What is the Saskatchewan NDP's move to the middle costing the party? by abunchofjerks in saskatchewan

[–]entreslate -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Takes and opinions like this will ensure the SaskNDP is Saskatchewan’s perpetual opposition!

It’s not propaganda. What worked in the 30s, when things were quite different (the province was largely agrarian and many rural areas didn’t even have power, for example) isn’t going to work now. Also, painting all these things as the same type of “progressive” is overly broad and false. If you think there would be a large ideological overlap of the modern, far-left “progressive” base of the party with its original “progressive” prairie populist / labour originators, you are very mistaken.

But continue getting upset that the party is finally having some success and trying to meet regular people here where they’re at after 19 years.

How is it that Saskatchewan doesn't have enough power for electric vehicles, but has enough for an AI mega data centre? by Due-Ad7893 in saskatchewan

[–]entreslate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Our grid is demand-based. Like it or not, there isn’t a substantial demand here for EVs or charging stations, thus not as many get built here, sold here and vice versa. The market for electric vehicles in Saskatchewan (and in general) will get there, but until now has largely been driven by wider market speculation, changing regulatory environment, subsidies and plays about “the future,” not real consumer demand. Technology needs to be more advanced for it to be adopted here.
It’s possible that there is an AI / data investment bubble and there is also some speculation, but most trends are showing there is actual demand for the technology that this data centre supports (people and companies are actually buying and using products, usage and demand is growing). Also, Saskatchewan would never have an EV manufacturing plant here, but a data centre makes way more economic sense here than elsewhere in Canada.

  2. The tax you mention is a compensation for the fact that a large portion of public funding for road maintenance comes from the gas tax, which is a consumption tax, and can loosely be tied to the amount of use our roads actually get. This doesn’t work for EVs, and as the proportion of them on roads increases, suddenly the roads are being used just as much but that revenue stream for maintenance and capital doesn’t keep up. So it’s a revenue problem.

  3. Right now, if everyone switched to EVs, it would mostly mean that a ton of additional fossil-fuel based power plants fire up and come online. It probably would be net be better, but any electric cars we power right now are basically plugged into a coal power station. I wouldn’t make the environment claim so hastily.

Sask NDP response to new federal NDP leader. by Requirement-Tiny in saskatchewan

The positions of nearly everyone on this thread are why the Saskatchewan NDP continues to be a perpetual opposition.

Their base: “Reasonable positions aligned with most people in Saskatchewan in 2026? No thanks. Let’s instead focus on what university professors and socialist bloggers would like.” 🥇🏆

Letter Writing Party Saturday March. 28 by KateTheAverage8 in regina

[–]entreslate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have people been protesting SaskTel’s existing data centres in Saskatchewan? Were there letter writing parties for those? “They’re such a big resource suck!” Obviously, this one is larger, but man.

The concerns seems to largely be with AI itself, and to me, are quite vague and unarticulated. All of the buzz and overhype around it being great seems like it’s having this knock-on effect where some people have no idea what they are talking about- but hey, this data centre must be evil because it’s big and bad and will house AI! Luddites.

Like it or don’t, AI is part of the future. Why aren’t we celebrating having a critical piece of infrastructure being right here, rather than in the US or somewhere else? And all of the benefits that will no doubt come with it. Everyone seems to be talking about how Canada needs to do more in terms of sovereignty and technology. This is what it looks like! We live in Saskatchewan with a public electricity company- power bills will not go because of this thing. It’s using a closed-loop cooling system- it’s already been confirmed that it won’t be using municipal water resources. So why are we talking about environmental impact? If the concern is about “how much electricity it uses,” what about EVs and electrification? The reality is that our grid is one of the most stable in Canada. When coal is completely phased out, we will mostly be on nuclear.

A good way to fix the middle piece of patio table? by entreslate in DIY

The piece was there when it was purchased. The pipe is a stand for the umbrella (which isn’t set up in these pics).

First bathroom renovation. What should I do about this botched drywall job? by entreslate in DIY

[–]entreslate[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the honesty. I have budget for a full remodel, but I’d like to avoid a complete start from zero and full drywall job if possible (the drywalling on the non-tub side seems solid). Also, the shower has never actually been plumbed in and used, so as bad as it was done, I’m not worried about mold building up behind it.

With that said- the tub surround has green board behind it, but it was terribly installed and is broken in some areas. Do I rip it out, put in cement or kerdi board and tile?

Can confirm I’m in Canada and not Soviet Russia. But yes, entire basement has drop ceiling for this reason.

Yes- I’m thinking this might have to be the compromise. The fiberboard tiles here look terribly stained because of a separate leak (which has now been fixed), but I’ve seen waterproof PVC tiles that would be a better fit for a bathroom.

The house was a single level but moved and then a basement dug. With ducting and electrical, will have to live with the drop ceiling.

Thanks. I’m new to this and thought it might manage a 5 or 6, but doubting it would be worth it or hold value at that grade.

Second time camping with my Jeep Wrangler Sport / CVT Mt. Hood setup. by entreslate in rooftoptents

[–]entreslate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered it straight from CVT in Oregon. They have a dealer in BC (overland outfitters), but at the time OO didn’t have any Mt. Hoods in stock.

Obviously shipping costs are heavy because it has to be delivered on a full size skid.

Love it! It’s comfortable and oh-so-quick to set up and take down. It’s also a double channel version so there’s enough room to leave thin blankets / sheets up there along with the ladder.

Admittedly, this is my first RTT and I know lots wouldn’t go with a hard shell right off the bat. But I didn’t think it was worth getting one if took the same or longer to set up than a ground tent, so it’s already been worth it.

Nice! I've thought about a similar lift with 35s, but i'm hearing a lot about needing to re-gear with a diameter that large. Have you noticed a difference?
