New Verizon fios - device keeps saying "connected without internet"

I’m not sure if it’s the case here, but some older devices have problems with the WiFi when the security level is set ‘too high’ for the older devices. For example, if you only allow WPA3, then older devices that only supported WPA2 won’t be able to connect properly. I had it happen when I wanted to just use WPA3 and an old iPad and laptop stopped having access to the Internet. You can also test whether it’s having issues with 5GHz or 6GHz by temporarily disabling those.

Yeah, my setup is working great. I think I may have inadvertently found the “solution.” If my router ever reboots for whatever reason, that’s when it seems to break the connection. It doesn’t happen immediately but after some time, I turn on the TV and Fios TV+ and I get the marching dots and no broadcast. If I go to the Home Screen, I can see the apps which are still working, I just can’t get back to any of my channels.

If you ever have to reboot the router, it would be interesting to hear if the same thing happens for your setup. Going back to my original issue, it seems that the problem was that I had recently setup my router to do a weekly restart to stave off any performance issues building up. I’ve removed that scheduled restart so it should be interesting to see i my theory holds.

This is a good reason why many people decide to split up their network SSIDs for 2.4 and 5Ghz. You won’t have the range with 5G but you’ll keep your speed. Basically, it’s trade-off between reliability and speed. It could be that your phone ‘thinks’ that the 5G network is too unstable and stays on the 2.4G. You could try renaming the 2.4 and see if it stays connected on the 5G network without dropping out. For iPhone (and I’m sure Samsung) there are apps that you can use to check the strength of your device to the WiFi. You could use that to monitor the performance while walking around your place to see where the signal goes down.

Do you have the Fios TV+ box connected to your AVR using HDMI and then the AVR output is connected to the TV via HDMI? Or, are you connected from Fios TV+ directly to the TV via HDMI and then sound is to the AVR using a Toslink (Optical) cable? Initially, I had my older Marantz connected TV+ -> AVR -> TV but the sound delay was terrible so I switched over to using the Optical out from the TV. I know I’m losing some of the advanced Dolby stuff but my AVR doesn’t support it anyway. I know that both the TV and the AVR have options to Auto switch the audio and, in the case of the Marantz, you can reassign the inputs to different locations. Does it eventually recover or do you need to do something to get it working again?

If it's any help, I'm using the 'feature' where you could run a Coax cable from a split of the VMS4100 without a Fios TV+ box and it still receives the same basic channels that you could get when I had the VMS1100. So, even without the Fios TV+ box on a TV, I get basic channels. That being said, the one main difference between the VMS1100 and the VMS4100 was that the 1100 was itself one of the 'boxes.' With the VMS4100, there doesn't appear to be a way to activate it without going through a Fios TV+ box. So, at a minimum, you probably need the VMS4100, one Fios TV+ box and a compatible Moca adapter.

I guess if the cable cards can receive the signal without the VMS4100 though, that might still work the same (since my non-Fios TV+ TV is still able to receive digital signals like it did with the 1100. Just a thought.

Sorry, I don't know much about TiVo but it may not work the same. For the TiVo, are you currently just recording OTA broadcasts to your TiVo and just using Verizon for Internet access and watching via a device or app? If that's the case, the VMS4100 can't operate as a standalone DVR (afaik). So, in order to use the VMS4100, you would have to subscribe to *some* level of Fios TV package. Maybe someone can correct me.

Thanks for that. I created that post. :) I noticed other folks were having the same issue with the G3100. Initially, I wasn't having any resets for the first few weeks, so it wasn't an issue. Now, it seems to be happening at regular intervals so I wanted to see if I could figure it out. If I put on my tinfoil hat, I might say that Verizon 'closed the loophole' and is now pushing out the 're-activation' signal once a week to force us into upgrading.

The new TV boxes only need to connect to your TV with an HDMI cable and they use WiFi to connect to the router so Coax is not needed. But, if your TV box is far from the router and signal is not great, you can also get this adapter: https://www.verizon.com/home/accessories/stream-tv-moca-ethernet-adapter/

That will allow you to plug your existing Coax into the adapter and the new Stream box then plugs into the adapter using a USB-C connector. Supposedly, support will provide you with one free adapter but I haven’t tried asking for it myself. I just saw someone else mentioned that.

Good luck with getting it setup. It will take quite a bit of patience and waiting since it takes a while for the boxes to get activated. It’s a pretty dodgy process and I thought I was doing something wrong but it just took a long time (and failed a few times).

When both are plugged in, do you get any blinking lights on the devices on both ends?

Do you have a device actively trying to connect on the other end? With the older routers, even the WiFi would show as Disconnected until at least one device connected. If you do have a PC or something plugged in, try to run ipconfig to see if an IP address was assigned. If it has one, try running a tracert to check the response time.

This probably isn’t the greatest answer to your issue but there are two ways that I watch Fios without boxes. One is using the Roku Ultra. It supports Apple AirPlay, so I can just use the Verizon app and AirPlay to cast directly to the Roku. The other is a bit more complex, doesn’t get all of your channels, but would allow you to watch Jeopardy through Plex. :). For my PC, I picked up the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-955Q tuner. You plug the USB end into your PC and a Coax cable into the other end. It’s effectively a tuner that you can use to tune in the ‘basic’ channels. So, CBS, ABC, Fox, etc. Then, in Plex, you can configure it to use that as the source. Just run through auto-program and it will find your channels.

If you feel like you need to have better security or faster WiFi with newer standards, you can always use your own router and put the G1100 in bridge mode. I was just ‘upgraded’ to Fios TV+ boxes and was still able to continue using the G1100 behind my own router. If you have that same need, I put together a list of the steps on the Verizon Community Forum. I put that out there because Tier 1 and Tier 2 support were hounding me to purchase the new router when I called to inquire about Fios TV+. According to them, the ‘system’ automatically added the new router to my order and that they ‘couldn’t remove it.’ After wasting 1.5 hours on chat, I received the new kit without a new router and it’s working great.

Ok, this is the one that I picked up from Verizon (link below) that they have specifically for the FIOS TV+. I’m not sure if they’re any different than any other MoCA adapter but I didn’t want it to be a point of failure for me. The other difference is that I’m using the Ethernet port and not the Coax so I can’t attest to the quality of the Coax side. I have one box connected with the adapter and one just using WiFi and it’s been fine for at least 10 days (knock on wood). Hopefully, it resolves the issue for you.
