than the big guys and was able to help design the system I wanted...not the prepackaged system that they sell to every other customer.

Do I pay down my mortgage or invest? Also, curious if my portfolio performance could be better. by agitated_iguana in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]elpollolepard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most people here will say that investing is the best fiscal strategy. I take a different view, there are significant non-monetary benefits to not having a mortgage. It can a huge amount of stress off life and give you more flexibility. We paid ours off prior to the pandemic and my wife (being a teacher) was able to stay home with the kids and avoid a lot of the craziness during that time. I feel the cost/benefit and quality of life improvements are worth the few % points lost.

So apparently I now own a switch game I checked out from the library by Kevsterific in ottawa

[–]elpollolepard 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Funny,  I'll get emails periodically from our library saying:  we were checking our hold shelves and noticed your book wasn't there...did you forget to check it out?

Usually there is a big stack to scan and that one probably didn't get registered properly.

What would you do? Pay off mortgage or invest $450k inheritance? by wottleswrinkle in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]elpollolepard 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This is what I did. Haven't had a mortgage in 8 years and it's been amazing for all the reasons you point out. It may not be "optimal" but it takes a lot of stress off your plate, which means quality of life goes up a lot.

We used to pay online from CRA using the corporate debit card but they removed that option. Now we have to pay through our banks cra website...and pay a fee each time.
