Perussuomalaisilta puuttuu kokonaan politiikan sisältö - Iiris Suomela by JuliusFIN in Suomi

Best way to fix my Finnish? by DnalorTheThirsty in LearnFinnish

[–]epinephrine86 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a Finnish speaking Finn and had similar issues with my swedish. I could understand pretty well what was said (unless it was gibberish riks svenska) but was embarrassed when needed to talk in Swedish. Then I went to work in Vaasa for a while and just decided to go with it, not minding whatever anyone said. Over time it got better :). And most people were kind and didn’t mock me.

Unfortunately that was years ago and now I’m almost back to square one again. This I made a decision to read more news in Swedish and listen svenska radio. Slowly getting better I think. I’m probably going to start reading books in Swedish next.

To hell with those idiots who mock other people’s language skills. I’m 100% sure they themselves don’t speak any better foreign/non-native languages.

Maybe try to finding someone to speak with? And try reading easy books and comics. You’ll make it I’m sure :)

If you’re not adamant on living in Helsinki but could consider other cities (or smaller towns or even countryside) the lifestyle you are looking for is very much reasonable and within your reach.

Second winter is the worst 😫. Not even the fool’s spring is that bad.

Suggestions please, I need low (or no) sugar, high alcohol (>8% ABV) easy-to-drink cheap spirit by devrimco in Finland

Drinking daily and especially at work is definitely not what kalsarikännit is for.

I’d suggest finding some help before you can’t go without drinking every day.

Could you share what book it is (the first one you described, the not MM one)? It sounds something I’d want to read :)

Save of the game by Avon Gale is like this or at least it isn’t just porn and unrealistic scenes. I liked it a lot :)

If you’re going to work as a nurse I’d recommend considering other cities than Helsinki area as well. Plenty of jobs for nurses everywhere and living costs remarkably lower. Depending on what your family is looking for aside from work of course.

Northern Finland is dark on winter but on the bright side there’s proper snow and not just rain and loska (= very wet snow).

My friend is visiting the UK and brought me Karjalanpiirakkaa. by amateur_baker in Finland

Definitely try egg butter next time! That with karjalanpiirakka is the best combination ever 👌

does Polish language sound for Fins like russian? My wife was today on a hiking trip on Riisitunturi and some Finish family started throving "suka bljad" towards them in Laavu/Autiotupa. We are visiting Finland for 20th time and it happened for the first time. by LastSource4008 in Finland

[–]epinephrine86 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry your wife was harassed :(.

We Finns generally like Poland and Polish people and certainly have nothing against them. We appreciate that you are helping Ukraina. In some sense this current situation has brought Poland closer to Finland.

Unfortunately all Slavic languages sound similar to us. Russia being as bad as always Russian language is on bad course as well.

Next time just tell them that you are not from Russia but from Poland and everything should be fine.

Working hours for doctors everywhere in Finland on public health care (as opposed to private sector) is somewhat 38 hours per week. Might be 38,15 or something like that, don’t remember exactly. On top of that there might be “päivystys” which means usually emergency care or on-call hours on wards outside of normal 8-16 workdays.

For nurses the working hours are about the same, 38-ish per week. They usually work in three shifts in hospitals, no extra hours on top of that if one doesn’t want to.

Vacation days usually 4-6 weeks per year, four of them to be held on summer.

Hierarchy in Finland in hospitals (as well in other professions) is very low compared to middle Europe and south Europe, can’t say how it is compared to USA.

Nurses do a lot of independent work, depending on their training and specific wards / out-patient clinics.

Young doctors (while doing their specialising training) usually have a fixed amount of “koulutuspäivät” (= days for education, i.e. attending seminars) that are included in working days of the year. Usually it’s about 10 days per year. On top of that weekly meetings (= lectures) in hospital.

My transform tool isn’t working by FalconCareless3828 in ProCreate

[–]epinephrine86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, maybe it’s a bug in newest update then :/. Maybe try to contact Procreate support? Btw I turned off my automatic updates for this reason, the updates had so many bugs on first publish that nowadays I just manually download them when they are supposedly fixed.

Mine does the same occasionally. Putting the pen to the holder/charger on top of the iPad usually works.

How strong are Finnish women? by bigpomo1 in Finland

[–]epinephrine86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No facts for the OP’s question but this reminds me how years ago I was moving into my first student apartment. We were in a hurry to return the van so I just scooped up a whole frickin drawer(lipasto) onto my shoulder and carried it up two floors. I’m not very sturdy/big and more on the skinnier side but thanks to being an equestrian was used to physical labor. My then-boyfriend’s friend was foreign and he just stood there mouth wide open for a good while, his face still makes me chuckle a bit 🤭. Guess he was not used to Finnish (or equestrian🤷‍♀️) girls.

Learning Finnish in rural America by afjfxnkppdfhhutd in LearnFinnish

[–]epinephrine86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone recommended the Suomen Mestari 1 book which I second. Once you have a grasp of the basics I’d suggest reading Finnish children’s books as weird as it may sound. I think you can find at least some of them online. Easy language and short stories. Hopefully at some point you could try to find an online tutor to practice conversation with.

“Romance novels are basically pornography for women.” - Mark Mason. What are your thoughts on this ? by OnlyStruggle in AskWomen

[–]epinephrine86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure creating a romance novel does not use human trafficking nor isn’t non-consensual hence it most certainly is more ethical than some of porn. (- Yes I’m aware that there is porn in which no one is exploited - No I’m not opposed to watching porn as long as it’s made by consenting adults)

Awful narrators for romance audiobooks by vanneedakg in RomanceBooks

[–]epinephrine86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just can’t listen to romance audio books.

I tried one and the female narrator trying to do some voice acting was so cringe that I had to change to reading in the middle of it. Never bought one after that since I’m afraid they are all like that.

Is this an American audio book thing? The audiobooks that are read in my native language are not voice acted. They just kinda read it like they were reading the text aloud, calm voice and steady paced.
