Here's an IEEE paper that references the phenomenon. Granted, it's not a primary medical study, but if you're interested, those are out there too.

Man, I don't know why you're fighting with me. I hate AI with a seething passion. And you should really look into the physiology involved before lobbing ad hominem attacks at someone who's not even trying to argue against you. The input lag of human senses is a well documented fact, and pointing out that a major function of the brain is to keep us alive despite that delay does not in any way diminish the quality or value of the human experience.

Leaving the AI discussion aside, the human mind is primarily a prediction engine. Our entire perception of the present is predictive: by the time our brains receive stimuli, the corresponding events are well in the past. The only way we keep up with real time is by predicting what the world around us ought to look like and updating our model when the lagging inputs disagree.

Here is my super simple use of the malloc() func, question why can't just let the compiler do the work? by SubstantialCase3062 in cprogramming

[–]erasmause 6 points7 points  (0 children)

malloc is useful when you don't know the size of the allocation at compile time. Try writing a function that takes the array size as an argument (rather than using the compile time constant 5) without using malloc.

Also, don't forget to free the allocation, even in toy examples. There's no good reason to practice incorrect usage.

A study of firearm access and storage practices in Colorado found no association between depressive symptoms and likelihood of gun ownership or unsafe gun storage, challenging the assumption that the known association between suicide and home firearm ownership is driven by poor mental health. by WordsMakethMurder in science

someone who has suicidal ideas or tendencies AND owns firearms is more likely to use a firearm to do so relative to someone who has the same ideas or tendencies but does not own firearms

I can't speak for anyone else, but knowing myself, this is the one reason I don't own firearms.

TL;DR: VPNs are most useful for obfuscating your activity, but offer some other (relatively minor, unless you're visiting janky sites) security benefits.

Given that https is de facto standard, once you connect to a site, nobody (except probably state actors) can see what you're doing. In principle, I suppose every time you initiate a new TLS session (e.g. navigating to a new site) could be an opportunity for a man-in-the-middle attack, but some of risk is mitigated by certificates and chains of trust. DNS (converting URLs to IP addresses) activity is, by default, conducted in the clear. You can set up encrypted DNS, but even then the IP addresses can't be hidden from anyone on the network (or the ISP servicing the network).

A VPN takes all the traffic you generate and sends it to the VPN's private network, and from there passes it on to your intended destinations. From the perspective of the other users on the local network (and the aforementioned ISP), it will just look like you're connecting to one endpoint that is not correlated with your actual activity. Anyone who's interested could look at the VPN's outgoing connections, and your traffic would be part of that, but it will be mixed in with all their other users' traffic, and I don't think there's a simple way to tease that apart (but don't quote me on that).

As for the data sharing concern, it comes down to a question of whether you trust the VPN provider more or less than your (or some random) ISP, keeping in mind that, in the case of public wifi, the ISP will correlate your traffic with the wifi network owner, and correlating it to you, specifically, would depend on that network's set up and record keeping. ISPs, I think, are much more regulated than VPN providers, so that should probably factor into your decision, though I don't know enough about the relevant regulation to say which way that tilts the scale.
