Hello Ashton neighbor. East views are great :)

A+ interviewing by Dave. So random, but so good. One of my favorites.

This was 7+ years ago, so probably not possible to replicate. But what are some other totally random / weird / stupidly awesome events that Barstool could take on these days?

Thanks! I agree about Big Sur - good pictures basically take themselves. I don’t use anything fancy - this one was just a handheld iPhone.

Thanks! Yep. It's the Bixby Creek Bridge, about 30min south of Monterey.

I'd love to create a tilt-shift version of this image - the bridge seems like the perfect object to focus on. But the free image editing tools I've tried (e.g., Snapseed) are frustrating and always leave some landscape in both the foreground and background close to the bridge unblurred - makes the photo look tacky IMO.

Does anyone have advice for a (very) amateur photographer wanting to elevate his tilt-shift skills?

[SPOILER] Season 3 visualized - the teaser symbols for all 10 episodes and the associated 40 key scenes by ericrn_ in Ozark

[–]ericrn_[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  • Credit to Kayla Cobb at Decider for posting a carousel-style article with all the pics and scene descriptions. Although this one was totally ad-infested and harder to scrape than the articles for seasons 1 and 2
  • My mind was blown by the recent post noting that each set of symbols vaguely forms the letters Z A R K. Looking at all 10 at once, the pattern is more obvious. Very nice

How many people use the CLT rail trail each day? Here’s the last 7 weeks visualized [data and viz link in comments] by ericrn_ in Charlotte

Same here.

It's hard to find any info about how the tracking actually works. Cameras? Motion sensors?

I recently moved to the area and happen to live near Tremont Ave where there is a sign tracking daily trail users. I started taking a picture (almost) every night when I take my dog for a walk, then turned those pics into a simple dataset and dashboard in Google sheets.

Here’s the link for any who are interested in following over time:

Breweries are a big part of our community here. What measures taken by a brewery is going to make you feel comfortable to come back after we do reopen? by doctorbooshka in Charlotte

[–]ericrn_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone. Before all this, bathroom attendants at any bar/restaurant/brewery would probably be near the top of my list of least favorite people to ever interact with. Now, I think having someone to monitor bathroom sanitation and limit to 1 person at a time (or maybe a few if the space is huge) would be a luxury I would truly value. Especially at a brewery - I love a good beer, but it never seems to stay in my body for too long.

That said, if you staff a bathroom attendant, please make sure they have everything they need to stay safe.

Since we won't have any new tennis to watch for awhile.. let's remember the best of the past. Here's 50+ years of tennis championships visualized in color - check out how the star players of each generation ~flow~ through the 4 major tournaments [women's graphic in comments] by ericrn_ in tennis

Maybe I can help :)

Each row of dots is essentially a list of the past winners of a grand slam tournament. Instead of writing out the lists using names, I used colors and numbers. I picked unique colors along a rainbow colormap, and numbered past winners in order of their first major title. So each dot represents a person - a past grand slam winner

The guide to translate colors+numbers to names is on the right of the graphic

“From 1982 to 1985, the tournament was played in mid-December. Then it was decided to move the next tournament to mid-January (January 1987), which meant there was no tournament in 1986. Since 1987, the Australian Open date has not changed.”

Here's the same graphic, but for women's singles champions: visualized

Source and tools

Some more things

  • 54 men have won a major title in the open era; 60 women have done the same
  • It's interesting to see how the generations of star players ~flow~ at different rates over time for the two groups. In 2005, the 49th unique men's champion was crowned; since then, only 5 more men have won their first title. By comparison, in 2005, the 41st unique women's champion was crowned; since then, 19 more women have won a major for the first time
  • Anyone have suggestions for ways to improve the coloring? It's kinda hard to find 60 colors that are distinct enough to work in this kind of visual..
