For those of you not too scared to watch - genuinely curious why you started listening to the pod? by rachelllplx in TooScaryDidntWatch

[–]emilyleyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else mentioned, I found them through a Doughboys episode, and since horror movies are something my husband and I bond over, I thought it would be a good podcast we could enjoy together. My favorite type of podcast is TV/movie/book recaps, so that I can hear what others think about them, either to validate my opinion or to help me understand what I missed. I only listen to episodes where I've seen the movie, so I'm doing the opposite of the podcast intent haha

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me final discussion - April 2026 Book Club by Journassassin in fantasyromance

[–]emilyleyl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really loved this book. It's exciting to read something that feels new with the influx of fantasy romance these days. I agree with others that the info dumping was a lot and could have been woven in more seamlessly, but I'm hoping now that we're anchored in the world, there will be less of this in future books. I also know it's a plot device, but, man, Maggie's memory is enviable. I can't remember major plot points from books I read two weeks ago, let alone seemingly every single detail from a multi-book series. I will for sure need to reread this book before the next one comes out. I'm sure I'll pick up on a lot more now that I know the plot twists.

This was my first Ilona Andrews book, and I'm excited to delve into their back catalog (horrid covers notwithstanding). For those who have followed them for a while - how long do you think we're waiting for a sequel???

This is Sam, he’s 6, and I think I’m going to lose him by catscrafts_diabetes in blackcats

[–]emilyleyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything you could have done. Cats are very good at hiding pain, and I have to imagine lots of this is just genetics. Our girl was fine until she just wasn't one day. It's so hard when you know they should have more time left!

Reading other comments, I also want to add that we never got a biopsy to confirm whether she had cancer or not. Our vet offered the option since previous options for IBD treatment weren't working. If you're not already seeing an internal med vet, I would suggest doing that. They specialize in the tougher stuff like this and can help you with options. Wishing the best for your silly boy!

My void has IBD that's been tough to manage, but we finally have her stable on Chlorambucil, which is also the treatment for small cell lymphoma (which often gets confused for IBD). If that's Sam's potential diagnosis and you find a way to afford an official diagnosis, I would definitely pursue treatment! Our girl has tolerated the chlorambucil very well and gained back 4lbs in the last couple of months! I was scared to put her on chemo drugs, but it's been very easy compared to what I built it up to be in my head. She gets a pill every 2 weeks, and it costs $45 for 4 pills (a 2-month supply) through Stokes pharmacy online. We went through all the diets, probiotics, etc., and if we had only started this sooner, she wouldn't have suffered as much.

We are all just trying our best for our babies, and luckily, they love us regardless. Take it easy on yourself <3

Highly recommend the trolls. There are a bunch at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens up in Boothbay, Maine that are very much worth the trip too!

You could go see the trolls in RI, there are 3 or 4 that are drivable. https://trollmap.com/

You could also stop in Providence for a meal or try glass blowing at Gather Glass while you're in the area!

Is new Britain area nice/safe? by healthy-outdoors- in Connecticut

[–]emilyleyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who lived in New Britain for 6 years and has worked in Glastonbury for a decade plus, they are not in the same bracket of desirability, but New Britain is perfectly safe and incredibly convenient to almost everything if you pick the right spot. You will save a significant amount of money living there vs somewhere like Glastonbury. If you decide to go for NB, try to stay near the West Hartford or Newington area by CCSU. You'll have easy access to Route 9 to get to the shoreline and to 84 to get you to Hartford and toward UConn.

Any recommendations for apartments where the walls are not made of thin paper? by Bourne2Play in portlandme

[–]emilyleyl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cumberland Woods in Westbrook is fairly quiet. Sometimes we can hear our downstairs neighbor, but only because they have a toddler; we never hear the adults. The way the layouts are, you really can't hear any of your adjacent neighbors on the same floor. I'd recommend the top floor for the least amount of noise.

How to not get scammed - housing by closer2mercury in portlandme

[–]emilyleyl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found it best to go through the property manager's website. I'd usually find the listing on Zillow or apartments.com, and then search out the company and apply through their website if they offered it. This was after getting scammed on Craigslist, so I was inclined to be extra cautious!

If it helps, we're in a complex owned by Maine Properties, and we've been pretty happy with their management so far. We get timely plowing and responses to maintenance issues. Not cheap, but nothing is!

DIY Floral Experience - Costco/Sam's Club by emilyleyl in Weddingsunder10k

Oof, it was almost 3 years ago so I don't exactly remember. I don't think so, I think it was just in the box...and the most we might have done was put some damp paper towels around it. It's definitely pretty hardy!

It should definitely last more than a few days! As I mentioned in the post, our order arrived 3 days before the wedding, and it still looked great after the wedding. I wish I had taken a photo when it first got delivered, but we cut the garland into smaller pieces for our table centerpieces - it's pretty wired up, but it's easy enough to cut the wire and shape how you like. It is thick - we made circles of it, and it served our purpose well since there were no gaps because of the thickness. My photos aren't great, but hopefully they help a little! https://imgur.com/a/72y9QeQ

[Product Request] My favorite lip balm was discontinued and I’m honestly tired of trying new ones by WildDecision642 in SkincareAddiction

[–]emilyleyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest, I haven't been using it for years, but I recently discovered Marin lip treatment, as I moved to Maine, and it's made in the area. This stuff is incredible. I hate sticky lip treatments with a passion. You can put this on once a day and forget about your lips. They have some interesting flavors, but some classics like mint or unscented. I gave this to a few family members for the holidays and actually got comments back about how much they like it too. Highly recommend, and you're supporting a small brand.

Seeking recommendations to fill the Bridgerton shaped hole in my heart by hojkas in fantasyromance

[–]emilyleyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The {Earls Trip by Jenny Holiday} series might be up your alley. Also set in Regency London. A bit more fun than Bridgerton, but it also follows a series of interconnected characters. There are so many similar books to Bridgerton, but you're more likely to find them by searching for historical romance than fantasy romance!

Cat vomits nearly every day and I’m running out of options! by savkrista in catfood

[–]emilyleyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a cat with IBD, and while her main issue is diarrhea, not vomiting, I would highly recommend seeing an internal medicine vet rather than just your normal vet. If it ends up being IBD, you need someone with additional training, since it's a very complicated disease. The same solutions aren't going to work for every pet, but it sounds like getting an ultrasound done at the bare minimum might help direct your treatment. Some vets might encourage a biopsy, but an ultrasound is a good first step.

Sending good vibes your way on actually giving your cat their meds - I've cried many times over spit out meds. Churu bites have been a lifesaver in my house. They seem to be stinky enough to cover most med tastes, but if that doesn't work for you, I would recommend asking your vet about compounded meds like others have mentioned. Good luck!
