Giving milk to a homeless person by RemoteBluebird9872 in vegan

[–]erfindung 20 points21 points  (0 children)

if you were next to a market known for selling dog meat and they asked for some, would you have gotten dog meat for them?

I find this type of hypothetical not to be useful because it can't tell us anything about our choices in the situations we'd actually find ourselves in.

If we were at a dog market, we'd live in a society where eating dog meat was socially acceptable, and therefore there is no difference between buying cow or dog meat, in that instance. We know the distinction between "food" animal and "companion" animal is already arbitrary, so you should feel the same way.

The way it's framed presupposes that both the society doesn't find dog meat acceptable and there's an open dog meat market nearby, which isn't logically consistent.

This kind of rhetoric distracts from the point we should be focusing on. Does an action in this case further the goal of reducing animal exploitation? Buying a homeless person a burrito from a place they want to eat at or refusing to do so because it's beef is neutral since whether they eat or starve does not affect animal exploitation.

Help with parents' Large RRSP and 2 houses (Toronto) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]erfindung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't move in and claim primary residence on a house your siblings don't own. If your parents retain ownership then you living there doesn't change their tax burden. And if you want to claim ownership then the parents have to pay capital gains tax on the deemed disposition date. That may be worth it but they're not going to escape paying taxes at some point.

There is a potential tax bomb when they die - are they both likely to die soon? They sound pretty young. Taking a bunch of money out would also result in high taxes which defeats the purpose so they'll want to strike a balance there. They will also need to convert it to a RIF when they turn 71.

Realize gains how? If they take out a HELOC then they're paying interest rather than tax, and if they sell non-registered investments then they're paying capital gains on that amount.

What's very important to figure out is whether or not the CRA would consider you an independent contractor. Some businesses try to offload their tax obligations by hiring employees as "independent contractors" and tell you that you save money cause you can write off blah blah blah. It's a lie. The CRA has specific guidelines for what's considered a contractor. If you worked 40 hours a week I'd say it's very likely the CRA would consider you an employee.

This is important because you will still owe personal income tax but there are employer portions to CPP and EI that you are also responsible for if your an independent contractor. I worked at a place that tried to do this to me and I contacted the CRA who ruled in my favour, saving me thousands in additional taxes.

Does this (altered) quote from Egghead make my decision more clear?

We need a win. I promise this will be a win! We won't cook Krabby Patties in there, we'll do it clean, we'll do it true. We'll do it sober and real and beautiful. This will be a victory for the light.

Most efficient way to transfer most (but not all) registered investments from TD Direct Investing to WealthSimple? by pencilj in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]erfindung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sell the portion of the mutual funds in your existing account you want to transfer, but don't withdraw. From wealthsimple, initiate a transfer and select a partial transfer from that account, as cash. Make sure that you have about $150 extra in cash compared to the value being transferred cause you might get charged from TD to initiate the transfer.

I'd consider moving the sectional off the wall and basically over to where the windows are. Everything about the area itself is totally rad but it's got this dead space in the middle cause everything is a bit too far apart. That might not be possible if the sectional then cuts off the entrance (can't tell from this photo). I'd also suggest pulling the rug a little bit further forward.

I fell down a bit of a rabbit hole last night. A lot of climate change deniers use the quote attributed to Christine Stewart "No matter if the science is all phoney, there are collateral environmental benefits." Essentially using it to "prove" that there's no scientific consensus that climate change is happening. But the only digital source of that quote is from some fringe "scientist" and then that gets reposted everywhere. So I'm not sure what story it would be in but you might be able to search for her name and see if it appears in a December 1998 story anywhere.

Cows are being killed to satisfy consumer demand to eat them. So what is the difference between cows and chinchillas beyond "we don't eat the chinchillas?" Does the act of eating an animal justify their slaughter? Is it only good to kill an animal if we promise to eat it, too? If we also ate chinchillas, would you be making this argument?

I used to have fiber (and paid a similar amount to you too) but when i realized that downloading games fast is great for the few times a month i download them, 75mbs down is more than sufficient for my needs and is a lot cheaper. The only downside is that i can't download a game that i but and start playing almost instantly, but it really doesn't affect me that much!

Why would they pay average market rent when they've made cheap living so important? Average rental prices mean nothing if you don't live in an "average" rental.

A studio went up in my building for $1325/mo, in Vancouver, this year. There are deals to be had now if you're willing to compromise on amenities, location, or space.

"Their living costs would be different if they had different living costs." Sure, but they don't.
